Hey all,

Well, since the MPL is on it's way of truly happening, I do have a few questions on which I would like to get your feedback on.

1- Entry charge or league fees... what would you recommend? Of course, if free, that kind of eliminates any chance of prizes in the end... for now at least. If a minimal fee is charged, then our webmaster can get a bit, a host can get a bit, and the rest goes to a prize pool.

2- Rules... Vengeance sent me a link to the TOPL rules. Here: http://www.topl.org/rules.html . I agree with what he told me... looks like a lot, but it really is simple. I do like the median rule for a 3-player game. Easy to monitor.

Anything else that could come to mind, please, by all means, post on it. I would like for these meets to be fun and "light"... not super competitive. Almost more of a meeting than a competition.

And how do you feel about a vids section as well? I believe that there should be a vids division. Why not? I have both vids and pins, and I would think it cool to have a vids tourney as well. I personally love to watch a skilled player on a vid. Always fun to see...

Let me know what you think.

How much?

That is the question ! As proposed before , meetings would be once a month and i ' m willing to drive 2 and a half to 3 hres = some $40.00 gaz $$$ round trip . So , i ' d say $10.00 to make it a $ 50.00 expense in my case ...

My opinion ...

Well it can be free to start, let's say for the first three months... than we will really know if people are serious and after that.

And maybe small entry charge like 5$

1$ for the webmaster,  2$ for the host and 2$ for the prizes.

I don't really care about prizes in the end... because I'm won't win, but for the fun of it, why not.

What will be the prize? Winner of the night have is entry charge back and the rest go to a big pot for the cup ( probably not enough people to give prizes for the first three places).

TOPL fees work like this:

$30 gets you an entire 15 week season and entry to the Playoffs.

We have a $5 host fee that everyone pays regardless of if they paid the $30 membership fee or not.  This $5 fee is only present at private members locations.  The $5 goes to the host to help pay for any food/drink they might put out, electricity for running all the games, and parts for repairing the machines.

If someone wants to come to a league night and they have not paid their $30 they can pay a $2 fee and this will allow them to participate that night.  The $2 fee does not grant them entry into the playoffs and is not banked toward the cost of entry to the playoffs, if a player decides he wants to play in the playoffs he will still have to pay the $30 then.

Playoffs cost $30 for anyone who would like to participate that hasn't paid their league fee and $20 for any previous member who has paid the $30 at some point.

100% of all money taken in is paid out at Playoffs.

My suggestion, I think a $50 price point might be a bit high, I wouldn't mind $50 in TOPL but I have a good shot at winning the top cash prize so I'd be willing to put up the extra cash.  But TOPL does have a B division for members so even lower skilled players would still have a shot at a cash prize, which would be larger by the fact the league fees were higher.  I think the $30 price tag works epically for what you are getting, it works out to only $2 a night and you get playoffs for  "free" so to speak, so 16 weeks of pinball with a awesome afternoon/evening of pinball at the playoffs.  $30 is cheap enough that most people don't mind

The $5 host fee is something we started really only the last 2 years or so, it's a way to compensate hosts for opening up their home as we were finding we were starting to cause undue burden on some hosts when 30 people showed up for a league night.  Now when were able to give them $150 if 30 people do show up, it really lightens the load and lets them know they are appreciated as we have some host locations that don't participate in the league anymore.

Don ' t know how to quote part of the text . I ' d like to know how ! thanks .

As for the TOPL set up , it could be used as a model and then mold by the administration in order to fit the MPL ...

I like the TOPL model. Of course, I can't ask members to pay 30$ right off the bat. More like 15$ league fee to start, then a 5$ fee per tournament. MacPhreak will get half of the 5$ fee for stats and keeping the website up to date. The other half can go to the host if he/she wants it. League fees will go to pay for season prizes. Playoffs would be roughly like 10$ to start...

Hmm... OK... I have a good idea on where to start...

OK... I think we will go for 15$ league entry fee, 5$ per meeting. Once we get to late spring, we will have a playoff at 10$ total entry.

For season play, there will be a prize for the season champ and a couple of participation draws. And for the playoffs, it will be pretty much all that will be invited since we are starting out, and players will be matched according to their season performances.

I don't know when the OPL wants to hold their first official meeting, but I suspect it will be early September... so I will tentatively schedule the first MPL meeting on Saturday September 26th. That gives me time to prepare a bit...

(Exemple Ms Pac-Man)

Do you take name?  Good to know how many are really interested, this will help to know how to charge and how you divided the money... really have make clear what the prize(s) will before taking money, some people stressed more when money is around...

And who can received peoplesw at home... we need a different machines for a league.  If we don't have many people who want to host we don't really need to start a league... just make little meeting and make a little pot for the night (like a poker night)

Do you think making meeting only in the weekend? I think the other league played night weeks too.

As for attendance, I believe we should just take it meeting by meeting. If there are 10 members in the end, then there will be 150$ up for grabs. I have tohought of having a machine as a prize, but not many can handle that. And as for stressing out due to money, I wouldn't worry about it. Considering the amounts involved, I sincerely doubt people will go crazy for 15$. Besides, I will be financing a couple of things for the MPL anyways, so I will be the one taking the hit the most.

But if people prefer not to have any prizes at all after a while, we can adjust accordingly.

Of course, we will be looking into hosting in different areas. Right now, I am just getting the ball rolling. If another person wants to host one month, not a problem. What we want to do on the MPL website is post a list of machines that are available for play. Right now, there are only mine, but that can (and will) change. All I need to have is a PM stating that someone wants to host one month. Easy as that.

And as for nightly pots, yes, that also can be done... but there seems to be more interest in a league. Meetings with a single tourney have been done and lost interest fast. But again, if some people want to do a side-pot for a single evening (like a couple of bucks each), that is no problem at all... it can be done.

And as for weeknight tournaments, I find through experience that few turn up then, unless they are very close by. Many TOPL members live close to each other, while MTL members are a bit spread out. Besides, most of us have kids and responsibilities that make free time a bit short. Saturday or Sunday afternoons are a bit easier to handle.

That's not really true at all, I'd say the average travel time for any TOPL member to any given location is 45mins to an hour, I know I travel 1 hour and 45 mins some Mondays to get to a location and this is all one way, so 1 1/2 hour to 3 hours travel time every Monday.

Also we have members from all walks of life, from parents to guys in college.  The people that want to make time, will make time.

Also I think weeknights work well because, really on any given weeknight what do you have to do after work?  The answer is most likely nothing, but weekends are usualy full of stuff, work around the house, time with the family, trips here and there.  I used to wonder why TOPL was on a Monday, but after a while it's just makes sense, I know if it was a weekend, I'd never be able to commit as much as I can now because it's on a Monday.

Quoted from HAL-9OOO

(Exemple Ms Pac-Man)

All valid points... I guess I want to see what people think first before making a firm decision. I will have the first meeting on a weekend and see from there.

Quoted from Vengeance

No problem. I can take a loaner, and work on it a bit as compensation.

Then , the only ones that could have body work to be done to it would be the mars trek or the faces , with those press wood cabinet and backbox . Heavy to moove and EMs ???

That goes to a discussion about having an official headquarters... not going to happen anytime soon. If I had a double garage or an empty basement, maybe...

If I have anyone bring me a game in order to loan it for a season, or a meeting or whatever, I rather it be also because the game needs work at the same time. If one of the 2 pins you proposed needs a clearcoat or something, then OK, but as I stated, my gamespace is rather limited. If I get rid of my project vids, and place Wizard of Wor somewhere else, and put my airbrush equipment away, I can fit AT MOST 9, maybe 10 pins in the basement, and if I have nothing in the workshop, maybe another 3 there.

Funny thing is, I have thought of converting my workshop into a gameroom at some time, but that would completely eliminate any chance of me being able to work on machines.

Maybe if I extend the garage one day...

OK, so I have a good idea what direction to take for the MPL. I will be writing a rules sheet and league conditions during the week of the 10th. All will be published on latest the 17th.

As for dates for meetings and noted hosts, let's get the ball rolling first. I have scheduled a September and October meeting at my place. I should be able to accomodate for as long as it is needed to get the whole thing started. If other people want to host, all they have to do is contact me.

As for prizes, there will be trophies and cash prizes at the end of the season and after the playoffs. All will be described soon. Pretty much all I need is a name for a playoff trophy... I have a few ideas.

Translation:

Yes, we could do a meeting on a week night, but then we limit who can come to it. I am not so sure that people in the QC City area will drive 6 hours round trip on a week night to attend a meeting... they would have to leave at 4pm to get there for 7pm... rather a lot to ask.

As I stated, we will do the first couple of meetings on weekends. If outside participation is not much of a factor, then we can transfer it to a week night, like a Thursday or Friday night.

Just had an idea . I think that there would be enough members in the Quebec city area to form a ligue as well , The QCPL ! Why not , coconut !!! . That would get me and other members from my area , out of the picture for the MPL . I ' ll try and see what could come out ...

There... done. I scheduled it fro Friday September 25th and Friday October 23rd. If there is interest, I can change it to bi-monthly, or go for another weeknight if desired. Let's give it a try...

Retiring soon...

I'd keep Adam's "$2 if you haven't paid league fees" option in there somehow.   Then someone can come for one night and pay $7 and still feel good.   I doubt many will say no to $7, but it your first night is $20 that might prevent a few from coming...

I forgot, we have a Free night for first time members as well.

So if someone who has never shown up to the league before comes out for one night, they get a free ride.  They are still responsible for the host fee, but no league fees are charged.
