I'm hoping to start the project over the next week. The first thing I want to do is bring the cabinet back to its original colours. What colour white should I use? I picked up an electric paint sprayer for another project so I'll be picking up a quart of white. Attached are two pics of the game as it sits & a pic of the correct paint scheme.
Oh, and if anyone has an idea what to paint to use for the green & red I'm all ears.
After having just put a couple coats of pure white on a cab this weekend, I can attest that sprayers are tricky. I have an HLVP unit, easy to use, however the trick is to get the right consistency of the paint to avoid the splatter. I had to cut the paint quite aggressively with thinner and water to get a good flow. It might take awhile to get the right mixture, but I just practiced on the inside of the cabinet until it produced a good steady flow.
Dismantled, sanded, primed & painted a bit over the past few days. The original cab had some silver specks all over it. I reproduced these by putting a screen-like material over the paint can nozzle and gently tapping the nozzle. Still need to do the red & green sections.
Finished most of the painting today. I figured since most of the lines are straight I'd use painters instead of making a stencil. It was time consuming taping both sides, if I made a stencil it would have saved time. Also, there was some paint bleed so I'll need to touch up some areas. Next time I'll make a stencil.

The next tasks for this machine will be trying to strip the laquer or whatever yellowed coating is on the playfield, plus trying to find an elusive backglass.
Ya I just did a 1956 Gladiator for a guy that was covered in some kind of crap.I ended up sanding off what I could with 400 grit and then I cleared it and it turned out not too bad.

Wow, that looks great. Glad it went to someone that has the ambition to restore it. Good luck stripping that thick coating of what ever it is someone put on the playfield.

Great job on this cabinet I never try to remove laquer but i will make some test. I think it is a very long process because try to remove the lacquer and not the playfield art need a precise use of solvent lacquer. Maybe it is a q-tips job like the artist paint restoration project.

400 grit you say, hmm, I might need to try that. I saw the pics of the Gladiator, it turned out great.
Silver, thanks for the game! I'm happy you weren't one of those guys that would've stripped the machine & sold the parts on ebay.
Yeah HAL, this will probably be time consuming as not to damage the original paint. I have to try, white sections just look way too yellow.
