I wouldn't mind trying a HVLP in restoring a cabinet.

Any recommendations on a HVLP kit?   I'd prefer something a like higher end than the princess auto, but something not necessarily pro-grade?

Before considering using a paint gun, check if you have space to do so, and a ventilation system. You can always spray outside, but I never do... I don't like bugs in my paint.

Save yourself the money and trouble and use a foam roller and brush. Or even spraycan paint. Unless you practice a lot, I wouldn't recommend using an HVLP.

Retiring soon...

get the pincess auto model for for $29 bucks!! for home use its great
does a great job on cabs and PF if you dont get bugs in the finish .

acually a guy around here does motorcycle parts outside, usually after supper when the wind dies down and has less dust than in our paint shop!   go figure ...ZERO investment!!

Hey Magneto,

What are the CFM requirements for clearcoating a playfield with a HVLP gun? Would a 20 gallon oil free Craftsman do the job? Can I go smaller for a playfield?

I had a small 20 gal. Cambell compressor and had NO problems painting snowmobile cabs , motorcycle tanks  and fenders.
the best thing Pete is check the CFM of the air gun and get the biggest you can afford. a "5hp" 20 gal running on 110 usually pumps plenty of air at 45 psi...I think around 11 CFM and maybe 5 at 90 psi.
If you dont want to invest so much money you can always go with the old rattle can..
I sold my small one for a bigger industrial real 5hp with 80 gal tank pumping plenty of air for sandblasting (20 cfm)

I bought a set of guns a few years back from Devilbiss. It's just their Starting Line set, not too expensive, but I figure they'll work fine for clear coating a few playfields and the odd cabinet repaint. I'll look into a new compressor soon, cuz I have a High Speed pf in need of a clear coat! I figure I can build a small booth out of 2x4's and tarps, and do the spraying outside. Should minimize the bugs and dust I hope
