Being a musician and event organizer for nomad gallery, I have The ability to obtain a special event liquor licence and book fairly roomy halls. So I'm thinking.........
With enough interest, I would love to put on a pinball tournament in Ottawa. This would only succeed if enough of you would like to bring your machines and if you like, parts/gameroom pieces etc. You can bring in games to play/sell/trade and of course, compete.
So this is the preliminary thread for feeling out what everyone thinks about the idea and can make suggestions/offer help of what have you. I think vengence and company did a great job in Toronto, and I think we can make this work in Ottawa.

I'd bring some games for free play and maybe even for sale possibly but timing would be everything. I think a small show to start may work but you need the local collectors behind you to bring machines. For the TO show, it amazed me how few TO collectors brought machines to the show for free play. I understand the whole free time needed, transport needed etc but bottom line is no show will succeed without the machines being brought in by the locals.
No offense intended but the biggest reason I heard from other collectors about not bringing a game to the TO show and other shows is they don't want it played to death. Alot of people seem to forget these games (except for a few NIB and HUO Sterns) survived years in bars with a bunch of drunk guys playing them with beers in their hands. I took two games to the to show and they were treated better by Joe Public than some of the members I've had to my house . I pamper and upgrade and restore my machines considerably but I still want them to be played and enjoyed by all ages. I frequently have my son's friends over to play the games and if something breaks, you just fix it after
Anyways, I'll get off my soapbox now but if you can organize this, as long as my work schedule can work around the show, I'll bring in 5 or 10 games.
Come on Ottawa collectors, get those games out of the gameroom and support a local show!
ME
PS Not sure of the politics and cross province border issues, but approach Montreal Starburst to see if they would come. They are closer than TO and I'm sure would enjoy the exposure to Ottawa buyers.
I think this is a good idea, and might work (...heck I might even bring a game ), but I think the problem for many is transportation.
I don't know how feasible it would be, but having a cube van with a lift gate available for "pick-ups" and "drop-offs" might help people get their games out of the house.
I know that for me, prepping a game for transport, loading it up in the car, etc (...twice ! ) is a bit of a buzzkill...
Anything to make that process less tedious, would help...
Depending on the time and the place, I would consider bringing a game. If anyone has spare space in their van to help with transport that would be appreciated.
Great! I was talking with the guy I usually do shows with, and he seemed to think it was a great idea. I was thinking first weekend in November, so that there's plenty of time to prepare, as well as beating the snow(fingers crossed)
so far, were thinking of booking club saw at Ottawa university, due to the dual hall concept. I'd like to have all the machines set up in the front hall, and then have some tables for sales on the other side of the bar. I'm planning it to start at noon Saturday (set up around 8.) til midnight as I'm hoping to draw in the younger crowd with a local band or 2 at the end of the night. And then arrange pick-up the next morning.
A reminder that this is still early in the planning and can and will likely change a bit here and there. Thanks everyone. Josh

Still up in the air right now. I'm thinking a cut of the door and the purse from the tournament entry fee ($5?) along with a prize pack from Canada pinball parts or something? I should change the thread to Ottawa pinball show as I believe the tourney is a secondary thing. I'm more or less hoping to shine a spotlight on the hobby for the general public.
I'm thinking for anyone who wants to help out, maybe meet up at conners and have a planning session over a few pints and some ironman. I also need to get ahold of geoff and see if he's willing to participate.

You also need to talk to Adam (Vengeance). He ran the Toronto Gameroom show (at least the tourney portion) so his advice would be extremely valuable. Plus, he had some great tourney software that showed the current rankings on a projector.

I think with anything this big you need to set a date and then have people sign up. It is a good idea; let people plan around it and not plan the event around if I am available. Looking forward to the event.
Current Lineup: Black Knight, Riverboat Gambler, Ripley's Believe it or Not, Flintstones, Orbitor 1, Wipe Out, Breakshot, The Simpsons Pinball Party, Fish Tales, Eight Ball and a 60 in 1 Cocktail.

I have a meeting with the gallery director of sales this week and I'll set the date and measure the area. It will be smaller than the T.O. show, but I'm not planning on the auction or starburst or anything. This is the first show of it's kind in ottawa and should be done small scale. I don't want to end up in the hole a few grand and kill it in it's first year. I think keeping the vendors local (Canada pinball parts, workingpins, howison?) will suffice.
If people can Pm me the machines they would offer, I can start a list and determine the layout and the tourney machines. And yes, I will absolutly ask vengence some pointers on running a smooth, fair competition.

Agreed. This is an important consideration. Have you chatted with these folks to get a feeler if they are interested? If not, it would be a good idea to start discussion with them and have an idea of advertising costs.

I was merely listing local vendors that have the oportunity to participate if they so choose, I sent geoff an email today and will be in touch with Jean-Marc soon. This Thread is indeed an interest check, and my course of action will be determined from the response I get here, and from the venue coordinator.
From where I stand, I see this as a weekend of fun, and if I break even, I'll do it anually. If I don't have support from the local vendors, fine. More room to play. That's what this is about PLAYING PINBALL in a social setting and having a laugh.

I met with the gentleman who books for the gallery yesterday, and apparently the curator of the place is a pin head and wants to do whatever he can to make this show happen. I'm not sure just yet what extent he wants to be involved, but he was getting at either sponsering the venue/advertising/prizes etc. So as long as there's enough machines, it's a go!
I'll bring in my 3 pins, a few of you had already offered a few, however, I'd like it if medvet didn't have to bring in the 5-10 she said she could. That's just too much for one person to deal with. Also, I have a discount at enterprise rentals, so I'm thinking of renting a big ol' cube van the day before to round up whoever would like to bring something and needs help.
So it looks good as of now, but I need help. This will only succeed as a community event thanks.

Getting transportation and moving help arranged for something like this is a good idea. It's much easier to move games out of someone's house if you have more than two people to do it, and getting a truck (or even just a few people with vans) makes things easier to set up and tear down afterwards. I think that if the Toronto show runs again, planning a couple of truck routes out to get games picked up ahead of time (and moved back afterwards) would be a real help.

I can bring 1 or 2 games, too - somehow. Our family starts getting busy with kids commitments around this time - but I can surely lug a machine there & back and trust someone to look over it if I'm not around.
I'll be there if there is a Tournament of some kind with WPR points and cash prize payouts.
I'm looking at buying a truck right now, which if I do I might bring a game with me as well.
Hey Adam,
the prize will be the tournament entry purse and I'm looking into sponsers right now. It won't be a big tourney so if you're planning on winning $1000 or a new machine, it won't be what your used to. We're billing it as an art show so we get support from the university and get a liquor licence. It's more about fun this year, and if successful, bigger and better next year. I'm sure you know how it goes. P.s. WPR points?

No it won't.
That's illegal in Ontario, you have to have set prize pools, they are not allowed to fluctuate based on money taken in, it's considered gambling at that point.
It's why the Canadian Championship has set prize pools and why the Toronto Championship had set prize pools.
Not saying you are going to get caught if you do it that way, but do you really want to deal with the consequences if you do? I know I sure didn't.

So fix it low for the first year as you are assuming a low profile and then you can guage interest. Keep the entry fees low as well and then you won't get taken to the cleaners and no one can claim your in it to make money (and I am definitely not implying that anyone runs a tournament to make money as I know that most if not all lose money so no dig is intended). You won't get people travelling for the tourney but I think that would be okay as this is the first year and you need to figure your audience out.

I have a meeting with the university curator next week and we'll discuss sponsers for the prizes. It may have to be a few hundred bucks and whatever gets donated. We'll see, it's still early. I'll definatly contribute personally to the prize and I'm thinking of getting a trophy done up. But please remember, this is first and formost a pinball show, it's purpose (being on campus) Is to draw a crowd of non-collectors and put the spotlight on pinball for the younger group. The tourny is the icing on the cake for the die-hards and a social event for the local maaca community.

Well as long as there are some WPR points I'll be there. You can work on getting them your self if you like just got to http://www.pinballrankings.com and talk to Josh about getting sanctioned. Really the only requirement is that the tournament is open and not restricted.

Are the rules for tournaments different if you're part of a club or league? Can you get around this by saying that it's an "Ottawa pinball league" tournament, and sell memberships at the door (membership being your entry fee)? Just wondering what the letter of the law is. I hate to see tournament organizers lose money if they don't have to.
Either way, having a bunch of machines up for free play is really the main draw. The more different games you can get there, the better. One of the best things about the Toronto show was getting to play a bunch of games that I hadn't seen before, or don't get to play very often.

Peter Davis of Starburst was the one who told me about the law. He said he was around when it got put into place. When I ran my tournament I tried to look into the actual law but it's such a windy road of misinformation and point fingers it was almost impossible. I got as far as basically being sent to the ATF equivalent here in Canada where I read that I would also need to pay for a permit to run the tournament so I stopped my search after that.
You would really need a lawyer to figure out the actual letter of the law but I heard the law is the same in Illinois from the Sharpe brothers so at least I know Peter isn't pulling the law out of no where, I took that as enough confirmation to comply with the law. I figured missing a permit if I got caught for that, probably a fine of some kind, but getting busted on a gambling offense for a pinball tournament no thanks, I like my criminal record clean.

I'd be more than happy to provide winners prizes as well as draw prizes. I'm not sure how many divisions, etc..there would be, but lets say if there is a beg/int./and expert division, and each winner received shoes/technical tee/sock pack/water bottle? Value would be around $220 per prize, and then I could provide smaller prizes for 2nd( say $75 value) and 3rd ( $40 value), and then random draw prizes?? I know not everyone here is a runner, but I sell lots of walking and x-training shoes as well that pretty much everyone could use. And everybody needs socks, and everyone drinks water( or whatever else they may want in their water bottle!).

I don't see why not. How many people are we expecting?
Before the advertising campaign, whoever on maaca that's coming, and about 40-50 friends and associates. After newspaper/radio/flyering...... Who knows? Probably alot more. It's right downtown on U of O campus. I assume throughout the day, over 100

I don't want to seem like a Nervous Nellie, but I wouldn't want people to under-estimate the amount of effort and planning needed for this venue.
The logistics of getting people to commit games and then getting them to the show is a huge task in itself.
You really need to keep a running list of games and who is bringing them. Maybe you can have a thread with a single post you can update everytime someone commits a game to the show. (...that way we can see all the machines in one post instead of jumping through 50 posts )
I'm thinking of volunteering my Joust pin (...but I'm afraid it might get ALOT of play and/or abuse... )
Then the various other challenges :
- running a tournament - setting-up vendor booths and displays - organizing a swap area (if needed ) - having on-site volunteers and runners to look after the games.
I also had a few questions like:
- would there be vids as well, if people wanted to bring some, or is it pins only ?
- I see this as a great opportunity for a big swap and trade show for many MAACA members. I have a PILE of stuff I'd like to get rid of (..for almost nothing...) and folks could save a ton on shipping... We should co-ordinate who would bring what. Maybe have a thread with a list of stuff people would be bringing
I guess there a meeting to plan for some of this...

Absolutely. The, your door right to the showroom floor, plan has to be well thought out and documented to get folks willing to chance moving their prized possesions in for a show. Failure to organize and post a process will result in people withholding the good stuff.
Hey Steph what's in that pile of stuff? Your junk seems more interesting than my junk, since I know what's in my junk.
some valid concerns! I am however well aware of all of them. The games list thread is a good idea and I will start it once people let me know the exact games they wanna bring. Due to space restictions, the possibility of a "big" trade and swap show is limited. I suggest knowing in advance what you want to trade with people etc. The Toronto show was out at the airport and was a huge venue. This event is downtown and I'm more focused on the free play and tournament area. Vendors will be limited to official sponsors unfortunatly. In the next few meetings, we will be discussing mass transport for the day before and after the show. Like I said, I will keep everyone posted on new info thanks Josh

I would bring one of my games, however, anyone who helped me get my games gown in my basement knows how hard it was...I do not want to go thru that again.

There are 2 parking lots available that I'm trying to have designated for the show specifically. I'll have more info when I sit with the manager tomorrow or Friday.
