Any suggestions.? Not as much for board work but rather just under playfeild applications . I was told that when working on boards you need lower wattage .

I bought this Tenma model when it was on sale for 50% off.

I've found it to be acceptable for board work and for playfield components. It has multiple styles of tips and is reliable. It's vastly superior to any crap Radio Shack sells. If it's not a temperature controlled soldering station, don't bother.

MCM often has sales on their soldering stations and you can usually pick one up for around $50. You won't get the top-of-the-line Weller for that price, but you'll probably find it does the trick for you. See here for MCM's full selection of soldering stations:

This is the station I use:
http://mcmelectronics.com/product/WELLER-WLC100-/21-3475

I've had it for 6 years and haven't had a problem with it. There are a wide variety of tips available for it, and I use it to do board work and general soldering. The tip that comes with it is good for coils and larger stuff, but you will want to order a ST6 or ST7 tip for doing any fine board work.

''La source'' have very nice iron ajustable between 15-60 watts, very usefull for big and hard to melt solder. It is not necessary to buy a temperature controlled iron for under playfield job, it is not usefull at all, only for small solder on pcb. Temperature controlled is absolutely necessary for pcb unless you are very skill to control the temperature yourself
