There is a commerical running on the radio in Toronto (for some family tire store) that implies that might be a shortage of snow tires this year in Toronto/Ontario because of the demand from Quebec (where the commerical states snow tires are now mandatory)
Is this for real or just a big hoax ?

Not sure about the shortage but they are definitely mandatory here now.
Anyway, i cant believe people were still driving in the winter with all-seasons tires..
Currently owning: - Solar Fire, Medusa, Flash Gordon, (Centaur), No Fear ------------------
The question I have is if I'll get a ticket for driving in Quebec without snow tires, even if my car is registered in Ontario.

You ever drive to Montreal in the winter? I wouldn't be worried about the ticket. I'd be worried about making it home.
Seriously, don't cheap out on snow tires. In Toronto, they can get away w/o snow tires -- the smog stops any real snow from falling In Ottawa, we get alot of the damn white stuff. Anyone driving without snow tires in Ottawa is asking for trouble.

The industry always said, they lacked the capacity to manufacture and sell the 1 million tires that quebecers alone are missing and needed to make the province compliant..
my dealer told me that if i didn't order back in june, we'd be screwed.. it's shaping up to be true.
also note, i can't find the link but last year german scientists developed a tire thickness gun... that the police aim at your tires on a moving vehicule (up to 75 miles per hour -- the slow lane on the autobahn),
the gun can determine tire thichnkess and the depths of the groves to determine baldness/safety...
the police here are bound to purchase the technology so in a year or two, it will be *real* easy to enforce.
i would just execute people on the spot for using crappy tires in winter time but i haven't been elected benevolant dictator yet
I know a few SQ police officers that all said the same thing. They don't have the resources to enforce such a law. The only time it will be applied is when someone is involved in an accident... they will check the tires then. I tried getting winter tires for my van and couldn't until December. f*** it. My Volvo has winter tires already.
The cops told me it was just another half-assed political decision to get more money out of people's pockets. And it is funny on how the price of winter tires went WAY up this fall...

Thats why I buy studded winter tires for snow and mud Love quebec where studded is legal. On another note if you have a new car remove stock tires ASAP i learned my lesson
Not sure but you'll certainly end in the ditch, ask Ethous
Life is like Pinball!! You never know where you will bounce or where your going but sometimes you have that one amazing shot But on the other hand you have those darn gutter ball where you just get frustrated.
Studded tires are NOT needed in Quebec...unless you live in Chibougameau...or you cross a river/lake to go home....and I would suggest a ski-doo if that's the case!
The only thing studs do is destroy the asphalt and give you longer braking distance if you're not on pure ice...and even then!
BTW, while an non-winter tire Ontario-plated car can drive in Quebec without getting fines, a studded tire Quebec-plated car cannot...studded tires are not allowed in Ontario, no matter where the car is plated.
However, like Sparky said, the OPP don't have time to inspect for studded tires thus not many people get caught.

The reason I use studded I am in the country allot in the winter past Gracefield or Fournier , Chrysler , Eganville. Cottage is there and hunting season I really need studded for the mud I go through. Also do allot of ice fishing. If my car would have been 4x4 would be better but could not see the extra cost of gas and maintenance. So for me I do need it. If it was once in a blue I would not. But for me I am out hunting every weekend and have 2 weeks in November off and 2 weeks in December off for hunting. The roads I drive are not cleared of snow or very muddy so every little bit helps.
