I just did all the white and green GI on my Space Station with LED's and the difference is incredible. I may or may not do the inserts - I haven't decided yet.

It's a pricey endeavor.

I saw an Addams Family at Expo that had every bulb replaced...and it was just too much...way too bright.  So much so, that it was difficult to see where the ball was at times.

I think if you plan carefully which bulbs to replace, and only do a few critical ones, than it  can be a nice effect.

yes its pricey, its the reason why im gonna order only a few , to see the difference on the insert , and if i like it i will do it for the entire machine.

The GI on my lethal weapon are exclusively white bulb, i dont know what could look like if i try to put some blue led  mixed with all the other white led.

I am doing the inserts on a few of my games right now, and I find it makes a huge improvement on the colors.
A friend showed me how to make the bulbs......although it is time consuming.....it isnt that expensive.

I have also order some on ebay...   http://cgi.ebay.com/25-pcs-Pin.....C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

Price seems better, and he sends you an email and you can buy direct from him if you want to buy any more .I havent recieved them yet,but when I do I can let you know how they are

A listing of my current games can be found in the Gameroom section(Updated June 20,2010)

I have replaced the majority of the inserts bulbs in my CV with leds.  Though it was a little expensive, the difference is incredible.  I will take a couple of pics and post them in the next couple of days.

I have recieved my order and his LEDS seem to be ok.........the yellows could be a little brighter but other than that a good deal.He has ultra bright white and they are bright.
I have done most of my TOM  inserts and it makes a big difference

I have his email address if anyone wants to order direct from him instead of through Epay

Can you describe the basic steps?  What's the idea, a bare socket, a resitor and the led - and then some plastic epoxy of something to cement in the LED?   Just guessing, no clue really.

First ...shave the top of the LED flat......solder one .100 header pin to one leg of LED........solder resistor to other leg of LED.......solder another .100 header pin to resistor.I use a bare socket....and all I do is squeeze the ends tighter and install LED

Here is a pic without the socket

The LEDS I bought off of Epay(sure electronics) and the resistors were ordered from Great plains electronics I believe

I know nothing of LED's. Is that particular resistor used regardless of LED type?

I want to try to make a few of my own, it looks easy.

This would be a WICKED "write up/how to" to have here on the forum!!

Essentially LEDs are rated to carry forward a maximum voltage, it varies depending on the spectrum and intensity of the LED.  That voltage is regulated for the LED by the limiting resistor.  Knowing the specs of the LED to be used and the forward DC voltage, you can calculate the resistor required using this online calculator: http://led.linear1.org/1led.wiz

I am in process negotiating for the North American distribution rights to new manufacturer of very well developed LEDs for use in many circumstances, but I have been keeping the news to myself because the deal isn't done yet, and I have to admit that it was contingent upon launching my sales web site (which keeps getting stalled).  If any news develops in this arena, MAACA will be the first to know.

Home created LEDs work where the DC is steady and not containing ripple, otherwise you get "flicker".

I put one home made Blue LED in a Xenon pop bumper and it makes an interesting difference (And the rest will follow if I don't start distributing the commercial versions soon).  Less effective viewing angle, but the blue hue is greatly increased and dramatic.  It "modernizes" the pin a bit (of this age) to have updated LED lighting, so the effect is very personal to how you like to experience your pins. sanding of the lens of LEDs is one way to get them to throw a broader angle of light, but I find that Superflux LEDs are a much better bet overall (very hardy compared to Kingbright's early attempts at wide angle multicolour LEDs).

Here's one link with instructions on constructing your own "changing light" LED for pinballs: http://www.flipper-pinball-fan.be/

Home created LEDs work where the DC is steady and not containing ripple, otherwise you get "flicker".

This is true...............it looks like they are on very faintly. They work well on lights that are always on.......or flashing

I know nothing of LED's. Is that particular resistor used regardless of LED type?

I want to try to make a few of my own, it looks easy.

This would be a WICKED "write up/how to" to have here on the forum!!

The resistors have to be a certian resistance for it to work right I believe.I could find out what rating when I get home

But it seem to have only 1 led per bulb. I ordered some at canadapinballparts and each bulb have 3 led. Its probably making a huge difference with 3 led compared to 1!!

All the bulbs I have bought have only one bulb....and they seem pretty bright to me......It would be intresting to compare the two.
I put some super white LED bulbs in my TOM for the magic tricks, and when a few are lit....they hurt your eyes.Going to have to change them to normal white LEDS I think

wow...those leds from Canada Pinball are $2 each.......I will have to stick to the single LED style as I have a few more macines I want to do.And at that price it would take me awhile.
I have probably built/bought over 300 LEDS so far and probably havent spent more than $250.00

So far I have partially done PinBot and TOM.......Cyclone and Party Zone have all the inserts done.......and right now I am doing all the inserts on my BSD.I still havent decided if I will do GI or not.........but so far the inserts make a big improvement

Dumb a** question, but how do you solder into the socket?   Its seems a chicken and egg challenge to get the solder, wire and iron inside the bulb socket?    Or do you solder first the leads, the solder on the LED to the leads?

I find it works well in Sci-Fi games.... but a little goes a long way.

The lights are VERY bright and vibrant, which often throws off the image of older games (i.e. pre DMD).

I would recommend you buy a limited supply of colours, and test them out.  Once you decide where the lights should go, then go out and buy them seperately.

Good luck.  Post your pic's when done if possible.

I have been considering installing LEDs in one of my older games just to see the effect. I spoke with a representative of a company selling them in Allentown (same one that had the anti-glare cabinet glass) and they told me that a rule of thumb was to get a LED of the same color as the insert, or else it looks bad. at 1-2$ a bulb, it is something to think about, especially when I get my packs of ten standard bulbs for 89 cents.

I have done a few machines now...just inserts..people cannot believe the differnce in the colors..My TOM is all LEDS inserts and it looks amazing.Pinbot also looks really good
I did my cyclone in LEDS and it looks like a whole different game

And as Sparky said....you should use the same color LED as the insert.........as using a white one will look different.

On Cyclone the 2X 3X 4X etc  inserts are light blue......I used white and blue LEDS to give off different shades of blue...looks amazing.

I will try and take a few pics when I get home and post them here

Hmm... I like the general effect, but I am not crazy about the white inserts being so damn bright. Maybe it's just me.

I would still like to see it on a classic pin, like my Big Game. It would be fun to see...

Well, PinballJM is coming over next Wednesday to bring me his AFM for restoration, and I just emailed him asking him to bring some LEDs. I asked for 9 clear ones along with some color LEDs in order to test them on my Big Game. I will take one of the bonus cards and convert it all to LED. We will see what it will look like.

The only thing though is that I like the frosted ones that are at cointaker.com due to some old Stern inserts being nearly transparent... I think standard LEDs might be a bit too bright, but I will try them out.

My DEMOMAN looks amazing with led lighting and AFM is alot brighter, sometimes the flashing white strobes alot and messes up your eyes.I don't like the ablaze with the 3 tiny led's,the plasic ones work better for me and are way cheaper.

ToM has LED's from bcspinball.  WH2O and STTNG has the ablaze LED's and the whites are very bright.  Took awhile to get used to it.  I'll be interesting to try out a few from cointaker.  My opinion though is if I'm gonna spend the money on LED's then I want it to really pop.  Personal preference.

cointaker now has a promo - use "allentown".   Figures it took me awhile to order - problems with firefox/ie/certificates/etc, but didn't see this.   No big deal - I just did a small "trial" order to try different LEDs in different spots.

From rgp:

If your not sure what you need give me a call. (570) 847-6366

Try our LEDs for yourself, you have nothing to loose.

In stock ready to ship!!!!

Use "Allentown" coupon for show pricing.

PinballJM brought me some LEDs to try on an older pin. apart from one slight problem, they look awesome!!! The only issue I had was that I probably have a parasitic resistance probably on a ground circuit, so when a few of the LEDs are on, they flicker. Actually a good thing to know.. means I have a problem I now know of and I will fix. Here's a pic... I installed the LEDs in the bottom card, and the 3 colored inserts below it. The blue LED on the right was merely to see if the GI would flicker as well, and it didn't.

This Big Game will get the LED treatment once restored.

I tried my home made leds on my strikes and spares and all of them were flikering . Also , the PF has bright colors and it didn ' t look good at all . I don ' t have the flickering problem , neither on my Xenon nor my Flash Gordon ...

I will try the LEDs on another feature lamp circuit, and swap a lamp driver to see if it gets better.

Retiring soon...

I just got my order from Cointaker. I am 110% satisfied with my experience.

They marked the package as "gift" and under 20 bucks so there were no customs nightmares. Used USPS as well.

The shipping ended up being much cheaper than quoted so they threw in a bunch of extra LED's. Shipping was approx 10 bucks less and I got approx 20 bucks worth of LED's as a bonus.

Some of the bonus colours are hard to use, like pink, orange and green, but i am sure I will find a use.

My DM is now PIMPED out. The top section is ALL blue (ramps have a AWESOME glow) and the bottom section is all white (all led's)

I will snap a pic when I get a chance.

They must be "working shipping to Canada out"

I say this because I had the same thing, but they just sent me 2X's my money in LED's in stead

(by 2X's my money I mean 2X's the difference in between shipping charged and actual shipping)

They gave me one of there NEW 555 LED spotlight leds...and is is SO bright I could not see for about 10 minutes when I was stupid and looked at it when I plugged it in....I put it under a white insert and it as just as bright if not BRIGHTER than a flasher.

normal bulb Mag lights are still issued. However, many people do a LED conversion to them on there own dime.

A lot of the infantry dudes use SureFire lights, there BRIGHT

I was issued a 1W LED helmet lamp and I use it when working around the house all the time. It is SUPER bright and takes a LONG time to kill it's 3 AAA batts

Somewhat off topic but I replaced my Pole Position marquee light with a LED marquee light and the coin door lights with LEDS. Definitely made a difference on the coin doors and as the marquee you can't tell the difference. I would love to pimp out my ST:25th with LEDS.

I got my order from cointaker.  My impression of them after having done LED's quite a bit from other vendors is that they're cheaper for a reason.  They aren't bright enough to light an insert anything bigger than a nickel size.  The inverted lens they have will barely light anything.  The yellows are extremely weak.  It has its place though.  There are plenty of small inserts where spending 60 cents a bulb is sufficient than buying a $1 version.  The 89's and some of the high powered bulbs are better.  All in all, it has its uses but it doesn't cover all the usage scenarios.
bcspinball still has the best LED support for pinball, IMO.

Just receive my order today, I was little worry after the pinsrfun comment, but that was my first experience with LED and I am more then happy with it, make a huge difference in the green, the blue and the white. For me I have nothing to compared and I like it a lot.

Here's what Space Station looks like with LED's for the green GI string, the blue lane guides under the upper playfield and the yellow in the lane guides on top of the upper playfield. Normally, all of these lamps use coloured bulb condoms and they're not nearly bright enough. These LED's are the super bright 3-LED style from PBL. And let me tell ya, this game pops big time with these lamps installed.

Let me clarify a bit more.  Yeah, they're not as bright as BCS or pinball life bulbs.  The inverted lens is crappy if the socket is parallel to the pf.  However, they do a nice job in a perpendicular socket and do give a nice effect.  Yellows are still too weak but that is expected.  Would I buy from cointaker again?  Yes.  At that price, it's a good deal and will work in quite a few spots in quite a few games.  I'm thinking Sys 11 where most of the inserts aren't overly big.  WPC pins like IJ wouldn't be ideal for cointaker LEDs.  There's too many larger sized inserts with composite colors on them.

Here's a quick breakdown on the different vendors:

Pinball life: brightest regular bulbs ($1.50US each)
BCS:  best selection to suit every situation and color range, not as bright as pinball life but still nice ($1 - $4US each)
Cointaker: Basic bulbs, lowest light intensity of the three but cheap  ($.60US per bulb)
