Im in the middle of working on a Bally Playboy and something is puzzling me about the way its scoring.  It was hard to explain so I made a video....

I have manually tested all switch's and coils and everything is good.  It appears that the game needs to count by 100s.  So if I hit a 500pt target, it will count up to 500, by 100 (ie. 100, 200, 300, 400, 500).  And it will make a sound for each increment.  After a lot of hits, it takes a while for the score to catch up and it the sound is non-stop.  You can see it a bit in the video after the 2nd ball.

Anyone every encountered this?  Is this normal?  Its very odd.

In my opinion this is normal, it's the way they made it count the points. This way it make more sounds and it is more ''exciting'' !

Yep, as Hal mentioned.

This was one way to show 'achievement' to a player.

Also perhaps as another way to transition from EMs with steppers/chimes
stepping 'one' at a time, to these early solid state games...

Cheers,
- Sylvain.

Thanks guys.  Very interesting.  I figured there might be a setting of sorts.  It did remind me of an EM machine.  So all Playboy's play like this?

I looked on Youtube at another game playing and it didn't seem the same.

If you watch other videos.... the scoring doesnt seem as slow or crazy....

You can change the sounds setting with the dip switch to get those different noises !!

Perfectly normal. All early Ballys did this. But your sounds are completely off key. I suspect you have a sound board issue.

the small .05uF in parallel with the switch contacts
I remember hitting one target that caused it to go crazy with point and sound.it was intermittent and very annoying  but VERY similar to yours.
try again one switch at a time several times .....and like you say the other machine doesn't do the same thing as yours.
I played my star trek yesterday and didn't do that funny thing yours does.

Sorry you can change sounds setting by the switch in the coin door, not the dip switch.
Yes the sound look strange, the pitch look faster. And maybe you have a very sensitive switch that register 2-3 times when the ball hit it, that's why the machine continue to count points for a long time.
