In many of the messages on MAACA, there is the comment about paying duty when importing from the USA.
When I import a game from the USA, (which isn't many), I use my customs broker, and I don't pay duty?
GST yes, but not duty? I've never asked him why not, but assume that it has something to do with NAFTA?

Don't call the taxman on me, but what is your experience?
Do you have to pay duty when importing from USA?

Machines made in the USA are not dutiable. When people refer to 'duty', they are probably referring to taxes and/or brokerage fees. Brokerage is only payable when using a broker (obviously) or when importing items using a shipping company. If you import the item(s) at the border yourself, you pay only tax.

Or in my situation, if you get a really nice guy at the border, with a back to the future pinball machine, he says, carry on, have a nice day
no taxes, no duty, no nothing!

now this is more of the exception then the rule hehe i just got lucky.
makes for a nice ending to a 1600km round trip tho

I paid PST and GST when bringing a game in, no duty because the game is 100% american content.

I would only use a broker if I were shipping a game.  And I wasn't as lucky as thunderstorm!!!

I was referred to Affiliated Brokers.  I shopped around and they seemed to be the best.  One machine is around $100 broker fee plus GST and PST.  2 machines is about $150 plus GST and PST.

You just fill out a few pages of paperwork and they set up an account.  They are able to service all border crossings.

You can broker machines yourself-
It's a snap,
That $100.00 is pure profit.
Just go to the CCRA office yourself with the paperwork you collected from the shipper.
Takes about an hour, 55 minutes in line and 5 minutes answering questions.
You also have the opportunity to lie, which the broker won't do, saving yourself money again.

Just a heads up - I use custom brokers all the time for business and get charged one flat fee per entry - ($55). Some brokers say they charge you basis what the value of the shipment is, but that is just BS. All they do is fill out a computer screen, press enter, and in a couple of hours later a reply comes from CCRA and voila it's released.
For a one time shipment $100 is pretty reasonable, but don't let them charge you basis what the value of the shipment is.
