I hated working IT. Why not try computer science or engineering? There's growing demand for that, the industry has really rebounded.

Hate to hear of your job loss.  Re-training/school is a nice option (although hard for most over the age of say 30 to even consider).  Consider just a different branch of computers perhaps.
I am still only doing a part-time kind of job and not in my Computer Engineering industry (after almost two years of having hard time re-adapting to finding something new).

Let us not give up hope.  Most industries will eventually have their recession years and that is why we have to re-adapt our skills to other jobs...

Sorry about your luck.

Sometimes you need to step back and review what your doing in life. If your working for the man sometimes your too busy to see wtf is out there.

Well for me it's is not so bad I am only 29
But in all seriousness i was a jack of all trades from plumbing to roofing.
Seeing most of my family are in trades I learned allot and I also went to a technical school that did construction and mechanics and welding.
So I have learned allot and I miss being hands on.
When I started computers 13 years ago it was hands on you had to troubleshoot irq dma and place the correct jumpers to get it all to work.
Also when of my favorite HD existed it was slow but could not kill them good old MFM drives.
But now a day a tech can be almost any idiot trust me i met a few.
Also tech had respect 5 years ago now you a piece of turd because YouTube or facebook is blocked.
Oh well will see what the future has for me.
I am thinking electricity can be apprentice with my uncle will see.

Sorry to hear you got the bump.  I was a programmer/analyst in the late 80's/early 90's  -  now I'm a plumber - go figure.  A trade certification is never a bad thing no matter what your background or experience.

Trades are the future... training is cheap and there is ALWAYS work. Trust me. In high school they always brainwash people to go to university and especially in computer sciences... the future they say.

Well, I graduated high school in 1991 and 80% of my friends went into computers... 90% of them are out today or jobless. I was going into medicine but with the political situation in 1994 (PQ came into power and cut everywhere, even retiring 4000 nurses... and closed accesses in schools). Even with a letter of acceptance from a university which was revoked later stating the programs were cancelled for the next 2 years, I couldn't even get into nursing. I went for a trade instead... never regretted it. Today, I make more money than most people I know that paid 100+grand for a university education... mine cost me 400$ over 4 years!

Besides... there is a serious labor shortage these days... everyone is going technical, but no one is there to do the labor. THAT is where the money is...

Retiring soon...
