Yeap, I am starting this thread for everyone of us that aspire to one day be green!  I believe we should simply use this one so that we can increase our count without making anyone angry.  So, go ahead increase your count............I know I will

There. No more stupid colors. Now you are all on the same page. Now stop posting these stupid F#@*#@# useless goddamn posts for which people click on, thinking it is actually about something interesting but instead just ends up wasting people's time.

And congrats Gilles. You are top poster for 24 hours. Enjoy. I know I am, since I get just as many PMs about thread reports and people stating that it is a waste of time to post garbage like that.

Are people THAT bored to PM you for such a trivial thing?  Wow.. I can only say one thing to those people:  Get a life.    Seriously.

This is why I love being an op on CGCC.. I haven't received a complaint PM in ohhh... 4 years?  I do respect our users and help out whenever I can of course.  It just doesn't happen.. to any of us ops there.

Must be a French thing.

(I'M KIDDING, RELAX)

That's it, I've offended myself.

PM TO SPARKY!!

(...something I'm actually interested in...),
but instead I wasted my time on this crap.

Thanks Sparky.

This pizza thing annoys me too. It's original purpose was to point out that lots of people like different things, got it. Now it's used whenever there's a flame war. I don't get it.

This pizza thing annoys me too. It's original purpose was to point out that lots of people like different things, got it. Now it's used whenever there's a flame war. I don't get it.

It's called having a sense of humor / having fun.  It's unfortunate to know that many here are lacking in this department, only proven by Sparky when he talks about all the PM's he receives about people complaining.

I think the next time a user is about to send Sparky a complaint PM about something on here they should stop and seriously ask themselves if;
a) the PM they just wrote was seriously worth the time to write
b) the PM will seriously be worth Sparky's time to read / respond (this one especially as you're now going to be wasting someone else's time / energy)

It just boggles my mind to hear about all the BS Sparky has to sift though.  Ive been a member here for a LONG time, and I can probably count the number of PM's I've sent Ian on 2 hands, and I can gaurentee each and every one had nothing to do with MAACA.

So before you hit that 'PM to Sparky' button, put yourself in his shoes for a second and ask yourself if the message is really worth sending...

I think it's called "changing the subject" or "grand thread hijack"

There is an idea....

I will hijack it.

So, speaking of going green, I have been considering purchasing an electric vehicle at some point. Does anyone here know someone who has bought or is buying one, such as the Nissan Leaf?

And don't talk to be about that bullshit hybrid crap. No matter what you believe, it STILL runs on gas! So before you go and spend 30 grand on a Prius (which is the size of a Corolla) that consumes 6L/100kms and has ZERO value after 10 years because replacing the batteries will cost 5000$, spend HALF that on a Yaris which consumes the EXACT same thing, has a resale value after 10 years and chances are it will run just fine.

At least with a fully electric vehicle your costs of running and maintenance are next to nothing. Energy cost in quebec would be 11% of that of gas. I figure what... 15-20% in Ontario? And all you would do is check the tires. So the cost of a battery pack ten years later is not as bad.

Opinions?

The Redneck Express has a Gas guzzling V8 in it, so I just bought a vehicle at the other extreme

As for the leaf it will depend on price.

When I was looking into more fuel efficient cars I found that getting a cheap 4 cylinder thing like the Honda Fit or Mazda 5 would end up being way cheaper then most of the hybrid/disel cars.

As an example lets say for arguments sake the leaf cost $50 - $60K to start.  You can get a Fit for sub $20K.  You have to figure how much can $40,000 of gas get you?  I mean if you drive the fit for the next 10 years are you going to spend $40,000 in gas, then at least you might break even but to actually start seeing savings, who knows how long you would have to drive the leaf.

It really depends on your motivation, most of these fuel efficient Hybrids/Electric cars are at such a price point the only reason to buy them is because you care about your carbon footprint rather then how much you are spending.  But if you are looking at a cash savings, you're not going to find it yet in these new alternative forms of transportation.

OMG, call the cops I lost my posts.........I am back to my real count sniff sniff. Oh well, back to the hijack that Sparky started.  The only reason I would buy an hybrid at this time is to keep this momentum going.  We are running out of gas faster than people think thus we need to get this thing going.

I am more for the full electric vehicle and yes I believe it can do the job nicely.  Prices are coming down and the technology is meeting consumers expectations.  Now we need to get the costs down and fine tune the technology such as charging station etc.

Hopefully Johnny_eh will chime in here on the validity of peak oil as I'm sure his skeptic group has discussed that topic before.

Personally I don't think any of us will be around to see the world run dry of oil.

Peak oil debunked itself last year when the price of oil crashed. When the price of oil reached the crazy heights of 2008, I remember friends buying up tons of energy stocks "oil can only go up!". Not so apparently.

When people make claims about the future the most you can say is "sure, let's see". No one knows for sure. My guess is that as oil gradually becomes more and more expensive, alternatives will become more attractive. Right now they're more expensive than oil/gas, but as the alternatives get cheaper and gas gets more expensive, people will switch. But that would cause demand in gas to fall, which would lower its price, so this will be a long drawn out transition.

Peak oil and running out of oil are 2 different things. Peak oil is when potential offer and demand meet. Running completely out of oil would be the complete extreme.

Best point of reference would be a few years AFTER peak oil. Are you willing to pay 4-5$ a liter of gas? when demand exceeds offer, that pretty much gives the petroleum producers the chance to make a shitload of money.

That would be like REALLY wanting a pinball machine, but at some point (in the future)  there are so few left that a gottlieb raven will fetch 5000$... someone will pay it.

Ok! then just for the sake of argument it is not as bad as I think.......it is nonetheless a finite amount and will therefore run out one day. You and I may not see it but it will happen and we may as well be ready.  Keep in mind that there are other fuel such as natural gas etc. but again they are non-renewable.

We can all argue but I believe no one will argue against this one but again!

Has the Ontario government got past their moritorium on electric cards being road worthy yet?  I think it had something to do with not being able to acheive highway speeds or something like that.  There was an Ontario or Quebec manufacturer that has sold electric cars to Europe (maybe even elsewhere in Canada and the US) but they can't sell them right here in les deux belle provinces.    Or is that les deux provinces qui sont belles?

I agree. Oil isn't rare... it's just the oil that is really easy to get to that is rare. experts know that the arctic is FULL of oil, but getting it is not an economically viable solution right now.

... mind you, they were saying the same about the tar sands 25 years ago. Prices rise, so it becomes more plausible to go get that oil. But, considering the cost of hard-to-reach crude, combined with a more ecologically (albeit slowly...) conscious population and technology creating easier more viable alternatives, we will probably switch way before the mess hits the fan.

Bummer! Who's keeping it out? Tesla or the govt?

Their newer cheaper model coming 2012 at $50k could actually be a big seller IMO

I think buying used is the more 'green' solution.

Quoted Text
Ditching your gas guzzler is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint, but if you really want to do something about global warming, get a used car. You’ll be putting less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

As Matt Power notes in this month’s issue of Wired, hybrids get great gas mileage but it takes 113 million BTUs of energy to make a Toyota Prius. Because there are about 113,000 BTUs of energy in a gallon of gasoline, the Prius has consumed the equivalent of 1,000 gallons of gasoline before it reaches the showroom. Think of it as a carbon debt — one you won’t pay off until the Prius has turned over 46,000 miles or so.

There’s an easy way to avoid that debt — buy a used car. The debt has already been paid. But not just any used car will do.

It has to be something fuel efficient. Like, say, a 1998 Toyota Tercel that gets 27 mpg city / 35 mpg highway miles. The Prius will have to go 100,000 miles to achieve the same carbon savings as the 10-year-old Tercel. Get behind the wheel of a 1994 Geo Metro XFi, which matches the Prius’ 46 mpg, and the Prius would never close the carbon gap, Power writes.

There are a lot of used cars out there that top 30 mpg, and more than a few that reach into the 40s. Just about any Ford Festiva or Aspire will deliver 33 mpg. The mid-’90s Mazda Proteges are good for 30 mpg or so, as are the Dodge Colts of the early ’90s.

Go back a little further and the Honda CRX HF models will give you 39 to 45 mpg in a sporty two-seater that’s fun to drive. If you don’t mind driving the cheapest of cheap econoboxes, the 1985 Chevrolet Chevette got 36 mpg and the ‘87 Chevrolet Sprint got 40.

You may laugh, but these cars are becoming big sellers. USA Today says fuel-misers from the early 1990s are selling like crazy and prices have gone up 30 percent in the past few months. A rust-bucket Geo Metro with 175,000 on the odometer recently sold for three grand on eBay.

Of course, it can be tough finding a car that old that hasn’t been beaten like a drum, and Robyn Eckard of Kelley Blue Book tells us most used car buyers prefer something no more than 5 to 7 years old and with fewer than 100K on the odometer. No problem.

The auto industry has spent much of the past decade cranking out SUVs, but it has managed to offer a few highly efficient cars as well. The Toyota Echo delivers 30 mpg or better, as does the Honda Civic. The Chevrolet Prizm and Mini Cooper come close. Volkswagen’s diesels are good for mileage in the low 30s.

We’ve undoubtedly left some off the list. But the point is, you don’t need to buy a Prius — or any other hybrid, for that matter — to get great fuel economy and minimize your carbon footprint. You might feel better driving a hybrid, but you won’t necessarily be greener.

Definitely not in our lifetime, no.  In fact I'd imagine we'd see a synthetic fuel before we really see electric cars become the norm.

You definitely wouldn't make the trip to Expo in an electric-only car.

Barely make it back and forth to work.

According to the leaf website the thing only gets 160KM a charge and that's assuming optimal conditions, as the batteries get older and when it's cold, your going to get much less.  One way for me to work is just over 40KM.

See, I'm environmentally conscious! The fella that's storing my GREEN (and rust) '70 VW beetle is REUSING it as a prop for his daughter's wedding album. It used to get 25-26 mpg ... but now it gets 0 mpg!

I think buying used is the more 'green' solution.

Totally agree with you. And would add "Using an existing vehicle as long as possible". Alot of pollution is created for every new car that comes off the assembly. I have read that resources would be better allocated to keeping existing and well maintained vehicles on the road longer as it results in a smaller environmental footprint. Of course, that wouldn't feed the economy, so Business/Gov't encouraged consumers to get new vehicles through deep discounts.

Then I vote we all do like Glen and "recycle" classic muscle cars!

Actually, I would love an old Beetle with some new features... like a heater. Mind you, I drove my old CJ-7 Jeep all winter in 1996 and I had no top on it! I didn't have the money to pay 1400$ for a new top so I spent 350$ on a snowsuit, ski mask, goggles and good ski gloves. I would keep a cardboard box in the back to cover the clutch, brake and gas pedals if it snowed while it was parked. I even had a boat AM-FM radio which actually worked, but I couldn hear it over the ambient noise and with the suit on.

Fun times though! Especially driving from Montreal to Quebec and back in -25C weather! Screw comfort!!

Mine actually has a factory upgraded gasoline heater installed. However, it only had one setting: hot! I drove though many a winter quite comfortably in that old girl. Drove great in the snow and for making donuts.

And the reason it is used today as a rusty prop is?

Ya, I know, but it was a BC bug before I got it, when I was 19 and it was my daily driver. I only bought it because it was a cheap ride. A to B. That's it. I was actually vigilante about cleaning as much of the salt off that I could at the coin-op wash during the winter. The '81 Volvo I was driving at the time had 436,000 on it, more rust than paint, couldn't fill it over half or it spilled gas and I had the clean the oil off a spark plug every few days or drive on 3 cylinders. Grudgingly, it had to go. I had no idea at the time I would actually like owning a beetle. Near the end of college, the brakes went and the floors were rusting through and I didn't have cash for a proper fix so I bought a neighbour's '79 Skylark for $200 (3.8 L, V6 engine) which I drove for the winter and gave it back in the spring. I didn't bother to change the ownership or afford insurance at the time. My appreciation grew over the years and I met a VW enthusiast, Klaus, who towed it away to his shed about 9 years ago and haven't had the heart to get rid of it despite paying him rent all this time. I hopeful that I'll get to drive it again.

That's dedication. Take it from someone that has seen it happen to others....you are far better to buy a restored car than pay to restore a car. Unless you can do alot of the work yourself, the end price is always waaaaayyyy more than quoted and more than the car is worth.

I'd see that VW to collector getting into the hobby and buy another restored example from someone leaving the hobby

I am considering a Prius when my lease comes up in a year. It actually averages 5L/100km which is 1/2 my V6 Accord's consumption.

But the kicker here is I can get it with everything I have in the Accord PLUS a technologhy package that has more gizmos than you can shake a stick at. Yes, I agree the self parking feature is kinda dumb. But the distance sensing cruise control makes a lot of sense and the solar panel in the sunroof keeps the car cool when it is off. That is impressive.

There are quicker cars for the buck for sure, but if it can't be a Challenger with a Hemi might as well get all the technology. Kinda like an Apple car (said sarcastically).

My older brother has one of these (Prius), actually it is his second one (the first one got destroyed in an accident on the 401 between Brockville and Kingston). What a well thought out vehicle and so called intelligent car, everyone should buy one of these and at least pretend to be responsible for shits' sake.

I still have a manual 4 cylinder Honda Accord which I am having serious trouble letting go of, it actually has the right to vote, and is of legal age to drink beer in Quebec. It has over 440,000 KMs and when I start it in the morning and take it to work, it still sounds like the day I bought it, and is still so much fun to drive. Scary, built in Japan and just freakin' amazing. I have a Pontiac as well ( that has just reached puberty), and I am just waiting for it to die at the planned 250,000 KM mark which is quickly approaching. I am trying to make sure that I am close to home when it decides to croak suddenly, or when the crankshaft comes out of the engine, or some main gasket gives out, or some other crazy mess happens. Oh well, next one is a Prius for sure.

I always tried to be green, and like most people, sometimes I get fed up and feel it is a crock of mess to even try. But the damn trouble with saying "to hell with it all" always ends up looking you in the face eventually. It is not about us anymore when we try to take care not to mess up a possible future, (even though I remain black and blue from trying to be green) I know I have to keep trying no matter what a-holes I confront. I always tell myself - Some people know what time it is, and some people just don't.

It's late so good night.

Oh wow, that brings back memories of growing up in Elmira..

RAB's right though.. I know buying foreign isn't the best for our economy, but the Japanese really know how to make a long-lasting vehicle.
