Because of a bone-headed move on my part,
I cracked and scractched the front bumper cover on my car.

The damage is minimal and purely cosmetic,
but since the car is a lease, I "have" to get it fixed before I return it.

My question is what's the absolute cheapest way to fix this ?

I "think" it can be repaired ( glued & Bondo'ed ) and painted,
but I'm not sure how much work that would be.

I haven't called around for a replacement part ( new or used ) yet,
but that's my next step.

If anyone has any suggestions, let me know.

BTW, the car is a very common/ordinary  2004 Sunfire.

LMK,
Thanks,
Steph

What color is it?
Because front bumpers are 100$ to 125$
Depending on what colour it is and installing it is very easy

Judge for yourself. I have a picture of the incident. It looks like off white.

Call your local auto wrecker (parts recycler if you want to be politically correct) and tell them the colour you're looking for, and intall it yourself.  That's the absolute cheapest way to go.

Aside from that you can order a new one and have the dealer paint match it and install it yourself or have them do it.  Repairing is likely not a sensible option.

It's Forest (dark) Green.

I called 6 auto-wreckers/used parts place and only 1 place had one (wrong color)  ... for $200.

Then, for fun, I called the Dealership...  brand new, GM-certified cover ... $225 !

The difference is the labor/painting cost from the dealer ..$475 !!!!

So I ordered the bumper from the Dealer, will get it painted somewhere else,
and "try" to insall it myself..

...hey, if Ethous can do it ... so should I    !

Sound reasonable ?

Steph

$475 is quite high for paint - even from the dealer.  Are you sure it's not $475 total with paint?  That would sound more in line....

Wow that expensive.
My friends 2003 sunfire was seriously 100$ 125$ painted and this is 2 years ago.
I have to say installing is easy. but long and you need patience.

Nope...

$225 for the part
$475 for paint and labor

total = $780 with taxes !

You'll love this story...

On Sunday they were calling for severe thunder-showers
with good likelihood of hail.
(heck, they were even flashing it on the TV screen ! )
And sure enough it was dark and windy at our place pretty quickly.

Since my garage is full of junk in the summer,
the car stays in the driveway.

Since I have to return the car (lease) at the end of this month,
I didn't want to risk getting it damaged by hail,
so I figured I would "try" to move it under a big tree next to my driveway
to shelter it from potential hail.

What I fail to notice was the large stone on the ground
cleverly hidden by weeds and such.
And since Sunfires have a notoriously low bumper cover clearance,
I clipped just enough of the rock to crack the corner of the bumper
and scratch the paint
(..I was only going about 5 KM/h, ...but that was enough..)

--

So in trying to "protect" the car from the elements,
I actually caused more damage .

The best part ?
The storm completely missed us and we didn't get a single drop of rain...

So now I'm out $00's for no good reason.

---

As for insurance, my deductible is $500 ... so why bother...

sigh....

Steph
