Sweat - never played in Montreal - but brings back memories - changing bills for quarters, and the style.

Should have a pin meeting where we dress-up as in the 80's... and only 80's era games...

That's awesome, thanks for sharing the find.

Man, I wish those days never died.. being only 32, I can only remember the seedier, darker days of arcades.. when they became drug havens.

I grew up in Calgary. Arcades in malls were always clean and trouble free. The local ones aournd my house were great and no problems. Even the massive one on 8th Ave was fantastic. Now the one on what is now the LRT route....oh boy. Even going to it, you were asked if you wanted drugs.

I like your thinking. I'll have to look for my sweet thin black leather tie and a red shirt with black pants. I was a chick magnet in the 80s Oh how times have changed   !

Wow.  Memories!

That brings up a question I keep forgetting to ask.  Can you realistically play Tempest on a MAME arcade bab without a spinner?

Golden years... there were arcades EVERYWHERE in Montreal then! Sad to see it now. I remember as a kid in 1982 I used to play at Le Spot bowling in Cartierville, RIGHT beside Redketchup's work (shameless plug: OPTIONVISION CARTIERVILLE!!! 12245 GRENET!!! 514-331-4747). My mom was in a bowling league and she took me along every Friday night. There was a dozen pins and over 25 vids at all times. Just awesome.

The place is a dump now. It has 5 crappy vids, none working properly, including a Ms.Pacman in a generic cab.

Sad...

I grew up in Vaudreuil, Still, videos like that brings memory.

but both my parents did too play bowling in leagues in Waldo in Dorion.  There was a few pins, a few vids, and a few pool tables.
I played games like Pacman, Baby pacman, Spy hunter and pinbot.

I haven't dared going back there in years, I wonder what it looks like nowaday

Hmm ... would be cool to own an old bowling alley though. Make it retro with a bunch of arcades... I know someone bought Valdo recently.

are they going to revamp it?

Restauring it retro style would be awesome. I know I'd go.
They need a good marketing if they want it to live, people in this region underestimate the power of being known...

No, that arcade you are thinking of Max was called Forum Amusements, and was on the south side of Ste.Catherine street across from the Kent Brasserie and adjacent to the Texan Restaurant which made the corner of Fort and Ste.Catherine. I got my first part time job as a sort of technician's helper in that arcade. I assisted a tall lanky fellow who was there on site full time, his name was Danny and I thought he was King mess. I was his helper at 5.00/hr two days a week. I remember the first job I did there was change a flipper coil on a fairly new Jungle Lord, and screwed it up, so it was the summer of 1982 probably.

The first arcade you see in the footage was the INTERNATIONAL arcade and it is the exact same building where Amusement 2000 is now located. The other one that just said AMUSEMENT was just across the street from Cyrstal Palace a few streets east of Crescent, probably near Drummond, north side of Ste.Cathrine. Or maybe I am wrong, and the Karum arcade that was just called AMUSEMENT was on the south side near crescent, I think Crystal palace was closer to Drummond. My, how memories and facts get messed in and through time.

I do remember that my girlfriend at the time use to give change at Cyrstal Palace and I did the same at Casino Royale near Bleury, we would both finish at midnight and go out on the town after work until the bars closed at 3AM, and then we would crash out at dawn, sometimes on the church lawn near Bishop street.

mess, too many memories again. That's what it adds up to when you stay alive too long. Memories just pile up higher and higher and you desperately need to stay above them in order not to get bogged down.

Wow, someone who remembers the places as well as I do!  Yes, that is the Amusement 2000 and you can tell by the inclined area in the front of the locale and that all the pins where on the right side of the place and most vids throughout the left side and middle area.  The other two closest arcades were indeed near Drummond (to the right of where Victoria Secret is now I believe) on the North side and right across the street on South side was the other right at the corner lot.

It sounds like you had good times back then being downtown. Thanks for sharing.

When watching this video, I think of how bad the quality is and how amazing even a basic cel. phone video cam is these days, 30 years later.  In 30 years, footage from 2010 will be so amazingly archived/clear/stereo sound even....

Vids: Crystal Castles, Gauntlet/Gauntlet II, Donkey Kong Jr., Ms. Pac-Man, Vs. Super Mario Bros. (other Vids in storage - for now)

Advancements in technology have come to point where systems operate on the borderline of human comprehension. It's only through the structured approach that furtherance in technology has taken place and that we are able to continue to develop. By virtue of this requirement we are forced to be disciplined in our approach to technology and that discipline is admirable. Maybe I am just an old fart but I have the same appreciation as you of where we were and where we have progressed with respect to electronic technology over the last 30+ years. I was listening to Isao Tomita last night playing Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D and thinking how easy it would be to re-create this on a PC synth with a sequencer while at the same time having some appreciation of what Tomita had to go through with technology he used when he recorded it.

I believe it is the extension of technology into a form of art and entertainment that gives me the greatest appreciation for this hobby.

Much of society has become irreverent to technology due to having little appreciation for the complexity behind it. A white IPod is not desirable but a red one now is.

Yeah I know now I'm sounding like an old fart but F'it!
