Hey dudes/dudettes, Took the opportunity to check out both Kick-a** and "the Losers" last night, but let's stick with Kick-a** for a bit. This movie is not for kids, make no mistake about it. Although it appears to be toned down from the graphic novel, its still deserving of its "R" rating (well, that's the rating in the USA, not sure around here). There's foul language galore, especially from minors but it is based on the comic so one has to expect this (and it works better) and there's enough blood and gore to I gather warrant the rating. What surprised me was the added layers to the movie, which became more evident after discussions with friends afterwards, and upon reflection the next day. I can't speak for others, but my own expectation and yes, enjoyment of violence in movies was literaly turned against me. That's not to say this changed me in any way, and I'm also not saying Kick-a** is a deep movie, but although this may be a popcorn movie at heart, it's wrapped deeply in subtext and satire and, well, popcorn's never tasted so good. Its not perfect but for adult entertainment, from a comics fans perspective, you can do worse. Just be aware of what you're getting into and this is probably not a good date movie . |
