We spiked momentarily at  1.0012 US this morning.

We're hovering at .9978 US

http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=CADUSD=X

Who else is old enough to remember that ?

( Hint :  We were last at par in 1976 , right before Rene Levesque and the PQ took office in Quebec  )

I sympathize with anyone in the export industry,
but for pin collectors , this is happy day....

Indeed, Paypal takes a 3%-5% premium on currency exchanges.
(... credit cards are almost as bad though...)

I really should start listing my Hobbyroms prices on-line in CDN $
(.. that way, US buyers take the conversion hit, not me... )

This changes everything !

Yea buying the machines out of the states would be the better bargin.

Buying books, cards, anything where the US dollar is the lower amount is cheaper.  I mean you go to Hallmark they stil have the price listed on the back of the card as like $2.30 US and $5.00 CAD, start paying for everything in USD and save yourself a ton o cash.

Wish we could unfortunately all they would do is convert your US to Cdn at par and then charge you the higher rate.. I just saw us go through par on the trading floor right now .. not sure where Yahoo was receiving its data from but at 11:00am or so we were definitely thru par on the North American markets.

If the dollar will sustain this momentum.  I would really like to see prices adjusted for goods imported into Canada.  As some have noted things like greeting cards and books show a disparity in labeled prices.  However I think retail will just ignore this and take advantage as much as the market will bear.

This is a most happy day but not as pin collector (especially for collectors that amassed their collection pre 2002).. it means i've lost 40%.. now i'll have to wait another 10-20 years to recoup.

Generally the market is saying 18-24 months before any major price adjustments (of course there will be some businesses/industries that will move quicker) also in the case of some industries (magazines/books perhaps greeting cards .. there are still number of tariffs and such that increase the price) .. the funny thing is now that we are at par the retail industry as a whole is quoting the large number of fix costs that they have in Cdn $ ..

In the past, I usually found games sold at par anyhow. Plus, most games have increased in the past few years. For example, I paid top dollar for my CV, but the price has continued to increase so it's all balanced out. Probably the same for you. The only exception for me is my HUO LOTR as I did pay essentially USD exchange on it at the time. I would lose big time if I sold it now -- wow just realized how much. Ouch! Doesn't matter, I love the game and it's never going anywhere. I don't regret that decision. Plus, it's a hobby not an investment. We are so spoiled. Most of the time, you can sell a game for what you paid AND you get to enjoy it and play it in the meantime. Try that with the Wii, xBox, Playstation, big screen tv, stereo, etc.

Actually, this is a good point, based on Canadian Consumer law, I beleive they HAVE to sell it to you at the US posted price (in CDN or US cash) on greeting cards, otherwise it would be consumer fraud. I know there have been complaints about this before, but I wonder if anyone has successfuly pushed for the case.

Yes I remember my basic everyday bank savings account earning something like 10% for the longest time, and maybe even going as high as 12% or more.

I have to admit that I'm pretty obilivous to Consumer Law .. but as I understood it Cdn$ are the only legal currency in Canada (maybe I'm being naive)

Most stores post an exchange rate for taking in US cash.  Perhaps it's an arguement of semantics and in that case you've probably hit upon the retailer's defence. THere are tariffs on the import of magazines that jack up the price to Canadians, I know that at least, possibly it's the same with greeting cards.  Save a buck and make em yourself, the whole greeting card industry is one big stupid consumer pit fall in the first place.

One thing to remember.. items that were imported into Canada, the landed cost was calculated months ago.  They won't make adjustments until they order the replinished stock. If they even will for that.

Yeah when is the price of mess going to get equalized up here? Lately I get the feeling we are getting hosed for a differential that does not exist. Not just pins, but on many consumer items.

When you go to buy a book it really pisses me off that they have two prices and they are hugely different. Not to mention vehicles and other high ticket items.

Not only do I remember it being at par in the 70's, I remember being at a hotel in the states and buying rolls of quarters at the front desk. When you gave them a $10 Canadian bill, they gave you a roll and a single quarter. Never appreciated it at the time, too busy playing the hell out of the machines down by the pool!
