I stumbled across a 5 part YouTube tutorial on playfield clearcoating.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fScfkS9GZoM

I was just wondering if his method is generally considered good?  I was thinking about trying this next summer (after the house renos are done).  I know there are a lot of bad clearcoating tips out there (like that crazy video that was around a while ago where the guy left everything on the top of the playfield).

Any comments?

Here's my tip:
No wet sanding, it is easy to sand dry and preserve the wood of your playfield
Usually inserts are ''loose'' and it is better to remove them and reglue them or you will have chance to experience
the insane ''cracks inserts'' problem.
Personnaly i prefer varathane clearcoat, 200% more easy to work with minimum hardware with nice result AND it is easy to remove if you need to repair something on your playfield.
Easy to polish again after few years of play and easy to apply a new layer if needed.

I agree with Hal.I would love to try auto clear but Varathne is easier and a lot less money.I've cleared 4 games so far and this morning put down the first coat on my 5th job.I just follow Clays guide and I've had no problems.

I am clearing my pinbot PF this weekend.

I plan on using a brush with Varathane Satin for the first 3 coats.
I just want to fill in the brush strokes and sand it back down to a level surface and allow the coats to "gas" out.
Then i will use the spray can of Varathane full gloss. I spoke to an automotive painter and was told that this approach is also acceptable.

I just saw Mr.Niceguy's results last night first hand, and I have to say.. he's got a great method.  Something I'd actually like to try.

It't true.  I showed Brock my "results" and he showed me his.  I must say, he was very gentle and has nice "results" himself.

HAHAAH

I would like to show both of you my 'results" also. Gee that sentence is misleading but seriously.. touching up a PF is such a learning experience.....everything from using latex vs enamel, taping, steady hand, good brushes, oh god dont forget color matching. I suck at that.

Ted, you are a clearcoating nutjob.  You picked up that CrossTown on Sunday night and you've already put 4 coats of clear on it ??

What, did you put the first coat on in the car on the way home ??? !!!

I've found that using a wide sponge brush will cut down on the brush strokes problem immeasurably. Varathane goes on very smooth.
