I'm trying to track down the exact cause of the error but its hard to debug since its not always down !!

Basically there is a timeout somewhere in a Perl script.. or a ressource goes too high on the webserver. Trying to get the Apache error log as we speak.

Moving to the SQL e-blah wont fix the issue imo, i tried to run it while the server was down and it didnt work either (code is still Perl and i think we should move to a PHP based script).

Actually the real question is: how should be archive the old posts. There are several possibilities, i could make everything accessible from a browseable/searchable page and then we start fresh on the new script.. If you all wants to stay on e-Blah and keep everythign as it is, then we need to upgrade/fix the hosting server or move somewhere else. Its only a ressource issue imo...

EDIT: also you should all start to archive the pm's you want to keep somewhere, because that's going to be an issue as well if we move on.

More than once I've found that after doing a 'Search', it hangs, and then error 500. This is not the first time I've mentioned this. Don't believe me? Do a search!

I have offered a lower load server just as soon as I get out from under some other "business" I had the software all installed and was just trying to migrate the database as a test, but then had to put it aside for the moment.  Sylvain is working on option.

The fact of the matter is, that despite how much we like MAACA as it is now, the E-blah forum is mostly "abandoned-ware" and we should be moving to a more "alive" implementation like PHPBBS (IMHO).

The only thing that should be kept is the tutorial section, IMO.. the rest is just French nonsense

and who cares about post counts?

Start fresh, save this old forum in a "MAACA Classic" section if you want to archive the whole thing.

I'd be willing to bet most of us don't look past the Portal anyway.

Don't forget the classifieds. Some people have WTB or FS ads up there that go back more than a year. It'd suck if they just vanished.

Are there many searches a day? at the same time? I have seen other sites that have a 20 second search rule. once a search is done you can only do another one 20 seconds later.

I just did this - very easy actually.   Within private messages just say "Print PM" - then you get a link to print all the PMs in your inbox/sent.   I then just printed them to a PDF document - its great now.   All the PM's are searchable!

PHPBB is the way to go.  I've set one up, and it's a breeze.

Set a date, tell people to archive what they want, and start fresh.  Everyone can re-register, and start fresh.

I think everyone agrees, eblah has it's good points and it's very straight forward and simple.  It's a shame to lose it.  But sometimes you just gotta move on and let the chips fall where they will.

Now one thing we could do is host both, but turn off all posting and sign-ups on the old MAACA - so it's just a reference archive - for Google. I wonder if that will work - disable PM and emailing from the old e-blah and just point everyone to continue in the new forum.  Bet you wouldn't notice a difference after 6 months or so.  same old crowd. same jokes, same compaints. and those damned Hollywood Heats and Hyperballs going back and forth...

Are you running the SQL version? Should you be?

The platform was stable for the longest time. Are you sure it isn't a compatibility issue with something else they upgraded on the server?

The forum is a pretty powerful tool which allows you to use embedded code. It would be a shame to lose a lot of it's functionality. The interface is pretty easy to use.

Totally not necessary... like I've said before, I have no problem hosting for free, no strings attached.  I do the same for CGCC.

I don't understand all the rigamarol about the server... I have offered a good one for free.... the only problem is set-up time/manpower at the moment.  For gods sake how am I supposed to do it when I have to answer all these MAACA posts.....

In any case, I've been enjoyiong the 500 errors.  got me back my life, I can actually take pee breaks and talk to my family instead of waiting to try to beat Gory to the post for a free Firepower.... or that mythical $2000 GNR ... or that damned Silver Slugger that got scooped right from under my nose...

Spoiler: Thankfully, they miss Canada.

I do remember growing up in Vancouver where we were all given a map to the air raid shelters, and practiced in school for "bomb drills" - their answer at the time - "Hide under your desk."  I also remember praying at night that if THEY did drop the bomb, I would be at episcentre so that I wouldn't have to live through what the Japanese in Hiroshima, and Nagasaki lived through.

re: BC safety.  After 45 years of eating BC salmon, you think I am worried about a little plutonium?  Come on!

No we are not... BUT, we have a Beta SQL version installed for testing.

From their own website: There is an SQL beta version available. It is not by any means complete or in fully working status. You should check out the thread about it on the E-Blah Community before using it.

Give me a few days to troubleshoot the current issues, i just started looking into it last weekend.

That's too weird.  When I was copying the files to test on our server I thought it was the flat file system, then I suggested trying the Beta SQL and was told that you were already using it.  No worries.

I strongly suggest we do what I am proposing.  Set up a new forum in PHPBBS and freeze the original E-Blah MAACA for posterity.

Sylvain, let em know if you make any progress.  I'd be happy to give you the coordinates / access to our server that has been set up for MAACA for quite some time now.

No mess... I am getting a nosebleed reading all the details. And I thought SQL was cool chat slang for an education establishment.

Oh well...

Retiring soon...
