Should I just give up and add an extra 'h' to my name? Everyone else seems to do it, everyone. It's sort of a fact of life for me, a burden I must bear.

For the record, my name is spelled "jonny_eh", not "johnny_eh".

If you search the forum for "johnny", you get more hits for my name being misspelled than for the pinball machine Johnny Mnemonic.

Yes, my full name is Jonathan, usually shortened to Jon.

The name John has very different roots, and is by all accounts a different name.

Ha!  That's funny, my middle name is John, and for a while that's what I kind of went by, and I got pissed when people spell Jon.    So the universe is balanced....

Also has allot to do with the fact that every Jonny I've ever known has always spelled their name Johnny.  If your username was jon_eh I don't think anyone would be adding the extra h.

People mistake me for "Brook" or "Rock" all the time, doesn't bother me (pretty funny names though).

Your problem is a simple spelling issue.. Like "Shaun", or "Sean", or "Shawn".  Blame your parents.  

Just be thankful your name isn't "Richard"  

If that`s the only thing troubling you, life is pretty good. Change your nick to something other than your name. Problem solved.

Heard a while back there is an attorney in the US whose name is private Smoker. Doesnt even bother using the name Richard.  At least he knows who he is.

If your name is Jonathan why not go for Jonathan or go for something like "Q" hard to spell wrong.  Although some people would find a way

Exactly what i was thinking . It ' s the "NY" that makes it confusing . Never realised it was "Jonny" . My brains always saw "Johnny"

As a person who's name largely relies on the "H"
(... otherwise I'd only be mere "step"  ),
I think the "H" in "John" is a blatant abuse of consonants !

(... don't get me started on "Knife", "Pneumatic" and "Gnat" )

So I say keep it simple and forget the "H"

You wouldn't think it'd be difficult to spell but I constantly get butchered pronunciations & spelling mistakes.... I guess people panic when they read what looks like 'good private' and figure it must be a misprint so they make their best guess correction.
Just off the top of my head I can name a dozen misspellings I've had to endure.
