Ok so I'm about to start my cabinet repair on my Addams.

I don't plan in takin the side rails off, going to mask off all the art and then just use a black spray paint to redo the black.

But I have a few questions, is there anything I should be doing to prep the cabinet?

I plan to use some bondo to fill up some gouges and holes and what not, after I sand them down is there anything special I have to do to get them ready to paint?

What grit of sandpaper should I use for the bondo?

Any other tips would be much appreciated.

Hey Adam,

I'm sure there are lots of different ways to get this done, and I am no expert.  In your case where you'll be fixing gouges and sanding on top of a decal, you should probably keep your sanding to a minimum, and keep the grit finer than you would if you were working directly on wood.  (you might end up burning the decal)

The only thing you really need to make sure of is that the surface is clean after you sand (use a tack cloth or the like), and you might want to consider priming the area you've bondo'd.  Otherwise you'll probably notice the patch through the black paint.

Beyond that, just take it slow.

Indeed, everything menace said, fine grits are slow and produce the best results....and...

I forget what Bondo's drying time constant is...something like "let dry 24hrs for every 1/8" layer of Bondo"  ect...Anyway, whatever it is, let it dry double the time, or triple even, you don't want to start sanding and find out that the layers underneath aren't "bone" dry.

This is slow, but worth it I've found, and as a personal preference, if you want to win back the time you spent waiting?.. go to Rona instead of Home Depot, maybe it's just me, but I find HD has done away with their customer service.

Hope that helps
Craig
