This weekend somebody was showing me a Bally Playboy they had with a playfield overlay which looked pretty slick to me.  I couldn't really find much online about them and the guy said he had bought it 7 or 8 years ago so they could be less common now.

So what can you guys tell me about 'em?  Are they good, do they make the gameplay suck, does anybody still make them, what games did they make, where can you find them now?

Just curious to find out more 'cause I'd never heard of that particular method of fixing up a playfield.

I do have one installed in my Playboy, it's nice to the untrained eye, but the details and colours are not quite as good as the original. CPR makes a new Playboy playfield, so it's kind of a waste to do this yourself, with all the time and effort it's easier to just buy a new playfield.

The overlay I have is a mylar material, I wax it as normal and it shines like crazy, and gameplay is virtually the same as a regular playfield with mylar on it.

I hope this answers the questions you have.... my personal opinion is NOT to use an overlay, but when you have NO other choice, it can make a game.

I've seen them for Evel Knievel, Capt. Fantastic, Kiss and Playboy. I'm sure they are around for alot more games....

I installed one on a Xenon a couple of years ago. Really nice and not that hard to installed, especially if you spray your playfield with Windex and then you apply the overlay...gives you time to fit it nicely onto the playfield. The only draw back I had with the overlay is that it made the ball movement faster.

just look the way i did it....everyone who saw my KISS said it looked great!!

I know overlays for KISS, and EBD are still for sale but the rest are pretty rare...I think they just dont make them anymore

also put one on for Black Knight...50 bucks later and a few hours of work made it into a new game!!! not a good as a new $800 PF and 40 hours work, but made a VERY NICE playing pin

See now this fascinates me!  I'm a graphic designer by trade, but mysteriously the idea had never come to me.  Probably 'cause I just didn't realize anyone put overlays on playfields until this weekend.  Looks like you bid an amazing job on that magneto.

Probably bookmark that link for future reference!
