Thought you guys might find this interesting.

Walmart is currently testing new format Superstores the first of which opened this week in Texas.  The new stores feature and in-store arcade called  "Gameplay".  The arcades are a joint venture with Sega.

If successful Walmart may expand the format to new Supercenters and remodelled stores.

A little bit of good news in dark times for the coin-op industry.

Interesting concept. they've got the traffic for it, and there is still a bit of life in vids....(pinball is all but dead thank goodness, even if Stern pukes out a few more of their movie-based tragedy boxes) but I think Wal-Mart will quickly deduce that flipping sketchy clothing made in India is more profitable than running an Arcade.

I was at one near the Michigan state line that had a family fun center with a bunch of vids and kids rides. Who want's to play FnF though? That game is hella lame.

Proof that I believe that vids are dying as well... all they seem to be coming out with now are driving games and boring simulators.

Sad.

Retiring soon...

I was at the same Wal-Mart and counted 14 - yes, *fourteen* - crane games throughout the store. You know what's killing pins? Crane games. Maybe TDK is the answer!

I'm fine with driving sims, I actually really enjoy driving sims. Terrible games based on horrible franchises (a la Fast and the Furious) do nothing for me. Give me a good Gran Turismo style arcade racer, and that machine will own my wallet.

Cooke, I can't believe you actually counted them.  /me *shakes head*...

At least it wasn't THIRTY SEVEN crane machines...

I was at a Wal-Mart in Presque-Isle, Maine this weekend and it was all crane games as well.  There was one Fast and the Furious racer and some other random driving game but that was about it.

Maybe Sears should start an arcade with some of those $7000 Indys they've got in their catalogue.

But if you could just pop in a $1 and see that the game is boring as hell, they wouldn't sell any.

I agree it's a dog for home, but I enjoyed playing it on location...at least for a play or two. Certainly doesn't have the staying power of many other games, but the MB is kinda cool and the light show was nice. Even though I b**** about TBK, I'd probably drop some coin in one as well if I could find one on location.

You're saying you found an IJ4 on location? Where?

Sorry, should have said, "When I played it at Starburst". It was easier to write location.
