I have a data east Hook pinball machine and the right flipper with not stay powered on (or in the hold position) it will fire once and fall back down. Could the diode on that coil be bad, or should I look elsewhere? Any ideas?

From Marvins site:

f the Flipper Works, but...

Flipper goes up, but won't stay up. On solid state flipper games, check the hold fuses on the flipper board. On solid state flipper games Robocop and Phantom of the Opera, check resistors R16 and R32 on the flipper board; these should be 100 ohm 1/4 watt resistors. Also check resistors R7 and R23; these should be 1000 ohm 1/4 watt resistors.
Flipper goes up, but won't stay up. On solidstate flippers, clean the cabinet flipper switches with a rag and alcohol. Also clean the EOS switches (if the game has them) in the same manner.
Flipper goes up, but won't stay up. Check the wiring harness. The 9 volts AC hold voltage comes off the power supply at CN1 pins 11,10 (square plug) and go to the flipper board at CN2 pins 6,7 (respectively). Along the way there is a 2 pin connector inside the wiring harness. This can become disconnected if the head was recently lowered.
Flipper works for a few minutes, then don't work at all. Check the flipper enable relay RY1 on the CPU board. Cold solder joints on this relay, or bad relay switch contacts can cause this problem.

Thanks Ancient games:
I also went to this site and tried all of the above. I unsoldered both flipper coils and used jumper wires from the left flipper to the right flipper and it held up just fine. I think I have a flipper board problem. I checked the fuses and holders and don't see any problems. I'm in the process of checking the resistors. Will keep you posed. Any other ideas?

I tested all of the resistors and the transistors, both the TO 220s and the larger TO 218s and even checked the TO 92s. All seem to be fine. I also checked to see if there was the five volt power to the two cpu chips (U1 and U2) and there is. So all in all the flipper board seems to be fine. Any ideas on where to look next. CN19 (Spec coil drives flipper ground) or CN20 (Flipper 3,4 ground)?

That game only had one coil winding, thus no need for an EOS.  The fuse holders crack and or break off, Data East used really cheap parts and they broke if they were even touched.
