Ready for the biggest fix prediction of the playoffs

Philly will beat NJ

Now I'm a Philly fan, but they totally shouldn't beat NJ in the first round.
(i.e. Philly's #1 goalie is 33yr old Brian Boucher who didn't start a single game between Dec. 23 and March 16th)

Watch the series and look for:
-Low penalties on Philly...just like last year with the Pens "dramatic" rise to the cup
-High penalties on NJ
-A couple disallowed goals
-Weird calls helping Philly (offsides, too many men, etc.)

This will lead the way to a final four match up of:

Was. vs. Pitt
Chi vs. Det
(the ultimate dream situation for the NHL)

The west is a little different (i.e. doesnt need to be as fixed as the East)
....The NHL wouldn't mind seeing VAN or SJ go far (appease Canada, and not look too fixed "again" with an early exit of SJ)

p.s. Philly wont be happy when in the 2nd round the "penalty tide" sways and all the calls start going Washinton's way...watch for them to lose their temper and hurt someone like Ovechkin or Semin....the guy who hurts one of these guys will be in MEGA crap by the NHL(odds are its Pronger, or Carcillo)

1st round East winners:
Was.
Philly
----------
Buff.
Pitt.

2nd round East winners:
Was.
Pitt.

Now for the West winners:
SJ
Det.
----
Van.
Chi.

Nah, it's gonna be a Jets Vs. Nordiques final, after Winnepeg bumps off the Whalers in the semis.

If it's so fixed to maximize revenue, why don't we see the same teams in the finals every year. Colour me skeptical

Dirty refs buddy....I'm tellin' ya! Bettman sets which refs do which game...All he has to do is pick the ones that are in his pocket, and Bob's your uncle....the teams he wants to go on, do.

Interesting way to test this bet is to see who reffed the Pittsburg games last year...If those guys are reffing the Philly game, then the fix is in!

I gotta say my minds with Hippo though.   Good argument on the Leafs side.

What I find odd is the commentators must be under strick guidelines to not discuss penalty indifference's too much.    Early in the season the Sens were the only team to have 3 or more games where they never had a power play.   Also, just blindly comparing "total penalties" is weak because early penalties / power-plays can give a team the advantage.   I'd love to see kind of stat that measure power-plays awarded while even-strength, within a goal, etc.

Biased of course, but often-times my home team would be carrying the play in the opening period and then be called on an minor infraction giving the other team the momentum.

I agree with Jonny. Assuming there is a conspiracy, the NHL has poorly chosen the supposed beneficiaries. The Leafs market is the biggest in the NHL and they haven't come out on top in years.

Also, consider the fever dream Bettman holds near and dear to his heart for a southern American hockey renaissance. Wouldn't that drive teams like Phoenix and Dallas further up the rigged standings?

Agreed by the conspiracy logic Betteman would have had the Rangers or Islanders or Devils in every other cup final for TV ratings, as well Chicago wouldn't have been away from the playoffs for as long as they had been. It ain't fixed !

Not true.

-Phoenix finished 4th in the west....that's huge for a team with nobody on it. Their best player is Doan, and he only had 54 points all season.........FIX FIX FIX

-Leafs already have a loyal fan base and tons of money, why give them a cup, until they have to?

-Pittsburgh almost lost their team...anyone remember "Ball-silly" trying to buy it?!?! Them miraculously they make the cup final one year, then win the cup the year after. The team is now worth triple, and never leaving Pittsburgh. Meanwhile NHL was trying as hard as they could to make Crosby the posterboy of the league, but "Mr. Badass" Ovechkin kept stealing his thunder....a cup was all Crosby needed to earn the poster for all the suckers who think he's better than Ovechkin.

-NHL is all about ratings....no one will tune in to watch Buffalo, Ottawa, NJ, Philly, etc, etc....in the finals, However, both Canada and USA will tune in for Chi. vs. Det. (a very long standing, and mega huge, rivalry). And they tuned-in in record totals for the Winter Classic between the two teams. Washington and Pittsburg....come on!!!! Crosby vs. Oveckin in the final 4....dream come true for the NHL!!!!!! People will be watching this all across Europe!!! NJ vs. Buff....meh who cares? Even people in those cities wont be watching...

So every time a big market team does well it's evidence of the conspiracy. Every time a smaller market team does well (Calgary vs Tampa?!), it's just the conspirators trying to hide the conspiracy. You can't lose! This is what we call an unfalsifiable theory.

Huh?!? Who said that? Whoever the NHL wants to win, wins.....If its Tampa, so be it. They needed a cup more then anyone back in the day. Look at them now? Same team, and consistently at the bottom of the league....but not leaving Tampa anymore.

The NHL weighs out who needs revenue (Leafs don't need revenue!!!!), and popularity to stay in the city, and pays off the refs accordingly so they get the results they want.

They are first, and foremost, trying to sell the game to the Southern USA and Europe....this was Bettman mandate when he was first brought in (sell the game to the States)...and he's been doing it ever since.

It seems convenient that you can discover some 'reason' behind every success and failure of a team. You're seeing intention where none may exist. So  how can your theory be tested/falsified? Do you predict that the winner of the playoffs will be a team that hasn't won the cup in a while, and is about to go out of business? Is that what happened in the past 5 years?

How do you know what the NHL wants? You just figure out what the NHL wanted after the fact.

Ive just predicted what the NHL wants.....duh Its the whole point of the thread!

Pit. vs. Was
Chi. vs. Det

final Chi. vs Was

And proof will be seen when Philly beats/upsets NJ, with the same refs who reffed Pittsburgh last year.....which in the end makes it so Pitt plays Was in the dream-come-true situation for the NHL....watch and see, my awesomeness at filtering through Bettmans B.S. league!

one thing that *IS* fixed is the location of the teams.  Sad to say, but I don't think Canada will ever see a new team for a long, long time (if ever).

Well, with the parity of the dollar, that might change, no? Wasn't a big obstacle the high player salaries due to paying all the players in US $?

Just did a quick search for the "suspect refs"

-O'Halloran
-McCreary
-Devorski

Go figure, Devorski is reffing the Sens/Pens game right now....he's got a rookie ref teamed up with him (suspicious)...little new guy trying to get in good with Bettman maybe?

-Anyways, suspect calls right away against the Sens, leading to a PP goal by the Pens, surprise surprise!

-Sens battled back 11 shots to 4, and scored two goals

***Ready for this prediction****
Many more penalties against  the Sens....Pens win the game.

Sens and Pens are right up there as the worst offenders for penalties, they're 3rd (Pens) and 5th (Sens) out of all 16 Playoff teams by most regular season PIM! I expect each team to boucne back and forth with brutal penalty minutes each game. Your penalty argument...debunked.

Coaches Corner already call-out the diving on Talbot and coincidentally that was 2 power plays to Pittsburgh.

I didn't know Bettman chose the refs.   I would have thought that was a lottery or something.

McCreary is my least favorite for sure.

EIther way, one thing I like about the Sens and Clouston is he seems to have a strict rule that the players don't whine to the ref...

He lives with Mario Lemieux, who was the greatest whiner the NHL ever had. I always HATED Lemieux as a player for that, especially when he was 6-4 and 225lbs. I see crosby and he is the same. I think he is completely full of mess. He smiles great for the camera but cries like a baby when someone even touches him. I can't wait until Ruutu makes him go completely nuts...

As much as I don't like Ovechkin's dirty playing sometimes, I like him better... if you hit him, he hits you back even harder.

Nope... I have a feeling the Caps will take it tonight, but we will take the second one in Washington.

But... then again, I do have 5 bucks on 400:1 odds that the Habs take it in 4. That would be sweet.

Maybe Bettman is a Scientologist.....hmmmmm? And Maybe he only lets other Scientogists into his private "owners group". Ah ha! Thats why Ball-silly couldn't get a team.

p.s. If Tom Cruise or Jon Travolta get a hockey team...we here on MAACA now know the "real" story behind NHL ownership!

Actually forget about Dallas and Phoenix ... the Trashers are owned/were owned by one the wealthest TV moguls around ... and yet they have never ..... ever .... had any success in the playoffs .. If the  tiny perfect commissioner was fixing things this franchise would be a dyansty and on TBS every game, instead they are nearly bankrupt and looking to move (albight to a hockey hotbed like Kansas City / Portland or Las Vegas)

OK... now I am not writing this because I am a Habs fan, but tonight's game just reinforced the theory that it is fixed.

1- Washington was tripping and cross-checking all game... not all calls were made.
2- I saw 2 bullshit penalties for tripping and breaking sticks against the Habs
3- Caps were hitting Halak like crazy... nothing.

and the kicker...

4- Pouliot rushes the goal with a Caps player on each side. Caps can't contain him so they trip him and drag him down right towards the net. Varlamov is completely out of position and the puck, now on Gionta's stick, shoots it in, but Pouliot, dragged by the 2 Caps players knock the goal off.

If you look at the sequence, you see clearly the Caps player on the right of Pouliot, falling and moving himself right in front of Pouliot's skates in order to trip him. Possible penalty shot.

AND... there is a rule in the NHL that stipulates that if in the circumstance that a goal would have inevitably been scored if the net was i place, the goal should be awarded.

No penalty shot.

No penalty.

No goal.

Pure bullshit. The NHL wants their precious Ovechkin in the second round...

Many more penalties against  the Sens....Pens win the game.

... and just for fun, guess who reffed the Habs/Caps game tonight...

O'Halloran and Devorski.

Well, if the NHL being fixed is the price I pay for not seeing the Habs advance, then... so be it!  Fix away!  Go 'Whoever' the NHL wants to win!

I hate the Habs like a canker sore... but even I'd admit the game I just watched didn't have such great reffing... mostly around the goalie interference stuff.

And guess who reffed the last Pengiuns game (which they won) and was a total nut show by the Pens.....McCreary

So many penalties should have been called by on the Pens. Heck even a few possible suspensions. However, all the talk was "will  Sens player Sutton get suspended for his clean hit"

Funny thing is the commentators on The TEAM radio show even mentioned a reffing problem with the other ref (Walsh)
"Now Walsh has a *long history* of not calling blatant penalties when they happen to the Senators players"

I almost fell out of my chair when I heard them say that (I was driving to a friends house while the game was on).......Guess I'll be seeing Walsh for the rest of the Pens/Sens series. Or they will ship O'Halloran and Devorski over to these games, and send McCreary and Walsh(or some rookie ref) over to the MTL/WAS game. NHL is SAD

Who's the ref's tonight Hippo?

Already Ottawa has momentum and they call Kelly on a light roughing call?   Immediately after killing it Fisher is upended on a rush and no call.

I call BullSh*t on the NHL!!

Don Cherry's all but calling it out, too.   Another Coach's Corner highlighting the bad calls against the Sens regarding the Kelly roughing call....

Too Many Men Penalty:  You can read Clouston's mouth to the linesman in the 3rd - F-OFF!

Sutton's Hooking - WTF

No delay of game penalty on Penguins when shooting over glass - WTF

Horrible!

The refs are sucking big time.  I was at the Sens game last night and it is the first time in a long time that the fans actually got really worked up over the calls.  They were chanting "Refs suck" and "Bull$%#^".  Some many missed calls.  It also seems like there is a rule that no one is allowed to touch Crosby.  I see the NHL setting this up to be a showdown between the Caps and the Pens in the east.  Talk about a revenue cow. And since the NHL is supporting a number of US teams, I can see why they need the money.  Cherry and others are calling out the refs for their favourtism and suspicious calls. Just look at the Lidstrom play from the bench and he didn't get called on it.

Sens will be done on Thursday.  I just don't want to see Crosby win again.  I am fine with the cup going to the Caps.

I believe this has to be the worst playoffs ever. I wholeheartedly agree that the Habs were outclassed by the Caps, but it is getting so damn obvious that the NHL want a Crosby/Ovechkin confrontation. It just screams out. I watched some of the Ottawa game and I just shut it off after a while. It just turned me completely off. And to be honest, even if it was the other way, with the Sens and Habs being advantaged, I would still feel the same way.

And everybody is talking about it. Even out of Ottawa and Montreal. A friend of mine in NY, who is a newbie-fan of hockey, even noticed the missed calls.

Although I hate to think about conspiracy theory's... think back to leafs and kings....and the infamous high stick noncall... sigh

i havent got a chance to watch any playoff games yet... been to busy... and the highlights fail to show the "whole story"

i still will refuse to think the nhl is rigged until the leafs win the cup

The Leafs don't have to win the cup, or even make the playoffs. Toronto is the only city in which fans will still fill up an arena completely even though the team is complete shyte.

Actually... strike that... Boston and Montreal are almost the same. Harry Sinden (long-time Boston GM) had the perfect business plan. Give the fans 3-4 years of complete garbage on the ice, and then when you see the fans have had enough and are about to leave, invest a bit of money and give them a team that will win a couple of playoff rounds. Then the fans are happy again so you have the green light to penny-pinch for another 3-4 years.

Mind you, the Habs are like that since the Nordiques left... and since there is no other hot-rivalry team to make them look bad, they don't try too hard.

But come on Toronto fans... 43 years of almost being laughed at... after this last stretch, I would have burned all memorabilia I would own.

Not being able to touch a star player isn't new, ever hear of a lad named Gretzky?

There will always be 'missed calls' in a game, the game would come to a stop if everything was called.  And if you think the refereeing was the fall of the Sens, then how do you explain the SHG?  At some point you need to look at the players on the ice, in particular an average at best goaltender.

In no way am I blaming the fall of the Sens in the playoffs on the officials. That would be pretty short sighted. What I have noticed in all games and not just the Sens series, is a general lack of consistency. Sure they can't see everything but in several cases the penalty happened right in from of them and they sill managed to miss it.  At the end of the day all I want is consistency regardless of who walks away with Lord Stanley.

Shots were Pens 42, Sens 30

So by NHL stats (1 goal for every 10 shots) the game should have been about 4-3. Yeah Sens would have lost anyways based on that.....but come on.

The calls/lack of calls were brutal....How can the Sens get anymore shots when they are in the box the whole game? Plus, (more stats for you) A goal is scored every 20min in a 5 on 5 game. However, that stat changes to a goal every 5min when a team is a man down.....big difference!

You can't get consistency at that level when dealing with individual perception, especially with the speed of the game.  My kids play hockey, at even at that turtle pace half of the crowd will call a penalty or offside while the rest think it's ok.  Now increase the speed about 100 times and make them guess again.

I was watching part of the game last night, when Crosby went in on a partial break, didn't get a shot off and complained that he was slashed in the hand.  I actually thought he was faking it to draw a penalty, but rewinding and in slo-mo, sure enough he was slashed.  No call.

There are other events, the Lidstrom non-call for example, that was just a blown call, I'm sure the refs/linesmen would agree after the fact.  It happens.

I'd like to see that Lidstrom non-clal - anyone have a link?

As much as the coach/players can complain (without getting fined) is this article:

Stats?  Ok.

Reg season, avg shots on goal:
Pitt: 32.8 (4th overall)
Ott: 29.7 (18th overall)

5-5 Goals for/against:
Pitt: 1.07 (9th overall)
Ott: 0.88 (26th overall)

Before the game got out of hand, the penalties were 7 for Pit, 8 for Ott.  So Pit has an extra 2 mins man advantage, by your stats that's an extra 0.4 of a goal.  How do you account for the other 2.6 goals?

Its all about when penalties are/arn't called...stats don't show the moments when the teams are just starting to battle back, get a goal, change the momentum of the game, then get a B.S. call against them. The whole game changes at that moment.
Later on, when nothing is happening, the refs will call a "make up" penalty against their favorite team. So, in the end they can justify that the amount of calls where "even".

Speaking to the "yeah, but in my kids peewee games, calls are missed all the time". Yeah, I'm sure they are...but this is the NHL! The best of the best in the reffing profession. Not only that, but this is the playoffs in the NHL. These are the best refs of all the refs in the league. There is no excuse for the pitiful job they are doing right now. Well, there is one excuse....its fixed/rigged

Stats?  Ok.

Reg season, avg shots on goal:
Pitt: 32.8 (4th overall)
Ott: 29.7 (18th overall)

5-5 Goals for/against:
Pitt: 1.07 (9th overall)
Ott: 0.88 (26th overall)

Before the game got out of hand, the penalties were 7 for Pit, 8 for Ott.  So Pit has an extra 2 mins man advantage, by your stats that's an extra 0.4 of a goal.  How do you account for the other 2.6 goals?

You can't look at just the total penalties.   Its the calls and the momentum changing aspect of the calls.   Case in point, the first penalty against Kelly.   It was an after the whistle face-wash kinda roughing penalty.   Sen's had the momentum and this pathetic call stopped the momentum and pens scored.   Now Ottawa is behind and must adapt.   There were so many non-calls / bad-calls going against the Sens, that the Sens have to defend differently.   Watch clips of Foligno trying to skate with the puck, he's hacked, hooked, chooped and no calls.

Its an opinion obviously.   Are the Pens a better team?   Sure, 100% agree.   Does the NHL or referring somehow help ensure the Pens success?   I'm not convinced 100%, but I would say, that beyond a reasonable doubt the NHL influences the outcome.

Ok, so Kelly takes a penalty, they lose momentum.  Four minutes later, they take another penalty and get scored on.  So it that second penalty a direct result of a penalty 6 minutes ago?  Never mind that there is now an intermission, 20 minutes to stop play, does Pit still have momentum?  They must, because they score 3 more goals before the next penalty.

It's the same crap you heard down here when the Leafs (all the way back then) were in the playoffs ... refs out to get us ... crap ... are some officals better than others ... sure ... do they miss calls .. yep ... for both sides ... could there be some bias .. for sure but those on the short end (like the leafs fans) always come up with a reason that they aren't getting a fair shake (and yes I'm a leaf fan but leaf FANS make me ill)

Meh....your missing the point. Everyone in Ottawa/The World knew that the Sens would not get past the Pens in the playoffs. No sour grapes on that one.

Its sour grapes on the poor/suspect calls league wide.

But that has gone on forever ... not just this year ... back in 92/93 ... back in the 80's .. forever that is the point ...

and if you know that the Sens weren't going to win what does it matter ??

If you want to post which refs are decent before a game that is one thing but in hind site and with the natural bias that everyone has of course the big bad refs are out to get you or they are ruining the game. In the playoffs their screwups are highlighted to a much larger extent and because it is win or done that leads to all this conspiracy crapola, I don't think I've heard many if any fans from a winning team go on and on about the hack officals ..

Guilty? Yeah....sounds pretty guilty to me. !

Try the video with the pic of Bettman, in the 2nd bar of videos, called "facing the critics"

Guilty?  No.  Embarrassed?  Yes.

You can have complete confidence in the integrity of the people making the decisions, but also think that they are complete idiots.

I don't have confidence in the integrity of the people making the decisions...I'm not sure they're idiots...they're just slimy businessmen trying to sell a product.

Don't get me wrong, I agree, Bettman is a slimy man, don't care for him at all.  What I meant though was that he can say that he is confident in the integrity of the people.  What he can't say is that he thinks they're idiots for blowing the call.

No, I get it...I'm saying I question the integrity of all of them....Bettman, and the crooked refs that are in his pocket.

OK - How do expalin Ruutu's 2 penalties toonight, or the penalty on Fisher, of the Campolie penalty (where McGee drops his stick)???

Coincidently most were at the start of the period or when Ottawa was turning it on -> momentum changers...

[2nd OT intermission...]

Should be 6-3 for Ottawa by now...

The OT goal should have been good,
and the Pens should have had a tripping penalty on that Sens breakaway.

It's getting harder not to believe this conspiracy theory...

Kick some a** Sens !

You hear Don Cherry trying to bite his tongue on the whole thing! AND the videos from the league showing whats a legal goal....PRICELESS!
CBC is going to get a nasty phone call from Bettman. Hopefully Ron MacLean doesn't lose his job.

Are we letting this thread sleep?

Pitts won for sure, but I would like to see a replay on the Volchenkov penalty early in the 3rd...(that call just seemed weak in a Game 6 game...)

Some weak calls going against Phoenix tonight in game 7 against Detroit...

I guess if you are the chosen team, you just need to ensure you knock the net off, ...

Well, sure some calls didn't go the Sens way, and I'm a die hard Sens fan, but that Pens goal that was refused? That was a good goal, so even if several went the Penguins way, some went Ottawa's way too.  As someone else states lately (on the team 1200 I think), this is an issue more of "incompetence", not a fix.

I would think that if it were fixed we would have seen Phoenix move on... what a great 'feel good' story that would have been for ol' Gary to have.

I agree. Just the diving call against Gionta on Friday was completely laughable. Lapierre's two calls? Debatable. Could go either way. Maybe the refs were a bit harsh but then again, Lapierre is living with the reputation he created and cultivated. But Gionta was nearly flipped over. Jacques Martin's reaction was hilarious. He who NEVER reacts.

He was like "WHAT????.... WHAT????.... CHRIST!!!!". The ref comes along and explains (or at least tries to), and when he leaves, Old Jack is muttering to himself and drops a few F-bombs. I am surprised it is not on Youtube yet...

Caps the better team? No. Better talent? Absolutely. But they are not working as close-knit as the Habs. They seem to play more individually.

It should be a tight game... but the Habs better watch out for the whistle-crazy zebras... They have to stay disciplined.

It's opinion but I think the Caps were the better team even in game six ... Halak was the best player on the ice and won the game but if they give up 50+ shots again I don't think Halak will be able to repeat his performance, I will agree that the Caps have played too individually but a "team" doesn't give up 50+ shots if it is playing well as a team either.

If the Habs go down to a shady call tonight, Downtown is going to get torn up. Habs fans take this stuff very seriously.

And still, the Bell Center will be sold out next year. Add a price increase to that for good measure.

Correction... we DO take it seriously, but the tearing up will be done by a bunch of punks just waiting for an excuse to do damage. And I sincerely hope the same thing happens like the last riot that happened.

Everybody took out their cellphones and filmed the idiots, then sent it all to the cops. They made 133 arrests with that evidence!!!

Retiring soon...

Habs the better team? Since when does one player (Halak) constitute a better team? I want the Habs to win, I'd love to see an all canadian final but jeez, if it wasn't for Halak, and in reverse, if it wasn't for the Caps soso goalies, this series would already be "game over man".   I respect Habs deserve to win, but their performance in this series shows they kept pace, but hardly shows they've been a better team, just that, especially in one game, they have the most important player on the ice.

I used to drink the Habs kool-aid, I remember along with my dad crying foul on every trip that wasn't called against my beloved habs, along with all the fans at the old forum yelling "boooooooooooo" after every trip.  It's a perspective thing and an incompetence thing.  Refs have always favoured "the stars", so Lafleur certainly got a lot of breaks, as did Lemaire and compagnie, as did Gretzky, Lemieux, Denis Savard, Hawerchuk, etc.  It's just the way it goes and it's the same in baseball, where the good pitchers get the pitch on the corner every time, the good batter will get the same pitch by a rookie called a ball.  Everynow and then, you get the incompetent call a la fisher the other night but c'est la vie.  As an Ottawa fan, I can't say I've forgotten the Alfie-Tucker hit that wasn't called (and led to a goal); I know my maple leaf fans coworkers never let me forget it.

I agree. The Caps are the better team...but as we saw last game, the Habs/Halak can pull off a victory.

All I'm saying is that the "fixed" reffing will ensure that the Caps will win. If it means the entire 3rd period is 5on3 for the Caps, so be it! The Caps will not lose this game, and the Refs will make sure of this......if they have to.

What ja mean hippo?  Bettman will surely prevent the habs from winning.  eheh he's already started, their schedule is horrible.  They play Friday, then Sunday AFTERNOON!  yuck, maybe there's a point to all this talk of "fix".

What a performance by Halak, and what a correct call by the Ref, though I've seen worse non-calls in these playoffs.  If I was Washington, I'd be wondering if the fix was in against them, but it was the correct call.

Nope.....I think the growing public skepticism around the NHL's integrity has prompted Gary to relax his fixing/rigging.......for now

Oh I'm fairly certain if they had scored on that penalty call with less than 2 minutes left we would have heard about the big fix ... but at  one for 33 the Caps powerplay sucked royally.

Well, McCreary is reffing the Pens/Habs game tonight....now he's a known Pens man...lets see what happens

This Conspiracy Theorist is a pretty good gig... you can't lose.  If the Better team wins, you say Fix and if the Worse team wins, you say Overcoming Adversity.  I have to say, if the NHL is fixed, they're doing a pretty crappy job of it.

Or you're doing a crappy job calling the fix.
