Haven't had one yet that wasn't repairable although some can cook to that point..  Is it that bad?

No not too bad, just figured I would see if someone had a used local one they would be willing to part with for a few bucks rather then trying to find the parts needed to fix mine.  From what I can tell thus far, the hour hand optos are out.
