I think ATI was more recognized then AMD. But what do I know.  The Canadian company is 100% dead now .

It's just a rebranding, here's hoping he's safe

I hear ya!  I'm not sure how much "Canada" was left after AMD bought it though.. did they keep the HQ here?

The "ATi" brand will be missed, along with 3DFX (remember those guys?)

Will the AMD brand really raise the inferred value? I always considered AMD a budget brand for their processors. However, I might still be experiencing residual tremors from owning AMD Athlon 1.4Ghz Thunderbird. When that s.o.b. was on, it sounded like a generator and gave off about as much heat.

I always considered Ati and Nvidia to be bitter rivals, upstaging each other every 3 months. Video graphics technology, as well as CPU speeds, have to plateau at some point where the technology out-performs the programmers and consumer 'needs', i.e. gamers, to point that improvements are imperceptible to the average Joe/mindless consumer. I suppose the brand merge might save some stationary costs.

Diamond bought 3DFX back in the day AFAIK.  They killed it though after they couldn't compete with ATi or Nvidia

What's in a name?

One of the guys I used to work with was an electronics engineer and started with ATI back in the early 90's. What he told me is was internet had picked up some steam and companies like ATI were looking at the value of owing their domain name under .com. ati.ca at the time was owned by ATI but ati.com was owned by a guy that sold plastic poo; yes fake poo. Artificial Turds Incorporated and could be found at ati.com. Needless to say ATI needed to get this back since plastic poo did not reflect well on their brand. I have no idea what the guy got in the end but he did sell the domain.
