I am planning on starting up workshops for collectors, mainly for those with little to no experience in the repair and maintenance of electro mechanicial arcade/pinball machines, SS pins, and vids

In the near future, may try to incorporate some workshops on more advaced techniques like vector monitor repair, vintage board repair, etc, depending on demand

In the mean time, anyone who is confident in the following areas, as well as confident in instruction please pm me to see what we can work out:

harness rewiring ( vid)
graphics reproduction , vector graphics, scanning..etc( Specifically side art and marquees, 48' wide printer is coming soon)
cap kit installation ( monitors)
chassis repair
control panel construction ( new ) or modifications
cabinet building ( cnc + construction +reading blueprints)
Electronic tools, use and proper care, selection
Pinball harness construction
crimping( properly..I have crimped a lot of detonators, but those little pins are a pain in the a$$)
soldering ( high quality, properly)
use of jumpers
playfield deconstruction / reconstruction
coil changing, flipper assembly rebuilding, "shopping a pin, etc.
multimeter use on pins
reading schematics
electromechanical repair

etc... whatever else you can think of

I am covered off on some of these, but not all.
There will be a nominal charge to atendees of these workshops, and i already have significant demand for them, any instructors will be compensated on a split basis
I have an instructional background ( from the Army) with everything from basic training and firearms of all types, up to highly technical instruction such as EOD. If you need any assisitance in preparing lesson plans / power points / instructional theory / overcoming shyness of public speaking, I can help you out with that no problem.

Any suggestions appreciated, and pm me your interest to both help out, and make a little money

This will be an ongoing thing.
Thanks
Gerald

need to setup DL - distant learning.
nothing that a high speed connection and some web cams can't handle.
would probably work well for someone like Grauwulf as well with his knowledge about monitors and boards etc. and save him the drive from London.

Just a thought.

Great idea many of the topics I will attend if I am in the area.

Also...Gerald, given your back ground that you stated I think it would be more fun to watch a video of various weapons destrying a "garbage cab" versus the burning videos we have all seen.

Current Lineup:
Black Knight, Riverboat Gambler, Ripley's Believe it or Not, Flintstones, Orbitor 1, Wipe Out, Breakshot, The Simpsons Pinball Party, Fish Tales, Eight Ball and a 60 in 1 Cocktail.

Hell no!

I would be up for instructing how to wire a JAMMA cabinet properly, though.

Thanks guys..There is a lot of interest out there for this sort of stuff, even for non arcade machine owners and the opportunity to network, trade, who knows what else exists. Also, like many other hobby based seminars, I can see some people gettting fed up and just going to the instructor and saying " how much for you to fix my s^%t?"

I agree with you, I had that occur many times..."How much to put a door up for me" , well I tended to turn those down for the sake of conflict with the shop owner, however if the situation arose I'm sure ( I would) the instructor would / should feel the responsibility to discusss the situation with you first, as to aleviate any conflict etc.

I can teach some good classes:

- how to understand how much a mame costs to buiild

- where-the-f**k-did-I-put-that-tool 101

- Death to Sharpies on playfields for dummies

- electricity... it ain't your friend

Seriously, I would just do an open subject class... Ask Uncle Sparky. Hmm... that would make a great column...

Yes, I would fully expect it to occur, but that would be one fringe benefit for interested parties( instructors) . As some of you know, I am not too greedy, but would want a small piece of the action.Good point

Maybe i should approach the local public access TV and pitch a show, I was of the understanding that you can basically do whatever you want, as long as it is semi professional and is guaranteed to put people to sleep!

Also , there are some subjects I forgot to mention:

How to "dehydrate a cabinet"
How to lowball without getting punched in the head or getting told to f off
how to gently bash things to fix them / how to direct your anger into a laser beam of awesome repairness
how to say "no" or also known as how much is too much??

That would be good, then they would be interested in signing up for the next class" how to recover from solder burns with dignity." and the follow up, how not to piss off the teacher

If i teach anything, im planning to talk like the guy from king of the hill Bumhauer, so they have no choice! ( Just joking)

All joking aside, some basic safety in regards to electricity, tools, moving games around, protective equipment, etc, should be incorporated at the start of each lecture. For example dischraging monitors if it is a monitor class, etc.

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
If only I had more time and were closer, I'd love to teach some of the classes,
(safety, EMs, solid state machines, typical faults and maintenance,  DMM usage,
reading schematics, electronic 101, soldering and unsoldering basics, component
replacement, etc.), but I have too little spare time these days to consider this.

Perhaps things will change in the future.

Good luck!

Cheers,
- Sylvain.

Looking for 1966 Bally Capersville, 1967 Bally The Wiggler, 1981 Stern Viper, 1986 Pinstar Gamatron,
1986 Williams Grand Lizard, 1991 Williams Bride of Pinbot, and a few others.
Cash or some trades available. Could also repair a machine of yours +/-$ if needed, in exchange for
one machine on my want list, non-working/unshopped welcome!

Soldering and DMM skills are definitely my weakest points.. and reading schematics.  ugh..

Now there is a good subject, that almost everyone can use...
How to put the romance back in your marriage through your purchase of arcade games or
how to make your wife happy by puttering around on games, and message boards 24 hrs a day or finally
where to find a woman that shares your interest's or is too busy to care or notice!!

Maybe i should approach the local public access TV and pitch a show, I was of the understanding that you can basically do whatever you want, as long as it is semi professional and is guaranteed to put people to sleep!

Also , there are some subjects I forgot to mention:

How to lowball without getting punched in the head or getting told to f off
how to gently bash things to fix them / how to direct your anger into a laser beam of awesome repairness

I will teach this one!

After receiving hatemail from an unnamed coward who trolls this board, I guess I have to clarify my opinion on this particular matter:

If it is a member of the board, or someone who comes down and helps out all the time, of course I don't wan't or need a piece of the action, hell I would probably throw in some parts for free if I had them handy, anyone who knows me, would understand that. However if it is a member of the general public looking for repairs, I might like a piece of the action, as I do have a lot of overhead, bills, commitments, etc, and after all, this is still a business albeit with a community or hobbiest component that is quite separate from the business aspect, as well as being quite devoid of any profit.

Hope this clears up my position

Thanks

Yikes! Anybody who sends you hatemail etc certainly dont know you. I can honestly say that Gjd is one of the few humans on this earth with a low level of self servitude. I met him first time while helping at the museum and all I can say, is Im glad I did. I think I can speak for most here that you are a credit to this hobby and I personally thank you for all your help and generosity .

Brian

Another auction sounds good but you might want to consider another date.

The 25th is the Canadian Pinball Championship
https://www.theplaydiumstore.com/TournamentPage.aspx?Topic=Tournament1

& the 31st is Halloween and the
The Church of the Silver Ball Tournament.

I'm trying to keep an updated page of events, so if anybody has anything send me an e-mail.

Thats a great business plan, open up, don't charge anything to anyone and keep running forever.  Gerald has always been cool with me...  Guess there will always be dumb haters.
