In Vancouver the H1N1 flu is everywhere. My wife is a teacher and she says her school has 40% absenteeism. My doctor says he swabbed 400 people last week, and 360 of them had H1N1. They are refusing to test for it anymore. My wife's family is visiting from Montreal and they freaked when I told them I had it because it is not that prevalent back east.
So it is coming your way.
What has it been like - well just like any other flu. Fever, headache, stiff and sore, runny nose, sore throat, and then when you think you have it cleared, it decides to spend an eternity in your lungs and sinus.
So get the flu shot when you can, lord knows the shot can't be as bad as some of the other things we put in our bodies.

I want to get vaccinated... but with what you have described, I wouldn't be surprised if that is what I had 2 weeks ago. I caught my son's cold which he got from daycare. I have had worse flu-wise... but damn, my lungs are still full of crap and makes me cough to the point that I get dizzy with a huge headache, and my sinuses are half congested.
Mind you, these are symptoms of leftovers from a good flu, so did I get the flu or H1N1, who knows... all I know is that I ain't dead.
I believe I had it in the spring and I too had fluid filled lungs (and a fever), but otherwise it wasn't too bad. It seems to affect different people to different degrees. Some people might have it and not know (and become carriers) while others can be sent to the hospital, or worse. Because of that, it's important to get vaccinated. I will as soon as possible, even though I may have had it, I want to make sure.

the shot does not guarantee that you will avoid getting sick listed some of the ingredients in or shot we have. I for one will avoid the poison and take chances with my own immune system.
*Thimerosal,a mercury derivative is added as preservative. Each dose contains 2.5 micrograms of mercury. *Other ingredients include: squalene, vitamin E, polysorbate 80 and trace amounts of egg proteins, formaldehyde, sodium deoxycholate and sucrose.
WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS
Serious Warnings and Precautions Advise your doctor or nurse immediately if you experience these reactions shortly after receiving your injection: • body rash • tightness in the throat • shortness of breath
SIDE EFFECTS
As with all medicines, AREPANRIX™ H1N1can cause side effects. The very common and common side effects are usually mild and should only last a day or two.
Very common (may occur with more than 1 in 10 doses):
• Pain at the injection site • Headache • Fatigue • Redness or swelling at the injection site • Shivering • Sweating • Aching muscles, joint pain
Common (may occur with up to 1 in 10 doses):
• Reactions at the injection site such as bruising, itching and warmth • Fever • Swollen lympth nodes • Feeling sick, diarrhea
Uncommon (may occur with up to 1 in 100 doses):
• Dizziness • Generally feeling unwell • Unusual weakness • Vomiting, stomach pain, uncomfortable feeling in the stomach or belching after eating • Inability to sleep • Tingling or numbness of the hands or feet • Shortness of breath • Pain in the chest • Itching, rash • Pain in the back or neck, stiffness in the muscles, muscle spasms, pain in extremity such as leg or hand
Rare (may occur with up to 1 in 1000 doses):
• Allergic reactions leading to a dangerous decrease of blood pressure, which, if untreated, may lead to shock. Doctors are aware of this possibility and have emergency treatment available for use in such cases • Fits • Severe stabbing or throbbing pain along one or more nerves • Low blood platelet count which can result in bleeding or bruising
Very Rare (may occur with up to 1 in 10,000 doses):
• Vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels which can cause skin rashes, joint pain and kidney problems) • Neurological disorders such as encephalomyelitis (inflammation of the central nervous system), neuritis (inflammation of nerves) and a type of paralysis known a Guillain-Barré Syndrome
If every single Canadian is inoculated, then 30 Canadians could have the potential for a severe side-effect, compared to 10 million people sick, 100,000 people in hospital and 10,000 people dead.
The fear mongering about the vaccine will result in many preventable deaths this season. It needs to stop.
Vaccines have saved more lives than any other medical intervention ever. It has wiped out smallpox, and would have wiped out polio and measles if not for the anti-vaccination scare mongering.

i know of 2 people good friends who had the swine flu this summer and they lived to tell the tale. don't you find it odd that they tried to do the same thing in 1976 with massive add campaigns and a large percentage of the people who got the shot ended up with neurological problems. sorry i don't believe one size fits all in when it comes to meds.
Flu killed thounsand of peoples each years... never got any shot in my body for that... first thing you will know in three years, it will be mouse flu and you will need something else. Let the fear control you and goverment will spend billions in medecine and not even used them (chicken flu...).

There is some debate regarding the mercury additive in inoculations. However nothing has ever been proven. Pregnant women, children around age 2 and anyone born after 1950 are highest at risk. A mild to average flu to most turns into a wildly high viral particle count, total shut down of one's ability to breathe, etc for a small percentage.
Who wants to take THAT risk? I believe it is NOT a money making conspiracy for pharma companies. There are far too many physicians involved and there is no way.
Sorry, but I have to say it's in very poor taste to bring up a young girl's death to support your point. Given the vaccine has only just been released in Ontario, she really wasn't given a chance to make a choice.

There is a theoretical link between vaccines containing mercury and autism. Many reported cases of autistic symptoms developing after a vaccine is administered in young children.

Just a thought...
I have this rock that keeps away tigers.
Does it work?
Do you see any tigers around here?
How much for the rock?
All kidding aside, the amount of mercury in those shots is infinitesimal. You would get more heavy metal poisoning nerve damage from breathing solder smoke than you would get from those shots. People, understandably, worry about their children over the long term and fear the "possibilities". It is also possible to die from the flu. It's a gamble either way.

best way is go out and research for yourself, we have that power more than we ever did. make the best decision for you and your family. btw how much for the rock what colour does it come in?
So, let's assume that physicians are the greatest authority on whether the risks in taking the H1N1 shot outweigh the risk of contracting H1N1.
How many physicians are telling people not to take the shot?
They may not be the greatest, but they know more than the average dude that freaks out about scary sounding ingredients.
BTW, the mercury in vaccines is ethyl-mercury, not methyl-mercury (the harmful kind that is in thermometers). The ethyl-mercury is metabolized by the body and expelled, it is also in amounts lower than is found in a tuna sandwich. It has also been conclusively shown that mercury does not cause autism. Some people thought it did because vaccines are given around the same time that the first symptoms of autism appear, but it turned out to be a coincidence.
There's also a lot of fuss being made about the 'adjuvant' squalene that's in the vaccine. This is a natural additive to boost the immune system so that less of the dead virus is needed. This makes the vaccine cheaper and easier to produce. Yoour body also produces squalene and have it flowing through your veins right now. No need to freak out about it.
There's a whole lot of vaccine information out there being spread by ideologues who can't stand the mere idea of a vaccine. They will always find an excuse to campaign against them.
I don't regret mentioning the girl to prove my point. I know she didn't have a choice since the vaccine wasn't available yet, but what if it had been? I just wanted to highlight that the flu, any flu, is a very serious disease. It's not something you should leave to chance.

Thanks. I wish I didn't have to bring her up, but when people make light of the severity of a disease, I feel like the best way to convince people that it can be deadly is to bring up a specific case. Was it in poor taste due to her age? There was a 24 year old woman that died a week earlier, I could mention her instead.
Consider what would happen if you opt out of the vaccine, then pass on the flu to someone who gets serious complications. I couldn't live with that on my head.

I had the H1N1 flu too (I think) and I survived just fine. For most people it's just a week off of work, but for a few it can be very serious and result in hospitalizations or worse. Even in the best case (a week off of work) that puts a major strain on the economy, and that's definitely not something we need right now. It's also not pleasant to be sick, but you don't need me to tell you that.
As for the 1976 case, the flu didn't have a wide outbreak like they expected, this time it's different. The disease has spread like wildfire and is spreading very fast. There's already a body count and it's possible that it may mutate like the 1918 strain (also H1N1) and come around again and kill even more people. Also, vaccine manufacturing methods have improved over 30 years and complications are even less likely now.

Been there, done that. No need to panic, it's a very mild swine flu (at least this wave). Makes your head very spinny and made me irritable. Our family had it 2 weeks ago.
Our entire town was coughing last week, and some people are getting reoccurences this week. They stopped testing for H1N1 in Burlington way back in June I think it was - I had asked my doctor and she said so many people tested positive they were only testing people at high risk of complications.
Both my sons schools and the daycare I sit on the board for had greater than 20% absenteeism which put them on cautionary measures (which essentially means cleaning the school more often).
Compared to the seasonal flu, this particular H1N1 is turning out to be very mild but it's moving very rapidly because even if you don't have bad symptoms, you can still be a carrier. If you can save yourself (and the rest of society) a week off work by taking a shot, do it. The problem with pandemics is not always the sickness itself, but the fact that so many people get sick at the same time, thereby putting an enourmous strain on health care and all sorts of resources (and then the weak start falling through the cracks).
Funny enough, people in their 60's and better with good health are least affected by this one because they have the potential for better immunity due to previous exposure to H1N1 like viruses in the past. My 60+ mother-in-law, 70+ Aunt and 80+ father-in-law all stayed with us around the time we were recovering and likely still infectious and none got sick (while all four of us did).
So what you "save" by not taking the shots, you'll likely "pay" for in your taxes.
Thanks. It is a serious matter but I believe that the argument of whether to take the vaccine (as I will) or not is a logical one and doesn't require the added example (unfortuantely it reminds me of the MAD adverts that have to hammer home the drinking and driving message) tying emotion to the argument doesn't strengthen it (it does the opposite IMO) but that said I don't mean to minimize the threat of the flu or heinous act of DWI

It helps when you gamble to know the odds:

Flu Risks
Flu kills 36,000 people a year in the US, though some models suggest crude excess mortality of over 50,000. Usually, these are people with advanced age or who are already sick (either acutely or chronically). Given 300,000,000 people, that is about 1/8300. (Source)
This year, the swine flu, H1N1, is not just culling the weak and sick. A recent report in Journal of the American Medical Association has some alarming data from Canadian ICU's:
Patients tended to be relatively healthy adolescents and young adults who developed a brief prodromal illness followed by rapidly progressive respiratory failure. Shock and multisystem organ failure were common. Hypoxemia was prolonged and severe, requiring on average 12 days of mechanical ventilation and frequent use of rescue therapies such as high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, prone positioning, neuromuscular blockade, and inhaled nitric oxide.
That same paper also notes that 17% of ICU admissions for flu in Canada did not survive. That's about 1/7, so not much different from Russian roulette.
I'm not saying huge numbers end up in the ICU. But we have no way of knowing who ends up there, no way of knowing who dies there. It's like car crashes: the odds are small, but it could be you.
Flu Shot Risks
The big risk is something called GBS - Guillan Barre Syndrome. This is a disorder which most of the time leads to mild or moderate muscle weakness for days to weeks, ultimately leading to recovery. In about 3% of cases, it is fatal. Fatal cases usually result from people who neglect their symptoms and present far too late for treatment. Your odds of getting GBS from a flu shot are 1/1,000,000. (Source)
Your odds of death from a flu shot are, therefore, roughly, 1/33,000,000.
Mild risks include sore arm, local inflammation, the usual stuff. If you have a severe egg allergy, don't get the shot.
Summing Up
Odds of death from flu: 1/8300
Odds of death from vax: 1/33,000,000
Relative Risk of dying from flu versus dying from vax: 4000:1
If you catch flu because you denied yourself a flu shot, you have effectively multiplied your risk of death by about 4000.

To me, people that say "dont get the vaccine" are kinda like the people that refused to leave their homes during Katrina.
Yes, we are free to make our own decisions, but sometimes we just dont realize what's really best for us. Smarten up.
Good analogy, but it can be even worse since not getting vaccinated isn't even just a personal health decision, it affects everyone around you. A big fuss is being made about the vaccine not working 100%. This is true, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't get it. If both me and my wife are vaccinated, but it only 'works' on me, then my wife's only hope of not getting sick is to avoid the virus. Since I'm protected, her chance of being exposed goes way down. If we both decided not to get vaccinated, both our chance of getting sick would sky rocket.
So get vaccinated, both for yourself, and for those around you.

I have to chime in here because this is really important.
I am a Respiratory Therapist and as an RT we tend to see anyone with breathing problems and H1N1 can cause some serious breathing problems for what should be young healthy adults. Even one of our own unfortunately became infected and within 8 hours was hospitalized in an intensive care unit and on life support. Sure the shot may not be 100 percent effective because nothing is but it will improve your chances of getting through this with fewer health issues for the average person. Remember, it affects young healthy individuals (and other groups as well).
As a healthcare provider, I went and received my shot two hours after my shift started when I had a break in the action. I have to lead by example for my staff and I do this willingly. I have to make sure that I have the tools (the health) to fight off this virus so that I can treat the general population when and if they start arriving in the hospitals.
You know when there is a burning building, people run from it yet the firemen run towards it. When people are sick, others get away from them but the healthcare guys go to help these patients out. If we thought about polio the way that some people are thinking about H1N1 shots we never would have conquered polio.

It's a different vaccine (the regular vaccine is a second shot) .. I've taken the regular one for about 10 yrs myself.
tks I am aware of it. The point is that if they offer both I will take them both. I have never had any trouble whatsoever and I will take the regular and the H1N1.
My question is, if you already had H1N1, do you bother to go get the shot?

That is a great question to ask but one that I need to find the answer to. For example, if someone gets a cold, how much immunity do they create? I have been told that it is about 3 weeks worth (1 week building up the cold, 1 week of hell and 1 week recovering) because just think of some people that get multiple colds over a winter. If that immunity lasted forever, then they would only have one cold.
As for the H1N1, it was originally thought that there would be 2 vaccinations required but instead they are saying that only 1 is needed after all. That indicates to me that the vaccination should boost your system enough for the whole flu season. These vaccinations also include an adjuvant which boosts the immune response. Remember that nothing is forever and who knows what next year will bring.
To know for sure if you had the H1N1 flu, you need to have a nasal swab and unless you did the swab, it would be harder to say with certainty that you had the H1N1 flu. It could have been the regular flu for example.
I will speak with the docs at work tomorrow and get back to you and answer your original question.

I think that after 40 posts on the subject, I can safely say that I am more confused than ever. I see good arguments in both camps, and when there is no clear answer, people will tend to do what they have always done. Personally, I don't think I can get the shot simply in order to pose a lesser risk to the people I know, and the people I don't know. This is a slippery slope and is a type of behaviour I know I won't be able to maintain. If the shot worked 100%, I think it would be a no-brainer....those who get the shot won't get sick, and those who don't get the shot may get sick. The discussion gets mirky when all the variables are factored in.
Like religion, most people are going to go with their personal beliefs on this one. Statistics may win a few converts, so do your homework Ricker.

Hello all,
Those concerned about the swine flu vaccine will be interested in this:
Subject: H1N1 vaccine
From: Dr. Russell Blaylock, M.D.
No one should take the swine flu vaccine. It is one of the most dangerous vaccines ever devised. It contains an immune adjuvant called squalene (MF-59) which has been shown to cause severe autoimmune disorders such as MS, rheumatoid arthritis and Lupus. This is the vaccine adjuvant that is strongly linked to the Gulf War syndrome, which killed over 10,000 soldiers and caused a 200% increase in the fatal disease ALS (Lou Gehreg disease). This virus H1N1 kills by causing a "cytokine storm," which means that it cause the body's immune system to overreact and that is why it is killing young people and is a mild disease in the elderly. (The elderly have weakened immune systems.) This vaccine is a very powerful immune stimulator and carries the real possibility of making the lethality of the virus much greater.
One's best protection is vitamin D3. One should take 5000 IU a day now and when the diseas e begins to spread increase the dose to 15,000 IU a day. Vitamin D3 modulates the immune reaction, reducing the chance of an overreaction and stimulates the body to produce what are called antimicrobial peptides, which are powerful killers of viruses that does not involve immunity.. This is dose related, which means the higher the dose of vitamin D3 the better the protection. Fish oils (the best is Carlson's Norwegian lemon flavored fish oil) also reduce immune overreaction. One teaspoon a day should be sufficient. For severe symptoms, one teaspoon twice a day. Antioxidants of various kinds also help. This includes, quercetin, curcumin, grapeseed extract, vitamin C and natural vitamin E. A good multivitamin/ mineral such as Extend Core ( http://www.vrp.com <http://www.vrp. com/> ) is also essential.
Feel free to spread this around. People need to know how to protect themselves.

Dr. Blaylock presented their cases utilizing this technique to the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. They also developed the ventriculolymphatic shunt in the treatment of hydrocephalus. In addition, they conducted neuroanatomical studies together with the aim of developing improved approaches in vascular intracranial surgery.
It was during his residency that Dr. Blaylock did much of the primary work on intraventricular monitoring of craniocerebral trauma patients, which was reported in the scientific literature. He also worked closely with Dr. Peter Jannetta during Dr. Jennetta?s early research on vascular compression of the cranial nerves as a cause of trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm. Dr. Blaylock was one of the first neurosurgeons to utilize high-intensity nutritional supplementation in craniocerebral trauma pat ients, which met with great success.
Dr. Blaylock has written and illustrated three books. The first book was on the subject of excitotoxins ( Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills ) and how they are related to diseases of the nervous system. His second book, Health and Nutrition Secrets That Can Save Your Life , covers the common basis of all diseases, nutritional protection against diseases of aging, protection against heavy metal toxicity, the fluoride debate, pesticide and herbicide toxicity, excitotoxin update, the vaccine controversy, protection against heart attacks and strokes and contains a new chapter on omega-3 fats. This book has been newly revised as an oversized paperback. His third book, Natural Strategies for Cancer Patients , was released in April, 2003 and discusses the ways to defeat cancer, enhance the effectiveness of conventional treatments and prevent complications associated with these treatments. In addition, he has written and illustrated three chapters in medical textbooks, written a booklet on nutritional protection against biological terrorism and written and illustrated a booklet on multiple sclerosis. He has written over 30 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals on a number of subjects.
Since the publication of his first book he has been a guest on numerous national and international syndicated radio programs and appeared on the 700 Club several times. He appeared on Nutritionally Living with Dr. Ward Bond. Presently, he is engaged in a monthly radio program discussing his book, Health and Nutrition Secrets on Raymond Francis? program Beyond Health . The series will run for 12 months.. He lectures widely to both lay and professional medical audiences on a variety of nutritional subjects.
Dr. Blaylock serves on the editorial staff of the Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association and is the associate editor of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons , official journal of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons. He has a monthly nutrition newsletter, published by NewsMax.com , The Blaylock Wellness Newsletter .
Dr. Blaylock serves as the medical consultant f or the Fluoride Toxicity Research Collaborative . He was recently awarded the Integrity in Science award by the Wes tin Price Foundation. Presently, he is a visiting professor in the department of biological sciences at Belhaven College in Jackson , Mississippi ..
At present he is a member of the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons, the American Nutraceutical Association, the International and American Associations of Clinical Nutritionist, the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, American College of Nutrition, American Association for Health Freedom, National Health Federation, American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and the Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation. He was recently appointed as a member of the Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and the Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation. He was also recently appointed as a member of the Scientific Advisory Panel of the Life-Extension Foundation .

That drivel is from a "Dr." who is trying to sell Vitamins online isn't it? Come on, there's very little evidence that herbal remedies and vitamins are more than placebos.
Americans are conspiracy theorists, in fact they outlawed the use of "sassafras root bark" the whole basis of the drink in the US because after feeding pounds of safrole to rats, a number of the rats developed cancer. So now, most of what you get is a substitute. You have to search for real sassafras root beer (but you can get it and make it in Canada). Come on, who drinks pounds of anything (well maybe over a lifetime)....
... in any case, there are risks we take every day, and yes, governments have f*cked up in the past, but since I'm not likely to get pregnant, I think I'll take my chances with modern medicince....

I love how that chain email spends more time talking about how great this "Dr." is than talking about the vaccine. It offers no evidence, just one giant appeal to authority.
And folks, please don't get your health advice from chain mails or message boards, talk to your doctor. You can do your own research, but let's face it, you practically need a medical degree to sort through all the rubbish on the net.

If the consensus of the Canadian health profession is take the shot, then do it! This is one time where trying to prove you are an independent thinker might jeopardize the populus. Thats selfish! This is an EPIDEMIC...even worse, a PANDEMIC. If you don't understand, get someone to explain it.
Before dropping out of university 23 years ago, I was majoring in miocrobio/biochem. What did I learn? The health profession is a group of people who are very learned. Unless you have the credentials to prove otherwise, take their word. You must be an idiot if you are going to fight the trend here.
Wanna learn more, surf the web on EPIDEMICS. See what has happened in the past.
Don't be a selfish fool! You can go against the grain any other way, but not where public health is concerned. We are Canadians, and we are supposed to be civilized people.
the amount of mercury in those shots is infinitesimal. You would get more heavy metal poisoning nerve damage from breathing solder smoke than you would get from those shots. People, understandably, worry about their children over the long term and fear the "possibilities". It is also possible to die from the flu. It's a gamble either way.
You want mercury ? Eat fish 3 times a week ...

Consider what would happen if you opt out of the vaccine, then pass on the flu to someone who gets serious complications. I couldn't live with that on my head.
Darn right ! My sister has lupus , an auto-immune syndrome . She ' s often around my family . Just that one fact is good enough for the 4 of us to get the vaccine ...
own; super straight harlem globetrotters fathom centaur farfalla
It is all a matter of your immune system, if your immune system is very strong and you didn't get flu for a long time like me, you dont need it, but getting it is prevention, and there is so much people around that are getting it everyday, that I believe the word PANDEMIC is coming up and faster than we can think...
I think that like Warren said, if the Canadian medical consensus people said that the ones to be vaccinated first are older people, and like Whizzervic said, sick people that have auto-immune, cancer, diabetes type 1, and all the diseases that are listed on the medical blogs, and like Jonny_eh mentionned forget the NET, talk to your Doctor, if he knows your state, he wil tell you...
I will take the vaccine just because I have diabetes type 2 and live in a country environment, which apparently makes us more at risk to catch, and therefore spread, and I always reacted well to all the flu shots I took....I missed a few but was very lucky and only remember one good flu in my life...and I am 45...still questioning it but prevention if you read the West is getting 40% abscentism in their schools....scares the mess out of us no ???
We will play PB with freakin gloves, and masks at our next meeting

If the consensus of the Canadian health profession is take the shot, then do it! Don't be a selfish fool!
Consensus? Maybe we don't get the same info in Quebec.. or maybe we are all selfish fool (big argument)... a lot of health profession people here doesn't see the need to give the shot to everybody but just to people at risk... it's not more deadly than any other flu just more infectious.
In case of emergency governments in Canada can force people to have the vaccine by law.. or WHO (World health Organization) can force a country to vaccine people or put it in quarantine. No emergency declare now just prevention.
Just take the vaccine, I won't and in a few months, we will be happy and healthy, the only thing I'm sure

I didn't expect this much reaction to my post but H1N1 is everywhere these days.
I respect everyone's decisions and am usually on the side of not getting a flu shot each year, but this time, I feel different, and wish I had the opportunity to get the vaccine previously. That said, I am getting better slowly, but the lungs are under constant attack. Not good.
So to add some thoughts to the debate - I'm no expert but this is how I see it.
The reason the H1N1 is a pandemic is because the majority of today's population have never seen experienced it, and have no immunity. Therefore it spreads like wildfire and unless you develop an immunity, you will assist in the spread and infection of others. It's not your fault, it's just nature at work. It's not that it kills everyone, but it infects so many that is the problem. Eventually it finds its way into the population that are at risk, and they may suffer serious problems.
I was at a trade show recently where 175,000 people attend. I assume I contracted it there, (in Germany). Or did I transmit it there? I didn't feel sick when there, but did 4 days after arriving home. I was shaking hands with 50 people a day. How many of those people now have the flu? How many will they transmit it to? How many of them will suffer serious problems until it keeps going and it is someone you know or love that will have a serious problem.? We just don't see that each year with the regular flu, the infection of so many.
As said earlier, I normally don't get a flu shot, and normally don't catch a flu each year. Maybe once every 5-7 years or so. I appreciate that people don't want to put additional products in their bodies that they don't have 100% faith in. However the reality is we are all hypocrites. How many of us saying this, smoke cigarettes or weed, (or do other drugs)? How many use prescription drugs, or over the counter? How many drink to excess on occasion? How many eat fried foods? How many eat processed cheese? How many eat apples or other fruit? How many eat sausages or processed meats? How many eat any kind of protien, (meat/seafood/poultry) How may drink coke, or red bull on occasion? How many solder with out a mask, or paint, or varnish? What about sanding or fiberglass? When you cut yourself do you disinfect it right away or just leave it?
What I am tying to say is that we all take risks with our bodies everyday, knowing it or not. I am in the food business, and unless you grow it yourself, all manufactured food uses chemicals, including fruit and veggies. Bleach, chlorine, ammonia, nitrates, sulphates, etc., etc. it's all in there. Whether you like it or not, you've been putting things alot worse than what is in the vaccine in your body for many years. I have not included pollution in the air or water or other areas into my argument, and believe this is probably the worst thing of all.
The reality is we take much greater risks each and every day than what is in the vaccine. Eating better foods, or wearing a mask while soldering will help you. Getting the flu shot will help everyone.

Another thing I need to stress is that H1N1 isn't dangerous to old people, like the seasonal flu is. It's more dangerous to people with strong immune systems. It's a bit counter-intuitive, but the people that have been dying from it are young people who's immune systems react too strongly. The same thing happened in 1918, it was mostly young healthy 20 something people that died. It's not hard to imagine this strain mutating and becoming just a 'little' stronger to the point that breathing becomes too difficult.
When I had the flu, it was very mild, except with my lungs. At some points in the day it became a bit challenging to take a full breath. What if it was just a 'bit' worse? Remember, the symptoms you feel while sick is mostly caused by your immune system, not the disease.

When you are innoculating people, the natural tendency for a virus to mutate to its less virulent strains is somewhat defeated. Further so when health care is able to keep tha majority of those infected alive and they eventually recover.
Natural selection is really only applicable when there is no human intervention ie: in the undisturbed animal kingdom.

Lot's of good points that everyone has brought up. It shows that we care which is very positive. Obviously this is a personal decision and we will make the most responsible and right decision for ourselves and families, whatever that is and live with it.

To answer the question that I was asked last night, my infection control officer at the hospital stated that they do not know how long immunity lasts if you already have had the H1N1 flu and therefore still recommend getting a shot.

Hmmm, this brings up another question then. And dont ask me why I think of these things!
A couple of reports I've seen say if you've had H1N1 already, In most cases, your immunity is boosted for up to a month, nice and strong defence. Some can have their immunity boosted against H1N1 by even a few months more. According to a reports I saw on CTV and City yestderday.
So...the million dollar question is...how long does the shot work for? Does it peter out like our own natural immunity does after a month or so?

I went to see my doctor today my Daughter is very sick. No I did not think it was swine flu. It was a common cold he said do you want her to have flu shot while your at it. I said why not. Then I asked about the h1n1 If i should get that at the same time. He said you yes I recommend it but your 2 year old and the 3 year old no? I asked him why not i thought there encouraging everybody to get it. He said they are but never in my right mind would i give a young child like yours a medication that has not been tested more then 1 year? There are to many variables in this h1n1 flue shot nothing bad for adults but younger children could be mortal and different side affects unknown and they have a better adapting immune system then we do or teens do. So I got it also today i said why not i have upper respiratory issue i wont take that chance but my kids no fing way.
Life is like Pinball!! You never know where you will bounce or where your going but sometimes you have that one amazing shot But on the other hand you have those darn gutter ball where you just get frustrated.
Immunity does not last forever. One of the physicians today mentioned that there is discussion about certain shots for tetanus or chickenpox or hepatitis that we think is supposed to last a very long time (maybe 10 years to a lifetime) but will wane in efficacy over time. I guess the thing to remember is that nothing is forever and everyone's response will be different.
So you ask - will the present shot last until the next flu season? Most likely because they are only suggesting 1 shot instead of two and the flu season "normally" comes once a year.
Only time will tell. At least it is not that "T" virus from Resident Evil

It's sad that this happened, who knows what factors may have contributed to exacerbating the H1N1 reaction in this particular loss, but its also sad that his clinic doctor wasn't able to acertain anything unusual was happening (that's the scarey part).
But it's also sad that all the 1000's of people that die every year from seasonal flu don't get such a public memorial either. I suppose it's not surprising, but its amazing to read of the differing reactions (and rising panic) to the pandemic from different communities across Canada. It's been going around since about April, but the rise in sickness is exponential, so it is reaching regional proportions and spreading.
Toronto schools are experiencing something like 10% absenteeism now (and its getting mentioned on the radio), and panic is setting in. We had over 40% absenteeism (smaller community though), not even a blip - they just did extra cleaning in the schools. Some people calling for quarantines and closures....keeping their kids home, the response is all over the place and it's caused by not having a clear provincial or national voice.
Not everyone is going to get the shot, so the pandemic will run its course and almost everyone will get sick, some will die, life will go on, and we will cross our fingers and hope that the virus doesn't turn even more ugly next time around.
So I suggest: wash your hands and your kids hands a lot (water and soap), cough into your shoulder (we've always taught our kids to "give it the shoulder" instead of using a hand), use disposable kleenex, stay home if you are sick, keep your distance from someone who appears sick, get the flu shots, don't spread rumours, and if you are sick, monitor your illness closely and rest.
I remember telling my Mom, when I was 15 or 16, that I had gut pain really bad. She dismissed it as me faking it to get out of school. Finally, writhing in pain I told I would drive myself to emergency if she or my Dad wouldn't (who called an ambulance in those days!). My appendix burst on the operating table - so I got lucky. So I'd also say "listen to your kids" and take their temperatures regularly if they don't seem like themselves.
The conclusion that mercury does not cause autism is specifically not shown conclusively in the paper that that blog entry refers to. Sorry to be pedantic, but it is a real bug up my a** when people alter the conclusions drawn ... to either side ... on this issue. There was that big court case in the US, but it was a specific case with specific circumstances, yet the anti-vaccine folks misrepresented what the judgement actually meant.
I have two kids with Autism, have participated in a number of environmental, biological, chemical and genetic studies and endured countless biomedical conferences and lectures.
To be fair, the evidence concerning mercury was more substantial than a coincidence in timing -- it would have to be since many nations vaccinate at vastly different times yet see the emergence of symptoms at similar times. Having said that, every study that I have ever seen indicates support for the various theories (there are more than one) regarding vaccination and Autism has been flawed and discredited. There are, OTOH, many valid studies that do not indicate a linkage.
Some kids with Autism do have trouble excreting heavy metals and do respond well to treatment for heavy metal poisoning. Some kids with Autism respond well to the removal of dairy from their diet (one of mine responded very well). Some kids respond well to the removal of gluten. And so on and so on, which is why you get different, very vocal, groups of people who get excited about the specific treatments that are working for them. Hell, there was even an apparently statistically valid study that indicated a linkage between RAINFALL and Autism.
I don't believe for a second that vaccinations had anything to do with my kids' Autism, so, in essence, I agree with johnny_eh but felt like being a bit pedantic this monring.

The seasonal flue practically never kills young healthy people, usually only the elderly or infants. Despite that though, this death is still a rarity. The really sad thing though is that the family had been intending to get vaccinated once the vaccine was available.

The conclusion that mercury does not cause autism is specifically not shown conclusively in the paper that that blog entry refers to.
Neither I nor the author said it did, it's just the latest piece of evidence in the big pile of evidence that vaccines and mercury do not cause autism.
From the article:
Quoted Text
Of course, this one study cannot disprove a link between vaccines and autism. But this adds to the growing body of evidence for a lack of a correlation. All studies looking at exposure to thimerosal, a mercury-containing preservative in some vaccines, and autism or other neurological disorders has shown no correlation. And most significantly, when thimerosal was removed from the vaccine schedule in the US (it now remains only in some optional vaccines) there was no corresponding change in the rate of autism diagnoses. (See here for a thorough review of relevant studies.)
Instead of pointing to a blog post about the latest study, I should have pointed again to this Wired article.

Just to add to the whole thing, here is my perspective:
1918... Spanish flu... considered to be a pandemic... millions dead.
2005... Avian flu... advertized at the time as a huge pandemic. It was all over the news. They were talking about quarantines and massive vaccinations, which never happened. Total casualties resulting: 59
I do not want to minimize this latest strain, not by a long shot. BUT... we do live in a society where our sources of information are pure garbage. CNN, Foxnews... all propaganda. They will sell their souls for ratings, so they will milk this for all it is worth. And when this dies down, they will most probably go back to terorism or the economy, depicting doomsday scenarios as they always do.
So unfortunately, in this age of disinformation, it is truly hard to get the truth, so people tend to either panic massively or merely ignore everything, which in both cases has more severe consequences than the flu itself.
Take the panicking mass for instance. Pharmaceutical companies LOVE these guys because they will spend BILLIONS on overpreventing. These people live on fear. And the formula is so simple... scrae the mess out of people on the news, and they run to the closest drug store.
As for the others, they just get so sick and tired of all the contradicting bullshit that they just ignore it. this also causes the problem that if there is a pandemic, they are negligent to themselves and others.
Now... that dirty word... PANDEMIC!!! RUN TO THE HILLS!!!!! WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!
To quote Yosemite Sam : WHEN I SAY WHOA..... AH MEAN... WHOA!
Has anyone checked the definition of what a pandemic is? Let me enlighten you:
A pandemic (from Greek πᾶν pan "all" + δῆμος demos "people") is an epidemic of infectious disease that is spreading through human populations across a large region; for instance a continent, or even worldwide.
Hmm... any mention of death? Nope. Pandemic merely means that the disease, REGARDLESS OF IT'S INTENSITY, is not limited to a certain territory, such as malaria, which is predominant in Africa but not much at all in North-America. Right now, the panicky crowd think that a pandenic is like the bubonic plague. NOT TRUE. A pandemic CAN be something like the bubonic plague, but can also be a runny nose and a slight fever.
Now... let's focus on the disease at hand, and not the spread of it. A-H1N1 is a flu... to be taken seriously? OF COURSE... but it is still a flu. You will not bleed internally. You will not mess your brains out. But you will feel like crap, cough up mucus, leak like a bad faucet from the nose and pop a few Tylenols.
"but Sparky...people are dying of this!!! Look at that 13-year-old in Mississauga..."
Of course... but THOUSANDS die of the regular flu every year... most generally young children and elderly people... OH WAIT!!! HEY!!! That is exactly the SAME demographic at risk as for the A-H1N1 flu!!! Wow... coincidence?
Nevertheless... H1N1 is the same composition as the Spanish flu of 1918. Luckily, our means of protection are better today. People are generally cleaner than in those days. Medical means are better. But education is key.
Wash your hands, avoid exposure when possible, take care of yourself and take multi-vitamins to keep your immune system strong.
... maybe I should change my name to Dr.Sparky... oh... wait ... scratch that... that's already taken.

The at risk demographic for H1N1 is not the same as the seasonal flu.
H1N1 is affecting pregnant women and young healthy people a lot more than the seasonal flu normally does.
I agree that no one should PANIC (no one here is), but at the same time, people shouldn't be downplaying its seriousness. Wash your hands, cough on your sleeve, stay at home if sick, and get the vaccine when you can.

100% in agreement. But as for panicking, I am part of an employee committee at work and you should see the emails I get... people ARE panicking. One guy even asked for a Purell dispenser... on EVERYONE's desk, and that they distribute masks and gloves for free.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't purell do nothing with the flu virus? I thought it's good at killing bacteria, not viruses. The thinking behind washing hands with soap is that i washes away the virus, purell wouldn't do that.

I actually do not know. If there is one, the media would be all over it and the public relations staff would be answering the questions because they would have the most up to date information. What I have heard on the news is that many ER departments are being swamped and many GP offices as well with parents bringing in their children to be looked at. That is everywhere though, not just my hospital.

These simple rules came true my emails in french . So , i decided to translate it to my best knowledge and share it with you all ...
- Often wash your hands ( Everyone knows that one )
- Avoid touching your face with your hands ( viruses come in true the mouth , noze and eyes )
- Gargle with warm salty water twice a day ( Use listerine if you don ' t trust salty water ) . The H1 N1 takes 2 to 3 days after initial infection in the throat to spread and show symptoms . To gargle prevents spreading . In some ways , to gargle has the same effect on a healty person as the Tamiflu has on an infected person . DO NOT UNDER ESTIMATE THIS SIMPLE METHOD , non-costy and efficient .
- Also , clean your nostrils at least once a day by strongly blowing your nose and then wash the inside of both nostrils with a Q-tip soaked in salty water . It is really efficient to reduce the viral population .
- Give a chance to your natural immune system by eating citrus foods or any foods rich in vitamin C . If you choose to go for vitamin C pills , make sure that they contain zinc in order to facilitate absorbtion .
- Drink warm liquids ( thea , coffee ect... ) as much as you can . To drink warm liquids washes the viruses down into the stomach where they can ' t survive .

Well Squid I thought I should follow up on your question. Apparently you were right and there was "an outbreak" but take that with a grain of salt. If you call 3 cases an outbreak (from the media reports), so be it. There are other centres that have more cases but you are not hearing anything about them. It is simply pure sensationalism and wrong. Now if there were 20 cases in one place, that would raise eyebrows.
Raising awareness I agree with. Fear mongering is another thing.

Agreed 3 cases would hardly be an outbreak (hell they could be in the same family) .. media is just looking for a story to run with I guess

Well I have a dilemma on my hands. My daughter from my first marriage missed her usual weekend with us last week because she had a fever and was feeling ill. My ex wife and I have been debating via email about the flu shot. She also has 2 other kids from her 2nd marriage and she is following the suggestions of so many "viral" emails she has been forwarded lately and will pass on the shot for her 6 and 7 year old as well as our 11 year old. This despite my opinion.
Now she says that their Dr. thinks her 7 yr old son as well as my daughter are just fighting off the H1N1 although this is not confirmed. I have a 26 mo. old son at home with us who wont get his first shot till next week. So, unless I am wrong, I should wait another week to pick up my daughter from out of town for the weekend, which really sucks. Don't want to put my son in danger. Also, I have to live with a decision regarding my daughters immunization that my ex has made for me, possibly based on some vitamin pushing Dr. who is on many a viral email now warning that the innoculation may be the cause of everything from lupus to autism (he is discussed earlier in this string).

If she already has H1N1, the vaccine won't do anything for her. But it's possible she doesn't have H1N1.

Flu beaten and on the way out, hearse leaves driveway, grave digger fills in hole, coaster lives!!
Seriously, the flu effects everyone differently, however my experience with this flu was mild to medium. I had no vaccine, and took no prescription drugs. I continued working the whole time because, like many of us, I have to. I took steps at work to be isolated and etc. to not infect others. (none yet). My flu medicine was tea with lemon, honey, and whisky, and as much rest as possible. Liberal amounts of Vitamin C & Cold FX.
Initially I had fever and sore throat for a couple days. Then that lessened and the congestion and headache, soreness, and fatigue settled in. That was there for about 7 days with little change. That was the frustrating thing. I wasn't getting better for about a week, and was a little worried. Then the body suddenly started kicking the virus's a**, and I improved rapidly within 3 days. However it is still with me in congestion and phlegm to some degree. Overall it's been 14 days. The biggest problem I had was that for 7 days I had mild to medium difficulty breathing. It was a little scary. Tamiflu was suggested to me, but I wanted to beat it without it.
I know some people who have H1N1 who took the Tamiflu and it helped them a great deal to move things along more rapidly. Didn't cure them, just moved the symptoms along. I don't know about this idea in potentially developing more resistant strains of flu. Not a good idea. People are taking it as soon as they get a sore throat. Panic panic panic. In the food industry we have heard of mutated strains of H1N1 with Avian flu in pigs, and mutated Ebola virus with Avian flu! How long until we get the green gas that turns us inside out ala the Simpson's.
My concern this whole time was that I had pneumonia several times as a teenager and was hospitalized. That makes me a candidate for further problems from a flu.
It was more a less a normal flu, and not a big deal. Just like it will be for mostly everyone. However I still say get the vaccine to avoid spreading it to your kids, and etc.

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a Global Epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming in contact with the H1N1 virus in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is. While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced. (Instead of Focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu): 1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications). 2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of your face (unless you want to eat or bathe.) 3. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine or Hydrogen Peroxide if you don't trust salt). H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual That Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method. 4. Similar to 3 above, clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water, or hydrogen peroxide. Not everybody may be good at cleaning nasal cavities, but blowing the nose softly once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population. 5. Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). If you have to supplement with Vitamin C and Vitamin D tablets make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption. 6. Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm. Pass this on to your entire e-list. You never know who might pay attention to it - and STAY ALIVE because of it.

The sore arm is a small price to pay.IMO. The pain in my arm lasted a couple of days. My whole family has had the shots (wife + 2 kids) and other than the sore arm(s) there have been no other side effects.
On another note, a buddy of mine (he is in early 30's) who is as healthy as a horse contracted H1N1. At first it started out with the same old symptoms as the regular flu. After about a week or so he was not improving and in fact his symptoms got worse. He was having difficulty catching his breath to the point where he couldn't even get up a set of stairs so he went to the ER. They told him he had H1N1 (duh?). They gave hi Tamiflu and sent him home. After a couple of more days, things did not improve. He started vomitting blood so he went back to the ER. They did blood work and took an x-ray. He had spots on his lungs and his white cell count was way out of whack. They told him he either had pneumonia or cancer(wow-that's scary). They put him on antibiotics and told him again that if things did not improve within 48hrs to come back to the ER right away. Luckily for him the meds started to clear things up. He is going to follow up with his family doctor to clear up the whole cancer diagnosis thing. As I said he was as healthy as a horse before he got it. Very scary.

Wow, scary indeed. If it was cancer, then all H1N1 did is bringing it to light. The flu cannot cause cancer, not like that! But the more likely scenario is pneumonia since a lung infection like H1N1 can lead to a complication like pneumonia. Apparently, most of the people that died in 1918 of the flu died from pneumonia. Luckily, now we have antibiotics to combat it, so hopefully your friend will be fine.
