OK, this is an idea I think on/off about.

My post is to see if there are enough interested parties both for houses to play at and people to come. I have no problem with my house but need to have some other members step up to offer their pinball collection also.

Assuming monthly league nights between Sept to June (summer off due to other stuff to do outside) that would be 10 league nights max and could probably do with 5 houses (2 meetings each). I'm just making this up as I type, so feel free to throw suggestions out. I would assume 4 machines min and would probably have to limit to a max number of members per meeting or per league? If we only limited by meeting, then could be first "whatever #" to respond to the posted meeting date and time? or if limit to actual members like some leagues then would be always the same people and maybe more competitive.

My personal thoughts is open league night to first to respond so kind of like a mini meeting but gets everybody playing and keeps the competition friendly and less labour intensive for the host/hostess.

Anyways, let's see if this idea could fly as the last few get togethers have been fun and it's always fun to play other peoples collections.

The official MAACA meetings are great and I would still host at least one a year but it's a whole other experience to get your games ready for an open meeting vs just having 5-10 people over for a fun playing night with no promises about 100% perfect machines.

Thoughts? Offers to be a league meeting house? Interested in making a monthly league night to play?

Let's hear it guys/girls.

I'm game, my house is on offer. All my games are playable, but only one is in medvet condition See my sig for the games. T2 and Shadow would be great tournament games, TAF and LOTR have much longer ball times, but we can turn up the difficulty, open the outlanes, etc.
Also, my basement is kinda small, so I'd only be able to have ~10 people at any given time.

As for time to meet, how about the second Sunday night of the month? I suggest Sunday since most people don't have plans that night, and spouses wouldn't object too much.

If people are interested, I can look into league software for keeping stats.

Oh, and medvet, this means you'll have to play LOTR, you okay with that?

I'd be up for that...

I'd even possibly offer to host,
but anyone who's seen my games room
knows it's standing room only  (...and "snug" at that ).

I could probably fit six people at once,
but anymore than that and players would start to "bump" into each other !

Sundays is a good night  (...after 8:00pm when the kids are down... )

Steph

I would definitely be interested in participating, and could offer to host a small gathering once I get a couple more machines working.

I'm definitely in for something too.   Agree on "winter months" only - and Sunday might work as the Sunday family dinners are less often than in the past.

I don't see how it can fail, me and Hippo can just meet in my basement regularly and call it a league.

Hey guys

Just got home from work and see that people are thinking about it.

First for Jon - I actually played Duane's LOTR on the weekend and posted a decent score (for me  ) I actually like the game just makes no sense for voices or animation but as long as I shoot at the lit arrows - I'm good!

Re the night - I'll admit I'm old and don't think about partying much anymore on weekends, but Sunday being a school night and Sunday night dinner would be difficult for me. I'd prefer Friday or Sat night as it's only once a month so for you young partying guys - think pinball league party once monthly and us old parent types don't have to worry about school night bed time. . That sounds so pitiful when I read this back to myself......how life has changed having kids.

So, being the optimist that I am - I know Ottawa will get behind this idea. We have so far, my house, jonny-eh, Steph and Tuborg (I think based on your post - correct me if I'm wrong. A fifth collection would be nice but could get started with that.

Re the Friday, Sat or Sunday night - we could leave to the discresion of the host for that league night for most ease or set a standard meet night altho I think the host's choice might be easier for people to organize around their lives. Re numbers - again - leave it to the host's choice with a minimum number needed? For example - Steph can do 6 and I can do 10 etc. However, do we cancel a league night if a minimum number is not confirmed by a certain time? Opinions?

Organizing the scoring looks fairly simple due to vengeance's gracious offer and jonny-eh's offer to set it up.

Participants looks good so far at medvet, Steph, jonny-eh, loafer, tinyrodent, hippochrome, Ethous and Tuborg and I'm sure a couple of others who haven't seen the thread yet but have expressed interest before.

So guys.....let's hear any further thoughts as I'm keen to get this going as long as the interest keeps and I know there is interest in Ottawa based on previous meetings around here.

Don't forget, this thread is also to post to if you would be interested in participating as a player. Even if you can't host. offer opinions re the hosting/meeting protocols, numbers needed ie minimum as max is dictated by the house size, etc

Greatest song ever!!!!
This is truly the "Pinball Champion" song
_______________________________________________________________________
Try to be best
‘Cause you’re only a man (or woman)
And a man’s (or woman's) gotta learn to take it

Try to believe
Though the going gets rough
That you gotta hang tough to make it

History repeats itself
Try and you’ll succeed

Never doubt that you’re the one
And you can have your dreams!

You’re the best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you dow-ow-ow-ow-own

Fight ‘til the end
Cause your life will depend
On the strength that you have inside you

Ah you gotta be proud
starin’ out in the cloud
When the odds in the game defy you

Try your best to win them all
and one day time will tell
when you’re the one that’s standing there
you’ll reach the final bell!

You’re the best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you dow-ow-ow-ho-how-ho-own

INSPIRING GUITAR SOLO

You’re the best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you dow-ow-ow-ow-own

Fight ‘til you drop
never stop
can’t give up
Til you reach the top (FIGHT!)
you’re the best in town (FIGHT!)
Listen to that sound
A little bit of all you got
Can never bring you down

You’re the best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!

repeat to fade, occasional background shouts of “Oh Ye-eah!”

I'm getting second thoughts.  One little meeting, and medvet's initials are on my Hurricane - which of all the games I thought this one was "safe" - and also the one I hold dearest in terms of my score, skills, knowledge of rules and abilities.   The kids have overheard me saying "I hate girls" "I hate girls that are good at pinball" "Argh!"....

50+ games in - and I've come within 4,000,000 of the score.   Argh!    Then Duane had to add the medvet wasn't even paying attention during her game - like getting luck at the slots or something...

So if we have a party at my house, everyone's initials are DJN

We normally rack her games at her house.
She finally playing them now and not repairing as much
On another note I do know my Wife would like to Join and she is a member here.
She just never post.
I could host much later on once I have finished my bathroom in the basement.
But I could manage to setup a bunch on Henries amusements pins at the shop.
I would have to speak to him about it though but if there in the shop means I have to fix them.
Will see I know I will be able to host at one point but maybe not in first 3 months.

As you say medvet, everyone has their preference for the night of pinball mayhem. How about the host chooses the night of the week, and we rotate the host on a monthly basis? For simplicity, let's just say we meet the first weekend of each month. So if the first day of the month is a Sunday, and it's my turn to host, then we host on the first day of the month. If it's medvet's turn, then we host the next Saturday night (the first Saturday night of the month). Does that work? It'll require people to be more vigilant in planning their weekends, since it'll change every month but seems like the best solution. I can setup a web page with the schedule and scores, if you'd like.

I'll PM Adam for the TOPL rules. I think it'd be fun to make our own rules, but it may be more trouble than it's worth. My thinking would be to have a fixed number of plays per meeting, say 5 games, spread across the persons collection (dictated by the host). Then, you collect points for each game played. You get one point for every replay you meet, and another every time you get that score again. For example, if the replay is 10M, then you get one point for reaching 10M, another point for hitting 20M, then a third for hitting 30M. (Of course, the replay level will need to be fixed for everyone playing the game) Then at the end of the year, we tabulate the scores, and have a final showdown with the top two players, one game, fight to the finish, to determine the best... around. Or... for the final playoff, we have a tournament, but you can trade in your collected points to save yourself if you lose, like an extra life in a video game. That way, even if you sucked all year, you still have a chance at the final showdown, but it'll be more difficult.

Now, what should be the prize? There's gotta be pinball trophies out there somewhere.

I'm interested!  I have only 1 pin (and it's still in the garage!) so hosting is not really an option but I'm good with playing in a league.

This is what the TOPL trophies look like for Season Champ and Playoff Champion.

We are also having 2 more trophies made this year, one for Most High Scores and One for most improved player

Is the trophy given to the winner? (like a bowling trophy) or is the name just put on the one trophy (like the stanley cup)?

I'd prefer the cheap bowling trophy type.

Wow - reminds of the ESSO hockey days - didn't those awards go to the worst player??  I have a few of those      Reminds me of the movie where it pans to the boys bulletin board of medals full of "participation" "attendee" awards.

I like the Stanly Cup idea - the tradition begins now - who gets their name of the trophy first.  Imagine years later people looking at all the names and seeing yours on it.   A personal trophy will end up in the trash at least at my place (although I don't think I need to worry about this waste in the pinball trophy department).  I have no problem with awarding a personal trophy though for those that wish.

We could all chip in $5 and get a trophy done. It's all in good fun, bragging rights and the visual proof that goes with said rights .

It's like the Stanley Cup, if you win you get your initals on the trophy via a plaque, same as you would for putting your 3 initals in a machine and you get to keep and display the trophy till the end of the next season/playoffs.

The most improved is a way to help reward players that don't have a chance at winning season champ or playoffs.  It's a way to reward the people who show up and may not be great, but are still putting the effort in.

TOPL rules would probably be a good place to start. Maybe a more relaxed version for the Ottawa crowd?

OK, guys. Time to get more concrete.

Since Jon offered to organize the scoring system and Doug offered first meeting, how about Doug sets up a first meeting time that works for him and then we use that meeting to organize a bit better and plan the timings, meetings etc for the winter/spring. We can also discuss how the scoring will work and as Tinyrodent noted, maybe modify it for the Ottawa crowd if people want. My personal thought is structured but less competitive and more fun. Trophies etc are fun but let's just get the regular meetings off the ground and then worry about prizes and trophies etc. If Jon is still offering, I propose we throw that ball into his court to organize once we get some participants.

The other option, if the numbers are looking bigger for the first organizational meeting is we can have it at my house for social playing and serious organizing and then have the first official League night at Doug's to start the ball rolling.

Doug and I can talk and see what the timing is between the two of us and post back to here for numbers.

I'm up for hosting the first Ottawa Pinball League round.   A bit informal the first night - just to get a feel for everything.   The following two dates work for tinyrodent (but not medvet).   medvet said to go ahead without her this time.

Saturday January 10th
Saturday January 17th

I haven't asked the boss - and don't know my schedule - but if you can PM me on which dates you can make - I'll then make a call.   (We have to goto Kingston one weekend soon and we are not in charge of setting that date.)

What timeframe is good?   Mid-afternoon - or nighttime?    The pins are right underneath our kids beds - so maybe not the best to go too late and selfishly I usually watch Hockey Night in Canada.    Geez, I'm sounding like and old man, and I look like one, so crap, I must be one

Does 2pm - 5pm sound right?   Too short, too early?   Let me know - and I'll adjust as much as possible.   I'll try to firm the date by Wednesday to help people plan.

I checked with my own boss and it's good.  Both dates are good and also challenging:

Jan 10th: I can see it potentially being a bit short notice though for some but it's ok for me.  The afternoon timeslot is perfect IMHO.

Jan 17th:  I play texas Hold-em poker the 3rd Saturday night of every month, so if we end up moving the timeslot to a nighttime event, I'll have to pass, but if it sticks to the afternoon, it's all good.

Of both days, I guess I have a preference for this Saturday, so I don't have two outings on the same day on the 17th.

IMO - You guys need to pick a day of the month and a time (if you are going to do once a month meetings) and stick with it.  If one thing has kept TOPL running as long as it has, its the stablity.  League night will happen every Monday night of every week (except during holidays) at 8pm. Some weeks we only have 3 people there are other weeks we have 30, but it's allways on a Monday.  People are going to have scheduling conflicts, life happens, but the people who want to make it and are commitied to the league will and the casual players will make it when they can.

Trying to work around everyones schedule is going to be impossible, but if you say that every month on the 2nd Saturday at 7pm you are having a league night at such and such location, your providing stablity to league and allowing people an oppertunity to plan to attend. By playing the guessing game by going, well I might do it next weekend if I can but the weekend after might be bettr, just adds confusion.

Pick a day and time and stick with it, My 2 cents anyway.

I would like to participate in the League and am working on the Wife to host as well.  I have 6 machines and lots of space so hopefully I get the green light.  I would be out for the 10th and 17th though, but will check back regularly for any new dates.

I look forward to finally meeting some of you guys and girls...

Sticking to a specific timd/day of the month is probably darn good advice.  I don't think I could do a once a week thing though, but once a month should be ok... as long as it's not the 3rd Saturday night of each month eheh.

I like the idea of the Saturday afternoon. My wife would be annoyed if I couldn't spend a Saturday night with her. I'm good for either of the two proposed dates.

Hmm... same pattern as in MTL... trying to please everyone on a date is near impossible. I agree with Loafer here. Name a date and time. Period. You show, great. You don't, you don't.

Once a month or at most every 2 weeks is a good time span.

Having a fixed date every month is a great idea, but there's the exception where no one has a house available for a given month, but that can be worked around.

It's allways nice to have a few public locations to fall back on, get in talk with local opperators and find out if they can accomidate you, based on TOPL rules you only need 4 machines.  We can even get away with only 3 or 2 machines if we play the same machine twice.

The whole reason that TOPL decided on Monday is because it's the most logical choice.  Weekends are hard, people have familys and spening even one weekend out of every month dedicated to something can interfer with family plans.  But think about it logically for a second, what do you ever do on a Monday night?  I mean me I allways play pinball   But for the average person Monday nights are usually just spent at home anyway, where as weekends are usually tied up with activites.  From my personal perspective I defeintly find it easier to attend every Monday then I would if it were every Saturday as an example.  The Church of the Silver Ball Tournaments suffer from this, but they need to actual time to be able to play out the entire tournament.  I can't make every tournament because I can't dedicate a day every month on the weekend to it.  Lately I haven't been able to go to any COTSB tournaments because I've been so busy on weekends.

Ha! You haven't been to Ottawa recently, have you? The most pins in one location is The Midway, 3 machines. Then again, that was a year ago, so it's probably less.

Hey Jon that is great! You can limit the attendance to a small number of people if that will help convince the Boss Wife.

With a limited number of hosts and no public venues, seems like we need to be more flexible than the Toronto league. How about:

  • Each month someone volunteers to host
  • Host picks the date & time, and maximum number of attendees
  • Not everyone will make it to every meeting, no big deal

If there is enough demand and hosts to meet it, maybe there could be more than one meeting in a given month. Bonus round?

That's the general idea tinyrodent. I think if at the first meeting at Doug's we can nail down a regular schedule ie first or last weekend of the month or whatever then get people to commit to hosting at least until end of June, that would be a good start. I already told Doug I will take Feb. It just so happens that I have the staff Xmas party this weekend and then I'm away at a conference so will miss the next 3 weekends.

I guess the other valid point that Adam brought up to discuss at the meeting is weekend or weekday night? I think the weekend idea flew originally as the first three to offer hosting (ME. Doug and Steph) all have kids so weeknight (at least for me) are homework and activities and decent bedtime for my son. Also means more hassle to find babysitters for a school night  . However, it should be what the majority wants when discussed at the first meeting so...... see what happens.

I'll be sorry to miss the first league meeting but definitely will be at the next!

Have fun guys

Actually. With 3 kids in tow, week-end daytime is premium family time.
(... besides, I coach my son's  basketball from 1:00-3:00 every Saturday afternoon ).

Selfishly speaking, week-nights are better for me...

But like everyone said, pick a time that works for you,
and let people show-up as they can...

I don't think someone who takes care of his family like you do can be called selfish.
I think you are a little hard on yourself.

OK - I've picked a date for starters.   Agree with all comments and a set date would be good, but lets get it off the ground and work on the details afterward.

Saturday, January 17th
2-5pm

Anyone know Shoeguy's phone number?

The games available are:
  • Sure Shot (Gottlieb EM)
  • Bobby Orr Powerplay
  • Sinbad
  • TwilightZone
  • Funhouse
  • Dracula (BSD)

We'll have an excuse for low TZ's scores 'cause the upper-playfield is missing a few scoring switch blades (I've been too lazy to finish researching the part number - it was not easily findable in the TZ manual).   A few games have the "free play dot" but I believe that's because I suck at pinball (too lazy again to check the test report) - hey it was Christmas.

Sorry to those that indicated to me that this date wouldn't work for them, but this Saturday does not work for me, and I want to get the first Ottawa Pinball League (OPL) event going.

Ya, I can run the show. I can't promise to being super organized, it'll be a learning experience, for sure.

Great - no worries - all it takes is the right outfit to look like you know what you are doing:

I coach  Basket-Ball from 1:00-3:00pm .

I "might" make a short guest appearance afterwards,
... but the odds are pretty slim....

Have fun folks !

Have a blast, folks. It's unlikely I'll be able to make it. If I can, I'll drop by for an hour or so.

I would come if I could but since I'm reading this from Orlando, could be a bit of a stretch, Good news is that my hotel has a POTC and a Batman this year. At least the LOTR is gone - YES!   Was hoping for a CSI but I'll find one down here....

Have fun tomorrow. LMK what gets decided for future organized meetings. I can host Feb or March if you like. Just pencil me in where you want.

Good luck guys and gals

The only chance I have of winning is if we only play on Sinbad and Powerplay and even that's a miniscule stretch!

ME: Enjoy the sun!  I'm not jealous at all that we're stuck in -30 weather around here. Not at all...

Some things I should have mentioned to those who are coming:

1) We likely won't hear the doorbell as we are in the basement.   The garage door is open - come in that way, and follow your ears (go down the stairs)
2) Its in the basement - you might want to bring some indoor shoes if your feet get cold.  I'm ok in sock feet, but others might not be.

Phone number if you are lost or can't get in:
613.274.7493

See you soon,
Doug.

Thanks to the hosts for having us over, I had a ball as I'm sure the others felt the same way.  Even if it's for fun, it's very cool to play with a little competition at play and also fun to play with fellow pin fans who just happen to be cool people.
