I am considering purchasing a Pinball machine (Data East) and having it shipped to Bufallo, NY, where I will pick it up and drive it across the boarder.
I realise there is some paperwork to do (to avoid Brokerage charges), but anyone ever do this? Anyone know what the extra charges may be on a $2300 US machine?
Also, isn't there something in the Free Trade agreement that will allow us to bring older electronic goods made in the US into canada with no Duty added?

There is no paperwork. No duty. Just tax on whatever the receipt says and that's only *if* they make you pay it at all.
Pull over. Pay. Leave. It's very simple as long as you have a believable receipt and don't say something stupid. If you lie and they catch you, prepare to have a long night.
You will pay GST and PST on your purchase. There are no duties to pay. Have a receipt when you cross. If it's for less than what you paid make sure it's reasonnable or they will investigate and make you pay tax based on Ebay or some other online prices..

When I brought back my TOM a few weeks ago......I had a copy of the 4 sale add aswell. As they wanted to see the add when my friend brought his machine over....they actually went on the internet and checked craigslist for the listing
A listing of my current games can be found in the Gameroom section(Updated June 20,2010)
On a $2300 machine, I think you can expect to pay the PST and GST. Furthermore, they will also include the cost of shipping when calculating the total cost of the item. It doesn't seem fair to me, but that's what they do. Of course, they also convert the USD to Canadian. So a $2300 machine with $400 shipping and a conversion rate of 1.25 could result in a tax grab of over $400 at the border. When they ask you if you got it on Craigslist or eBay, and you don't want them snooping around, just don't tell them that's how you came upon it. Even if it is listed on eBay, for example, there are lots of other ways people find and buy pinball machines. Besides, it's not really any of their business HOW you got the machine. You have it, you are declaring it, and you are showing them the receipt. They don't need any more information than that.
