That's so weird man! I expect us to get a lot more members now.
I just checked my ISP provided newsgroup service, and it still exists there. It looks like Google dropped support for it for some reason, which REALLY sucks! Did someone upload some kiddie pr0n to it?

Most people use google for it though. And their search tool is priceless! (It goes back decades) It also provides an RSS feed that I can read at work.

Google stopped updating RGP yesterday at about 3:15. You could still view all of the posts made previous to 3:15, but no new messages were being displayed. It then went offline completely this morning. I suspect this is just a google glitch and it will be back up soon. RGVAC is still there, so it's not usenet-wide.
My bill never went down. Nor did they give me a break when they started throttling my account.
Assholes.
and that's precicely when I switched over to teksavvy.com. Never had a problem since. $35 gives me a highspeed DSL line, a static IP and newsgroups (with bins), no headaches, and actual people to talk to when you call the offices! Best of all, none of my money goes to Rogers!

But since I don't have DSL access on my street, cable was my only high-speed option.
"Luckily" another cable HS provider started-up (3web), and although their support SUCKS, the service is cheaper ( $34/mo), faster (7D/1U) and has no throttling.
As for UseNet access, I had to subscribe to a News reader ( http://www.teranews.com/ ) for a one-time of $3.95 .

Same, teksavvy rocks! And they weren't throttled until Bell started to do it. Now Bell is being pursued by the CRTC to prove that the throttling was technically necessary, which it probably wasn't. We'll see how it turns out.

Really? I heard that they were just reselling Rogers service, and was throttled.

Well I just checked and their residential highspeed DSL is 40$, + 6$ for a static IP. And of course you also need to get their modem.

That's odd, I have unlimited DSL with them (and a static IP) for $36 per month. Maybe they raised their rates, and grandfathered people who signed up a while ago? Their support though is exceptional. I've never been put on hold! Two rings and "Hello, how can I help you?" But I haven't needed support from them in a while so it may be different now.
And BTW, you don't need to buy their modem, any DSL modem will do (one that is compatible with Bell, so anything bought in Canada). I bought mine on ebay for $20.

If that's true, then I'd gladly switch to them! I'm just scared of dealing with their notorious tech support.

I have the Premium package at a max of 200gig a month. I do a lot of torrent and newsgroup stuff and I have yet to go over my limit. I don't do gaming though...

I must be on that plan too then, but I do gaming too and haven't been over charged. Also, the static IP is only $4 not $6. And by buying a static IP you get binary newsgroup access (otherwise it's binary-less newsgroup access).

I dumped Rogers years ago, due to their dubious business practices and went with Bell (the lesser of the two evils it seemed). But I think it might be time to move on again.

I use Roger's for everything: 2 cell phones, TV Cable with HD box rental and programming, Home Phone (with great long distance package) and Hi-Speed Internet and get all of that for less than $200 a month. I used to pay over $70 alone to Bell with their long distance pkg. This is not to say I love there customer service, had many issues with them, but you just cannot beat the price in my area.

I pay 58$ a month for Videotron's premium high speed, but at least the installer gave me free TV cable with it. He "neglected" to put up the filters on the line after I gave him a couple of beers...

Modems never have more than one port, unless they're also a router. What you usually want is: modem->router->computers.

I know how computers/networks work..
I currently have a modem/router/wireless combo, and a separate router/wireless.. Both support 4 wired ports. This way is cheaper then getting an 8-port switch. I have 6 wired "items" in the house and 5 wireless. Most routers or modem/router combos only support 4 wired. Hence, I need a modem/router combo...

Thanks for the offer but I also have wiring issues. The house was wired by the previous owner and I have 2 points where the net cables end and there at opposite ends of the house.. Bottome line is I still need 2 routers because of physical issues. Also I like to keep the modem as close to the entry point of the phone line (electrical box) to reduce noise issues.

yup, that's why I said 'unless'. No correction needed
I'm not a fan of those combo devices. I much prefer the linksys wrt54g router, since they let you install a hacked Linux based firmware with a ton of extra features.
I admit that the combo has the advantage of only using one power socket though.

Exacly and allot less room. I have the wrt54g I love it but the combo modem was a great deal 15 bucks at a garage sale that supported canser. Plus it was new in the box never used for a 200$ modem i found it to be a good deal.

Fair Johny, but Linksys didn't really want to this happen - just they were forced to due to the rules of open source software. Their "loss" our gain. From wiki:

The WRT54G is notable for being the first consumer-level network device that had its firmware source code released to satisfy the obligations of the GNU GPL.
If I recall correctly, Linksys fought hard to not have to release the software....
