So I scanned in some nice sideart for my star trek 25th and i'm in the process of cleaning it up and getting as many flaws out as I can. The next phase will to find somewhere that can print large format vinyl big enough to cover and entire pinside--cheaply. Anyone have some ideas? |

Went over to b1's house, drank his beer and used a desktop scanner on its side to make a series of scans, then used photoshop to stitch them together. Still have some cleanup to do but it turned out great so far. |

They do side art for vids so they definately can do side art for a pin. And they do custom work so you should be able to get something done. |

If anyone had an idea of the preferred materials (type of substrate and adhesive) it certainly wouldn't be difficult to call around to the various (and copious) LFI printers out there who do vehicle graphics and signs to get a quote. Find one who loves pinball and you might just get a deal. I'd be interested in re-doing some of mine, but only at leass than US$250 a crack. |

well scratch mamemarquees.com--he says he stays away from original material--although it begs the question what sideart is he actually printing--do enough people make original sideart for pins that he has set up pricing for it ??? I know this stuff is all copyrighted but its not like data east exists as a corporate identity anymore. AND its not like i'm making my own pin with copyrighted material--its for restoration only?? Doesn't make sense to me but ah well the search continues...Any ideas? |

Visit your local sign shops. The ones that can print large signs, and vehicle graphics as already mentioned. That's what I did for my latest project. They print them on a white vinyl base, up to about 8 feet wide I think. I provided the artwork to them in either high res jpeg, or straight bitmap, or even tif. Of course it has to be exactly to scale. I think I paid around $300 for two complete sets of cabinet decals, (both sides, cabinet front, and backbox sides as well as two translights). The translights didn't come out all that well, as they didn't have any acetate material on hand, and just printed them on the same white vinyl. My intention is to fix the translights to a couple of sheets of clear acetate, to give them the proper stiffness of a regular translight.
The cab decals are self adhesive, and were a breeze to install. You can check them out in the "projects" section under the tread "New for 2008". Good luck!

Out of curiosity, what DPI did you scan it at? Is it in RGB or CMYK? A lot of printers may ask for CMYK. Which format is this in, TIFF?
Gameroom magazine has a recent series all about art reproduction and the things you should be aware of. You might want to test a sample, before committing to a large project, just in case the end result is less than expected. |
