Hey guys,

Great site. My name is Ian and I used to run the Ottawa Arcade Collectors Club way back when. I've built a MAME machine, but it just didn't hit the spot that pinball does. Back in highschool, I wasted major bucks on Attack from Mars, Diner and Star Trek TNG.

My question for you is basic... and really hard at the same time

Where should I start?

I want to get a machine, but I also want to get my hands dirty. I have some skill with painting fine details (another hobby of mine), so I am very curious about redoing play fields...

I guess I have alot of questions... and room for about 2 machines

Look forward to your replys!

Ian

Greetings Ian,

My advice to you would be to start smaller... like an electro-mechanical or early solid-state pinball. These pins are easier to work on and great to learn basics on, and parts are usually available. Also, most are inexpensive. You can get a project pin for under 500$ easy. There are always some for sale here. In fact, I know of one... MrMikeman in gatineau has a Six Million Dollar Man that need some minor work... a very good candidate to practice, all the while using the repair guides at http://www.marvin3m.com/fix .

I was sort of thinking EM to start. Art wise, I love early 80s machines. Xenon is my dream. When is the real cut off for EM to digital?

If you have room for only 2 pins my advice is to buy a player and a project. Xenon, STTNG, and Diner have been up for sale locally with some regularity. AFM is not so available, and costs a lot more. Golden years for early SS would be 1980-1981, many excellent machines made at that time.

jvegas is known as shoeguy in this forum but is no longer actively selling pins.

Playable Now: Centaur II, Doctor Who, High Speed. Playable Soon: Breakshot, Sorcerer Later: Flash, Genie, Seawitch Fondly remembered: Firepower
