In the Spirit of Valentines day, I really want to try and love my new WPT. I want to keep it, especially since its in perfect shape. Mike put the newest ROMS in ( TKS!!) and I've played about 3 hours straight on it   . It does have a great theme, but I still don't totally understand what the real goal of the game is. Does anybody else have one??  Also, the drop targets look like a problem. They reset erratically, some staying down all the time when they should not, and others not registering when you knock them down. I seem to recall hearing that the drops were an issue with this game. I wonder if someone has developed a fix of some sort to deal with the issues? I like the idea of having to go for different poker hands by shooting the drops, but if they're always going to be a problem, then whats the point? The loud sound the game makes resetting the targets each time you make one of the poker hands is a little annoying too.

So does anybody else out there have one of these? If not and you need one bad. don't despair, I have another one coming!!!!

...You figure that with 40+ years of experience and knowledge out there on drop target systems, you would think that they would develop a simple, quiet system for targets... especially when oddly enough, the older Sterns were known to have great drop target systems. A complaint in the 80's was that Williams had a funky system that jammed a lot, Ballys didn't always drop down when hit directly, but Stern targets worked like butter, super smooth.

Mind you, and this is not an attack on Stern as I do like most of their new stuff, I do find the mechanicals on new Sterns to be excessively loud. I will never forget playing Sopranos for the first time and seeing the fish on the playfield chatting away... the sound on the pin was set a bit low and all I heard was CLACK CLACK CLACK... the sound of the fish's mechanical jaw clacking away was actually burying the sound from the speakers.

In terms of the drop target noise, it's not a fair comparison to say older game had/have less noise. Most games have one solenoid for 3 or 4 drop targets. In the case of WPT, each and every target has it's own solenoid. The reason is the game is designed so every target can go up and down independently. I don't know how many targets WPT has, but it is alot and it does make alot of noise when they go up and down. Compare the sound to six pinball machines being played by 2 year olds -- and they are constantly hitting the flippers -- that will give you an idea of what it the targets sound like going up and down.

That's why I mostly stick to widebodies... my son can't reach both flipper buttons at once!

I dunno... I owned an Alien Poker in the past with a multiple-solenoid setup and it wasn't so noisy... economics I guess... cheaper build = more profits.

I never played it... I guess it is one of those "it's-all-in-the-theme" pins.

I owned an Alien poker as well. You have to see under WPT to believe it. It's got a TON of solenoids. I mean a TON.

Back to Jim's original question, I tried the game when it came out and it did nothing for me. Supposedly, the latest ROMs, that you have installed, really improve the game play. I suggest reading r.g.p to learn about the improvements.

This thread is all but prepared for some Stern bashing, but I have decided to

I agree. I think they have commented enough on the lackluster play and mechanical deficiencies that no further commentary is required.

Have you hugged your William's today?
