«You know where you are? You're in Montreal.

Trust me... people that say "oh, you are overreacting... it couldn't be that bad and it happened 18 years ago" weren't there. It was a nightmare.
To sum it up more precisely, Faith No More opened up and played for 35 minutes... OK so far. No problems.
Metallica comes on, plays for less than an hour and then Hetfield burns himself BAD on some pyros. They all leave the stage.
No announcements, nothing...
TWO hours later, GNR come on stage and look pissed off (probably for lack of preparation or something, I don't know...). They play 1 complete song, and in the middle of the second song, Axl decides he has had enough, throws his mike and walks off. The other band members look at him and seem confused. Slash is the last to leave the stage after playing solo for 10 minutes.
No announcement.
The lights go on.
Thank you very much.
... and people just lose it.
I had to run away from crazy people tearing the place apart, and cops trying to beat me with their nightsticks. All becuase some a**hole didn't feel like singing that night. I paid good money to see that jackass play, and it is at the point that still to this day, I wouldn't spend 5 bucks on a GNR pin.
I only give someone the chance to screw me over once. Good or not last night, he is still a fruitcake.

Not that it makes the evening perfect, but considering the main act only put together 2 songs, there were no refunds offered or requested/granted?

Do you use the expression fruitcake as per follow:
To describe one of weak or frail characteristics that do not uphold the expectations of others; and to describe one as "off one's rocker" or as one who has "lost one's marbles".
or to describe him as:
Fruit and fruit cake (as well as many variations) are sexual slang terms which have various origins but modern usages tend to primarily refer to gay men
Because you shouldn't insult the gay people so harshly.........

A nut-job. And I am actually insulted that you would even think I would insult the gay community that way. Just proves that people are just too damn sensitive and freedom of speech is hindered.
Besides... one of my best friends is gay, and he uses terms to laugh at himself that I have never even heard of.

Actually, here... you may like this better to describe Axl:
a**hole (oops... insult to proctologists but it does sound like his name) Dickwad (oops... insult to people with premature reactions ) Dumbass (oops... insult to people with diminished intelectual capacity) Thieving bastard (oops... insult to the criminally challenged)
... ah, screw it. I just can't win.
Here you go... Axl Rose is an a**hole. Not a fan, but much of what I've read about him indicates a high level of douchbagery.
Here are the highlights of the concert. Although I love going to concerts (probably my 30th in 14 years) and I do love music, I'm very much a casual music fan. I can't remember song names, group members or any heavy group details. Concerts for me are always an introductury point to a group. My brother in law who I attend these with, he's the real deal Rock fan, so I rely on his for what is good to see.
- Got at Scotiabank place at 7:15, they had the most severe security check (for cameras) I’ve ever seen. Took us about 1 hour to get through the door (concert was to start at 8pm) - Backup band started at 8:00pm, we kind of listened to them from the hall (no offence but from what I was hearing, good enough for us). - Afterwards, got to the seats, they were awesome; first section from the stage (on the side); 15 rows up. - Next up was Sebastian Bach. Damn he was good and so was the Skid Row stuff he played. Nice flashback to the past. Tu avais raison David, that 19 year old guitarist knows what he's doing! - He finished around 9:30-9:40pm I believe - Finally Guns and Roses came on at… 11:11pm! Holy crap! A 90 minute wait!
So that sounds disappointing but in reality, it was not. I was warned by my brother-in-law and others at work that it could be a long wait so we chatted, I took a walk, etc. Then after that long wait, Axl and his troup played from 11:11pm... until 2:05pm, a nearly 3 hour set with a minimal encore pause. Great stage, lots of variety (piano solo from bandmate and his own contribution was great, Bubbles in his spacesuit was pretty funny, some interaction with the crowd). His voice at times certainly is starting to show its age, but he still knock some of the tunes out of the park and the energy was there. Also from my limited concert experience, you certainly do not get a studio voice from most act; I can attest the same from AC/DC, KISS, The Guess Who, Billy Idol, Def Leoppard, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Ozzie, heck even Clapton. Just comes with the territory from getting old I guess .
I have to admit, the show surpassed my expectations; two huge thumbs up. So Axl Rose is a nutcase, but he sure freakin' knows how to entertain and if he ever comes back again, may take in another visit.
... I'll just ensure I book off the next day in advance, as opposed to doing so at 3:30am (time I got home!)!
Thanks for the write up, Loafer. I definitely considered going, but didn't . The new CD is incredible and is a natural progression from Use Your Illusion I & II. Some of the tracks are just incredible and classic. If it was any other band, it would be getting play on the radio non-stop, but I think the hype took the steam out of the release.
I agree w/ you re: Bach. Amazing singer and he's Canadian. A Scarborough boy I believe. I saw him open for GnR back in the day at Toronto. I was 5 rows from the stage. Incredible voice.
I too went to the concert last night. But unlike Loafer, I sat in the nose bleeds in the 300s. Also, unlike Loafer, I didn't have to wait to get in at all! I arrived at the same time but got a quick 2 second pat down and was let in.
Despite the seats, the show still rocked. Yes, it was a long wait for Axl to come on stage but that was to be expected and the show was worth it. They played a good number of the newer songs that to me are rather forgettable but they also played a ton of their old stuff. When they started playing "You Could Be Mine" the crowd freaked out, it was awesome. I really wish I was old enough to see GNR when they were in their prime (but not in Montreal) with Slash. I don't know who these other guys strumming on the stage were but they played really well. They stayed true to Slash's original riffs. It was like seeing the world's best GNR cover band with Axl Rose guest singing.
And in defence of the opening band, Danko Jones, I like them! I have a few of their songs on my iphone. Yes, most of their songs consist of a single chord over and over but it still rocks. Even the singer admitted to that while on stage.

happy to hear you enjoyed your show...may i ask what do you think about DJ ASHBA the main guitarist of the new GNR? for me, he s not slash but i found him FANTASTIC...lot of charism et plein de qualités que je connais pas les mots en anglais!!!!

DJ ASHBA? Wasn't sure of his name but he played very well. IMHO, not sure why he wears a crunched version of Slash's hat though, seemed a bit in poor taste but I assume that's an inside joke on Axl's part.
Concerning Bach and that wiz kid 19 year old guitarist: Before he introduced him, I would have sworn they were related (father/son?) as I thought there was quite a resemblance. But it was never acknowledged so doesn't look like it.
They played a good number of the newer songs that to me are rather forgettable but they also played a ton of their old stuff.
Sorry to take to hi-jack the thread somewhat, but how can you not like the new songs? So many of the songs just rock.
Try giving it a few listens.
The disc opens strong with the first three tracks being absolutely incredible: Chinese Democracy (killer opening riff), Shackler's Revenge, and Better. IRS and Madagascar are great tracks as well. This I Love is a classic "this one is for the ladies" track. Etc. Best of all I can listen to the album with my wife without being embarrassed by the misogyny prevalent in Appetite. If he could stop dropping the occasional F bomb, I could listen to it with the kids in the room -- oh well that's what Kiss is for.
Shackler's Revenge is the only memorable song on there. The album isn't bad, it's just forgettable. I've hear it a few times, but I still couldn't recall the songs when they played them on stage, with the exception of Shackler's.

I saw them back in '02, while they weren't bad I find it ridiculous that they call any reincarnation of the last decade Guns and Roses. As far as the new album I find it is just plain bad. This album received no airplay because it stinks not because the radio industry is trying to black ball them.
The opening track (I believe) received tons of airplay around here for a short period of time but fizzled out because of lack of popularity. I can't think of a single person who said they like any of the new stuff, and most people I know were big fans back in the day.

The problem is most folks are "fans in the day" and want it to sound exactly like GnR did. People evolve. 20+ years have come and gone since the initial CD. The disc is outstanding in my opinion. I think it is as good as Use Your Illusion I & II. I found a few tracks on UYI I & II to be filler. On Chinese Democracy, I think every track is valid. Just my opinion and this from someone who remembers first listening to them before they got airplay. My buddy had the CD before I heard one track on radio. Then BAM! They were huge.

DJ Ashba's one of the most talented guitarists I've seen (having been able to sit and jam with him a couple of times) He's been wearing that same exact hat for years (since the days of beautiful creatures) so I can assure you it wasn't in bad taste.
He's really pushed back with how he can play for GNR as axl has a tight leash on all of his band, but I definately suggest listening to some beautiful creatures and sixx am.
I think it would have been better received if they had used a different name for the band. I know a lot of bands maintain the original name even after significant line-up changes but for my money this isn't Guns and Roses.
In my opinion Velvet Revolver should have used the name Guns and Roses (I know legally Axl owns the name). Then again I prefer Scott Weiland to Axl any day.
And I agree, while I liked the two UYI albums, they could have put all the good tunes on one album and tossed all the filler.

Like it or lump it, the lead singer is basically the band in most cases. Skid Row isn't the saw without Bach and GnR without Axl is well...Velvet Revolver. Personally, I don't have an issue with the name. I think Chinese Democracy is a very natural evolution from UYI, so makes sense to keep the name. I really enjoy VR, again just wish they would stop using the F bomb to make a point which is often, but otherwise a great band.
Now KISS in make up without Criss and Frehley is a tribute band, but that's another thread
NIRVANA for the win!! Would have made an amazing pin theme. Could have played "Drain You" for all the outlanes, "Smells Like MULTIBALL Spirit", or "Something In The Way" drop targets.

"Like it or lump it, the lead singer is basically the band in most cases."
I can't think of another single example where the lead singer leaves a band and continues to use the band name, while the rest of the band remains unchanged with a new vocalist and uses a different name.
"I think Chinese Democracy is a very natural evolution from UYI"
I find it hard to see any natural evolution between two albums that were released almost 20 years apart. Especially with all the line-up changes in the new version on GNR. Just for kicks I looked up the bands timeline for members, it's up to 22 members now.
But you said you enjoy the album and that's all that matters. Music is a lot like pinball, what one person considers junk another enjoys and vice versa.
