Good day, folks. I'm trying to find out why the 2.5 A fuse (located in the back box, lower right hand board) keeps blowing. This disables the 3 bumpers, as well as the ball launcher that feeds the ball shooter. Once the fuse is replaced, I get a game or two out of it, then the ball launcher takes on a life of it's own, and keeps triggering. Then the fuse blows again, and I'm back at square one.

Any Ideas?

Thanks
Mike

EAT... GORGAR.... MEAT.... or something like that, eh?

Read this:
http://www.pinrepair.com/sys37/index3.htm#trans2
I'd suspect one of those coils (your pop bumpers or ball launch) is problematic, or the transistors to those coils is problematic, or the PIA chip is problematic, or the chips before the PIA is problematic, or the 40 pin connector is problematic, or any of the connectors are problematic....

Good luck!
Daniel

As mentioned by McMean, typical issue with these games are:

- bad 40-pin interconnect MPU to driver board;
- bad sockets for chips (especially for EPROMS).
- plus, short driver transistor/bad coil
(but the 2.5A fuse would blow immediately on power-up in that case)

Any slight vibration or temperature change will cause trouble
with the above stuff, until connectors and sockets are replaced.

Easy to do if you are used to soldering and board repairs.
But not as easy if you never have done it - although there is
a lot of info on the web now...

Good luck & Cheers,
- Sylvain.

Make sure the switch for the coil that "takes on a life of its own" isn't gapped too close.   That would be the easiest potential problem to solve.

Yeah, you're right.  Hey Turbonium, I'd go with Cooke's suggestion first, and then really get into that 40 pin connector.  If the problem persists, post again.  Do you know how to use a logic probe?  I've had bad experiences with this system, but others are very knowledgeable and not nearly as jaded.    Another great resource is to check out old posts on RPG (rec.pinball.games) - lots of very experienced pin repair info there.

Welcome!  and truly, Good luck!

I always felt that you were a decent guy Dan, (gut feeling only ofcourse, since we've never met). And once again, the "gut" ends up telling the real story.

Cheers,

Robert

...someone has to come out with a 40-pin replacement kit. I was thinking of doing it myself. 5 years ago I picked up a bulk lot of 20-pin 0.156" connectors (well over 100). I guess I could replace those damn things with a wiring harness. All that would be needed is header pins and some wire. No biggie. The driver board would have to be lowered though.

Hmm... time to pick up a Williams.

Retiring soon...

I'm fixing a Williams sys 6 right now and you really have to do the 40 pin and really checked for the socket on the MPU... but normally this for reset or locked-up problem, I didn't know it can cause a coil to go crazy...
