There's a Dr Who on Kijiji asking $1,500.00 OBO which sounded OK. The guy says the machine works well, just a few chunks out of cabinet. Located in Scarborough... Also said had someone coming tonight who offered him $1750, so I backed off for now as he is getting out of typical selling range in my opinion for condition.

I saw a detached WMS head (from back) and a soldering iron in one pic so I asked if he was a collector and on any web forums and he didnt reply.

Anyone know this guy?  It his price high as I suspect? I am familiar with how people sell and bump a price, so was curious if he was for real, either way for $1750 I would let it go...but if he gets it more power to him I guess...said he'd keep me in the loop if it falls through...HMMMM

Anyone know the book price of a Dr. Who?  And, does anyone know roughly what they are actually selling for around here?

This may help the author out.

Well one thing I do know is looking at the pictures from the Ad....

Those arn't pictures of the machine you will end up with.  The pictures are in 3 diffrent locations, one with a fish tales beside it, one in front of a garage door and one with no pin beside it.

$1500 for a Dr. Who and the machine better be in nice shape.  I like the game but it doesn't command a high price, when I sold mine I sold it for I think around $1300.

Approach this with caution, no real pictures and they guy is already trying to jack up the price, seems fishy to me.

Did you notice that there are two, maybe three, different machines posted? In an unfinished basement and a finished basement. Look at the left side of the cabinet - faded and then no fade! Magic???

Also the backbox image is from a.stebel's ad here: http://archive.maaca.org/s107351202.onlinehome.us/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?m-1235836966/

Hmmm. Something just ain't right ...

According to the postal code, this guy lives around the corner from me. It's walking distance.

I'd be happy to have a peek at the machine if someone wants me to.

Pics definitely not his (wouldn't be the first time, some people are just lazy), but seems to be an honest written assessment of the machine.  I think above $1500 is likely too much and your best bet is just to show interest, play it cool and let him get back to you to come take a look if he is interested in accepting your offer.

I didnt make an offer and wont unless he calls me and I see it first. Not looking to burn him or visa versa. As most of the members here will agree, if you know you wont be keeping the machine forever its best not to overpay so you can sell/trade without losing a pile of cash. Duh, why did I need to say that? Must be my inner pinhead reminding me not to get to impulsive.

I heard back from him and he's claiming an offer of 1750, but the buyer can't get there until Saturday.

"I have an offer already for 1750, but he can't come until Saturday, so If you want it for 1750 you can have it today.  There are four others who want this machine, I was not expecting this kind of interest, so it is up to you, but if you can bring a friend today, with 1750 cash, it's yours.    Please let me know soon, "

Told him that I was interested in dropping by and asked for his address.

I'm not familiar with this machine. Besides the usual aesthetic and mechanical stuff, is there anything special that I should be looking at?

Was the seller by any chance looking for an RFM or GNR?

Make sure the Time expander is working and in good shape as that thing can be a pain to fix and almost impossible to replace.

$1750 is an insane price for a Dr. Who, the person offering $1750 must either be a huge Dr. Who fan or not exist.

The weakest part of this machine is the mini-playfield. There is a good diagnostic test accessible from the coin door switches. Also take a close look at the condition of all the mini-playfield parts which really get hammered. It's common to see the wood completely trashed both on the front of the mini-playfield and on the main playfield surrounding it.

My guess is they dont exist and whomever is just trying...in vain, I may add...to get more money. $1200 seems about right unless its immaculate.

Jeez... that cheap? Man, at that price, I want one... is it really that bad? I played Dirty Harry and I found it very ordinary. Popeye was merely OK for me. Another one that gets no love is Congo, but I find it quite good...

Is it the British aspect of the pin that turns away North Americans? Considering that the only channel you could watch Dr.Who on was PBS...

For your average beat up Dr. Who with a faded cab and a some wear on the min playfield, yea $1200 sounds about right.

The guy told me his buyer was coming at 5 pm today...I sense the faint aroma of RAT. Trying to get as much as he can (understandably) and possibly using this phantom buyer to create urgency. S#%T, I've been thru this too many times lately, since I started wanting DMD machines. He also didnt respond to any of my friendly questions, just ignored and stuck to selling it.

Kudos to selling in the classic sense, if it works, but I now get a feeling he's never heard of MAACA and has no idea many pin buyers are networked.

Anyway, if he does get $1750 hes doing very well and I would congratulate him. Anyone have a decent Dr Who for around $1350. ?

Might have to settle for Dr Pepper or possibly even Dr Ruth. Worst case scenario, Dr Phil.  Haaha

Warren:

There is no need getting worked up about an overpriced pin, especially a Dr. Who. There are many better playing pins, patience my friend.

My two cents: Pins that are for sale are like street cars; There there will always be another.

Book value is $1375.00 or $1450.00 with moving dalek option.
For that kind of money it's a great pin if you like the theme.

I just got off the phone with the kijiji seller.

He was able to sell the game tonight for 1750.

I did not get a chance to see it, so I have no idea about it's condition.

I emailed back and forth with the seller at around 730 tonight and he hadnt sold it yet but was expecting 2 people to drop by. Said he bought it for $1300, after I told him I was pretty sure who he bought it from. I didnt mention the MAACA asking price without any fixes was $1000.00 Said he had since fixed the metal ridge on the mini playfield and the bumper Daleks (whatever they are). I think a.stebel also swapped out the degassed DMD.

Said he needed to sell as fiance was pissed he lost $ on the stock market.  Maybe he needs a new fiance because its kinda hard not to be down on your stocks these days. Guess the guy who paid $1750 bought in after the stocks bottomed out!

Anyway just played on Vpinball and it seems like a boring theme unless you are a Brit who grew up on the show. By the way Dr Who seemed like a really dry tv show, like a British Space 1999  if anyone remembers that stinker from the 70's. Stargate is another one I never heard people comparing favourite episodes of.  The sounds and stuff on the game sounded kinda dull. One main toy on the pf, the elevating mini pf, dead in the middle.
Glad its gone because this would have been one flipper game to flip quickly by my estimation.

Dr. Who is a fun game, I liked the show theme and music, and the game has some strategy to playing it.  Never trust VpinMame to evaluate a pinball without trying it live.  Some of the emulations are worse than live, and some actually play BETTER than in real life.

I have to chirp in here and say that I love the music from the show, almost sci-fi techno. Sure the sets were limited but many British shows are like that. It is more about the story instead of the action. As for the pinball machine, I have never played it but if it has some of the music from the show, I would give it a try just for that.

Ricker's current lineup;

El Dorado          Flash.                   Royal Flush           Joker Poker

Meteor             Xenon

It plays the original theme and captures it.  I beleive the Sound Lab at the BBS was the forerunner of electronic music / sound effects and their work (particularly shows like Dr. Who and other Sci Fi) was the basis of the electronic keyboards that came out of that era. (I could be wrong but I swear I read that somewhere.)

The seller said the guy who bought it has a real nostalgic love for Dr Who the TV show and most likely it was a long term keeper for him. Honestly, I always thought it was one of those shows they played on TVO that nobody watched and that is why it was on a not for profit channel.

Now, if they had a Dave Allen At Large pinball I definitely would be a taker. That guy smoked a carton every episode. Maybe he was just anxious about his missing finger! Anyone here remember that show.? What about a Benny Hill machine with the old man chasing the young girl loop award? Better text Gary Stern in the morning.

PS- I thought Moog was one of the,  if not the originator of the sound synthesizer. That would be if you excluded the Theramin of course, which was invented by a Russian in the 20's or 30's if I remember correctly.
