Hey What about Future pinball? I was trying to find projects where ppl made their own pins with futurepinball? it looks much better than pinmame
see, you got confused with the whole "mame" thing
pinmame EMULATES THE BOARDS and displays. nothing to do with "the playfield". originally release as "wpcmame" ( man was I happy to be able to run the funhouse roms and hear the sounds! ( that's in 2001) )
visual pinball simulates a playfield
vpinmame is a com object that allows you to plugs them together and actually play real tables.
Futurepinball is a new " from scratch " (yeah right) editor from the only other guy who worked on visual pinball with, agreed, better looks then visual pinball BUT IT WILL NEVER RUN VPINMAME.
So you've got old Ems or "original" tables on future pinball ... people in love with Ems will have the real games while some original are very nice, none says "build me a 4000$ cabinet"

has anyone else tried to make a table using VPINMAME? although everyone says its not the same.. I am just interested in seeing projects.
You can't, vppinmame only emulates the CPU/ video display/ and audio. You still need something to simulate the ball, playfield, and physical things. That's where visual pinball comes in. Visual Pinball + pinmame = pinball machines that you can play on your computer.
And visual pinball sucks. It's windows only (I'm on a mac), it's buggy, the graphics stink, you only have one view...
It'd be super super awesome if someone made a pinball simulator that was as good as Pinball FX on the 360, and if it used pinmame, that would be THE BEST THING EVER.

Well, I totally disagree with some of the comments. Visual pinball / vpinmame of course will never replace a real pin, certainly, but it's still a fun diversion and in certain cases, some tables look great and play extremely well.
Clarification/opinion: - You are not limited to one view in many tables. The only tables you are limited, are those that were built using decals. Any other table that are "angle dependant", knock yourself out and adjust the view as you wish. If you don't know how, ask and I'm sure many/I will help.
- The technology behind Visual Pinball is 2D, so yeah, it doesn't look as pretty compared to more modern programs. The core of this app dates back I think to 2000 and the developer has kept it up to date, but mostly via bug fixes only the past few years. However, I'll take the present VP/VPM physics and performance compared to the competition (FP), which my 2.4ghz and 128mb vid card just isn't up to snuff, at least last time I tried it. No doubt, FP has immense potential, but last I heard the dev did not want VPM integration, so I wouldn't expect a flood of DMD tables to appear anytime soon. However, I've heard it is improving so hopefully we'll have a beautiful future playing FP tables soon.
- VP is free and you can play thousands of tables if you look beyond VPM. This may be sacrilegious, but there is more to pinball than flippered tables. Some of the flipperless recreations were pretty fun if you take them in the proper context of pinball history. What they, along with the early flippered tables, lack in modes, they make up in variety of tables, beauty in design/art and are a dream come true for some of those who are fans of targets . I also recommend some try out a few of the originals. High quality originals may not be common, but there are a few outstanding tables which deserve to be played imho. Check out The Jetsons (old but still good), Monkey Island, Fight Night, Rapid Vienna and more (I'm certainly forgetting many!).
- "VP is buggy": I hear the editor is extremely buggy but personally, the player has been very stable for me and I've played a lot of tables.
- Performance in VP sucks: Yep, some tables are CPU intensive because of the emulation of all the flashers, the sounds, the DMD, etc., which in turn can cause more bugs to appear (very dependant of your CPU). However, unbeknownst to some, but known to others, you can tweak some settings for VPM tables which works out many of the kinks, at least with my 2.4 gig rig (search for "yieldtime" on VPForums for more info).
- Some say it's overly complex: Sure, it's combining two different apps, personally I think it's a miracle it works as it does!
- Doesnt work on the mac/other OS. Yep, which it was portable too. Its a MS-Windows world
- "It isn't as good as Pinball FX". Well, I'm a big fan of Pinball FX, I can't argue too much there. Great engine, etc. However, it too has its flaws, though I overlook them as it is still fun. Which are? Lack of tables, NO LOCAL MULTIPLAYER (last time I checked and if it's still like that, a serious faux pas), some bugs that killed the point of the global high score tracking, lack of event related music so the tune you hear tends to get on the nerves a little too quick. There are more mediocre stuff but still, I can't deny I've had a lot of fun with it and I personally found it was worth the $11. Of course, you're talking to a guy that thought pinball construction set in its glorious 4 colors on the apple II was a godsend! Pinball FX, like the pro-pinball series, has a huge advantage over VP: A budget and a focus on a couple of pins as opposed to the construction set purpose of VP.
I guess it depends on the target audience. If you're not into video games, I could appreciate the disdain or lack of understanding. VP/VPM is first and foremost a VIDEO interpretation of pinball, a video game, not a pinball machine. But as a video game, it's got half decent physics, a lot of tables, is free and is fun. To each is own I guess.
Final comment: First time I tried VP, I wasn't impressed but I also didn't try the right tables. I highly recommend you try any tables by JPSalas, Pacdude, Kristian, Scapino, Eala and many others I'm unfortunately forgetting (I'm at work darn it, the stress!). I was away from VP most of the past 2 years and missed some outstanding releases. Elvira and the Party Monsters, Scared Stiff, LOTR are just a few of the dynamite tables that blew me away. Check them out, its worth the experiment.
