1) the playfield is finished with a one layer clearcoat (as original): 650 US$ 2) the playfield is finished with a six layer automotive clearcoat (mirrorlike): 750 US$ 3) the playfield is finished with a six layer automotive clearcoat (mirrorlike) and has an additional very hard scratch reducing ceramic clearcoat as top layer (it will not splitter): 800 US$
Not sure I agree with this pricing structure .... There should be the production playfields and seconds ... that's it.
If one layer clear was what they put in at the wms factory than for HUO you would probably never eat through the clear so it should be good enough.
Now if you go for six shots (100 bucks more) than for sure nothing is going through that one. Unless you drop a screwdriver on it or something.
But wait there is more ... for just 50 dollars more you will get the super duper scratch resistant clear shot on top ...
Seems like a bit of a gouge to me. I don't own an AFM so I wouldn't buy the PF in the first place. But I think I would have preferred a one price one product model. Besides how can you actually tell you got 7 layers of clear sprayed on your PF?
I think the repro PF's are great and obviously needed in the hobby. But they need to come down in price IMHO. I would ideally like to see them going for no more than $500.00 Cdn after shipping and taxes. - 2 cents
I understand your reasoning but the six layer clearcoat gives the playfield an entirely different look. It will also play differently. The clearcoat isnt for protection, its for a different look and feel.
Some people like it. Some dont. The CV I recently acquired from tako has such a clear coat (bill davis) and I have to say it looks gorgeous. I love it. There is a bit less friction as well so the ball floats around the pf as if you just waxed it.
I would pay the extra $100 for that mirror shine. But I am a shallow s.o.b.

I personally find the pricing options very interesting. I mean, I don't really like a clear coated PF (and for Home Use Only, it is an overkill - like you said). Hence that first option seems good enough. But if one is worried about really overplaying their Pinball machine and they hardly ever want to bother cleaning/waxing it, then option 3 is something to consider....
Stop thinking/hoping that Pinball machine and parts prices will go down to low prices like $500 CDN for PF. Since we are not talking consumer electronics here (mass production like DVD, XBoxes and soon to be HD-DVD, Blue-Ray, etc.), the prices will probably have no reason/incentive to ever be lower. With this, there are now like 3 companies making PF reproductions and since this last one thinks they have a better product (or is aiming at newer Williams/Bally titles), they will ask for this much higher price (they will stick with A-List type of titles and hence those command more money and hence buyers have deeper pockets to buy higher priced reproductions)....
PS, I can't tell if there are exactly 7 coats of clear but I could tell that there are many coats of clear versus just 1 or 2....

Agree 100% with Mani. If you have ever seen a BD cleared playfield you will agree it's worth the $100. It simply looks amazing! Better than brand new. I agree it is probably overkill, but that is the option I am considering if I get the playfield.
I saw a fully restored AFM at the first Toronto Pinball show and I was blown away by how amazing it looked. It looked way better than any pinball I had seen previous (and I had seen HUO at the time). I asked the owner and he said he had the playfield done by BD. Since then I have wanted a game like that Yes, I am as shallow as Mani but there is something about playing a truely mint machine.
Also, agree w/ 80's fan. Your pricing expectations are unrealistic. I wish prices would come down, but I know that isn't going to happen. It all comes down to supply and demand. The repro firms are only producing so much product to guarantee a certain price. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the playfields sell for significantly more (via eBay) once the run is done. This has happened with the Fathom and TAF repro playfields.

I'm also a sucker for a nice clear coat .. I'm actually getting duplicate PF's for both my TSPP and LOTR and will get them CC'd.
Not only does a CC'd PF look awesome (...it REALLY does shine...), but in the case of the Stern's, unfortuantely the craftmanship isn't quite as good as older WMS, and even a HUO game will get PF wear. My LOTR with only about 1000 plays, is showing very very mild signs of insert wear .
Now if only I had skill and experience to do a PF swap....
Agree with all of the statements mentioned above. And I would personally go for the multi layer PF myself (750). But my position was that they should only sell one version of it. If its going to be the 7 layer one for 800 fine .. then that's it. About post ebay re-sales I can see people passing the one layer PF as the Uber 7 one and screwing the buyer.
For the price 500 dollars may be unrealistic. But its what I would want to pay. And I did put in the caveat "Ideally" Other people are obviously willing to pay more. Thats why there is a market for things like Lamborghini, etc. But in a hobby that is struggling in the parts market. I see it as an unfortunate move to out price things and create tier collectors.
Most collectors (including a small time Pinball collector like myself), can super easily tell if a PF has a Clear Coating ala Bill Davis (many coats) or just the regular 1 coat factory finish. It is only that last scratch resistance though coat that we probably wouldn't easily be able to see. But I am pretty sure that the maker of this (Mirco) is not dumb and he will have some marking the PF (or stamp on bottom or cross section) to designate which type it is....
