I was just wandering your opinions. Which would you buy, the new IJ or a TZ.  I have never played TZ but hear so much about how fun they are .  Thanks for your thoughts.

You really should ask YOURSELF what you're looking for..

If your looking for something that'll hold it's resale value - TZ.  However, keep in mind that TZ is a complex game and it does take a while to "get it".  Not a machine for the casual player or non-pin person.  If you're a good player and are looking for a challenge this may be for you

IJ - big toys (ark), most likely very easy to understand the basics (get the balls in the ark, etc), new pin smell
Although probably not yet with the software, it'll most likely have a deeper ruleset than TZ (like LOTR and TSPP).

I had TZ for over a year and I'm the only person that played it.  Everybody else played my other games because they just couldn't figure out what to do in TZ because of the complex and "unintuitive" ruleset.  A lot of new Sterns have that "wow" look and have something easy to shoot for (ship in POTC, Ark in IJ, car in Nascar, etc), you don't have to read a book to figure out what to do....  However, because of the simplistic goals, overall gameplay sometimes sucks.

Stern IJ is unknown.  It could be another Soprano's or it could be another Simpsons.

I vote TZ (or wait)

Mike is right, and this is why i will vote for TZ

Nobody but me and my father-in-law plays my games, and he also likes a challenge (he's playing TZ a lot).

Would also depend on your finances, lots of TZ's availables right now for about 3700$ while the new Stern will be somethign like 4200$ + taxes and will QUICKLY lose value IF ITS NOT UP TO EXPECTATIONS.

But, as usual, i recommend playing them both before the purchase, nothing sucks more than paying 5k for a game to realize that you like the cheaper ones more... been there, done that in some situations.

Technology is starting to catch up with the old williams machines-
The new sterns have deeper software are easier to program for the designer and easier to update for the end user, and they have resolved the weak flipper issues with the new operating system and the 40v coils.

Exactly what I was thinking. The playfield on IJ looks rather bland in terms of shots. It's way too early to make a judgement call. If you have to buy now, TZ.

I've gotta say, comparing my experience with my old IJ to my experience with the new TSPP I would say wait, play the new IJ and go for that one.

Let's face it, IJ is not going to be a flop.  As many have said on here before the value of a game is also in its theme.  There is just nothing more exciting than Indiana Jones.  With 16 modes based on all 4 movies - that alone will make it great.  8 ball mutiball as well looks enticing.  And how about those toys!!  Way cooler than "the clock"

As well, if you pre-order now you can save a few hundred $$ from most retailers.  Best I have found in the USA is $4000 + shipping + duty.  In Canada I have found $4995 + gst.  You should get at least a 1 or 2 year warranty in the new prices which you will never get on an old TZ.  Save the headaches, buy a new IJ and be the first!!

WTF? How can anyone say TZ over IJ4? IJ4 isn't out yet!!! Unless someone has played both, don't listen to them.

It would be fair to say something like: "TZ is really awesome, and no game since has been better, therefore IJ4 'probably' won't be"

I would definitely wait for it to come out. See if it is in fact a decent game, since Stern has been able to screw up some fantastic licenses. Wait for someone else to take the hit on the devaluation and then buy it.

Once all that is said and done, you will have probably bought, enjoyed and sold that TZ they are suggesting and be no lighter in the pocket to do it.

TZ isn't for everyone. Larry DeMar himself said they were never satisfied with the balance of the rules to have the game appeal to the casual gamer. I have other games that guests can "chimp" the flippers on.

and can afford to lose over $1,000 if it turns out to be turd. I'm on the fence w/ the new IJ. Looking at Spiderman and Family Guy, I knew I would enjoy them. Not convinced w/ IJ4.

I agree w/ Necro's assessment. You can buy and enjoy a TZ today. If IJ4 turns out to be the next holy grail (reference to movie intentional of pinball then you can easily sell TZ and buy the IJ.

Hmmm - you all make selling a pinball sound like selling a DVD or a blanket grandma knitted.  Seriously is it that easy to sell a pin - an old pin??  I doubt it.  Look at the classified listings on this site alone and see how many people are selling and waiting and waiting and waiting.  Not sure about the term "easliy sell" and "be no lighter in the pocket".  If you screw up like I did, your $3500 machine could need $1500 of work to still be a $3500 machine

This thread is stupid, you guys are all saying tz over a game that none of you have played. TZ over LOTR? Now thats a tough one. Reserve your thoughts and wait for IJ to come out and lets revive this thread, not a single one of you know if this is the next LOTR/TSPP or not.

Having heard Mark's comments, let me add my two cents.

15 year old pins are for people that can repair their own pins, and TZ has many toys that need regular attention. It took me many months to get my first TZ to work 100%. That is why operators hated TZ, it always needed attention or something repaired. I have no idea if Stern's IJ will be a great pin, but I think a new pin is better choice for you, unless you want to send many $$$ keeping it running.

It has been scientifically proven that light is faster than sound. That is why some people seem brilliant........until they open their mouth!

HEY, HE HASN'T PLAYED TZ EITHER !! SO "Wait for IJ"  doesn't apply !

Look at HP5P's list of games ...and tell me where the LOTR is ? or the simpsons?

I've been waiting and checking for LOTR and everyone tells me the same thing: they are not built like williams... THEY BREAK *MORE OFTEN* then williams !! the choice is TEASY.

Here we go with the build issue. None issue in a home environment. My LOTR has given me less headaches than my TZ (which has also been very good). No issues w/ LOTR to date. TZ has had a few, but I've owned it for 10 years.

No it's not that is an easy one, LOTR all day and twice on Sunday

I've had one problem with my LOTR in the 2 years I've owned it and that is with frequent TOPL events at my house.  The one problem was the Balrog switch, opened up the Balrog adjusted the switch, haven't had a problem since.
