The thing that bothers me about restoring old cars: Forget the nostalgia or history of it, etc. A new car is so much more powerful and reliable than a 30 year old restored one. Why spend $60k on an old Mustang when you can buy a 2007 Shelby Cobra GT500 for $55 CDN? It is so shiny and new (even more than an exceptionally well restored car can look)....
Hmm, old crappy 30 year old car with some movie history or Ferrari F430 or 911 Turbo S....
I think you've missed the point entierly. The whole idea surrounding the car hobby is to have something different, not something you (and everybody else with credit) can go out and buy or order from the dealer. It's like saying "who wants a TZ (or KISS, EBD, Cap't Fantastic), I'll just go out and buy a Spiderman" P.S. The sticker might say 55K, but I doubt very much if you'd be able to buy one for that. I would like to add, I don't think that car is worth 2.7M, either, but 100K is probably not too outrageous, imo.
Buyer Beware....'nuf said.

You forgot more fun to drive Seriously, new cars are sooooo much better than the classics some of the guys love. I have driven the recently restored Mustang before it was restored, classic Jag (e-type), and others. They leaving me wanting. New cars handle so much better, way more comfortable, more powerful, etc.
I understand why folks go for the classics. Like Aspman said, it's all about having something different than everyone else. Still I would much rather have a nice Subaru WRX STi than the restored 'stang. I love the look of the stang, but I love the handling of the STi (no I don't have one, but I can dream )
I think that most people collecting old cars missed the point that they are just not worth the trouble repairing them . Hmm, I wonder if we can ask Jay Leno what he thinks?!
I understand why they collect the old cars but I would rather have power and technology than an older unique car. I think that the men that collect older classics are 50 years old and up and really collect them for the memories of their youth (when you are old, you are, well, just old....) and not necessarily to have something 'different'. Then there are those who collect because of some Hollywood connection/fame/previous famous owner was famous (like Duke Of Hazzards car collector).
Enjoy whatever cars & hobbies turn YOU on....

It is the same even in pinball. Case in point, the gentleman who paid well over 6000$ for a NIB Black Knight. Why? Because:
1- he could
2- social pin-status, or basically bragging rights.
...And then he unpacked it, played 3 games and the pin is now worth 3000$! And like the car, 99.9% of people won't give a mess...
The auction result is surely bogus. Probably 2 clowns jacked up the price for fun. As for the value, unless you REALLY are a completely obsessed D.o.H. fan, it really just is a souped up Charger. Maybe worth 120000$ if it was an original minty Hemi, but this is a build-up. 75000$ at most. Cost you much less to pick yourself up a 69 with a dead 318 engine and restore it the way you want it. Hemi crate engines go for 12000$, ready to crank. A primo resto job on a body can reach 15000$.
Tell you what... I rather give 150000$ to a professional shop like Foose Racing and tell them to build me one from an empty body shell.
...and make mine black, like the one in the movie Blade... Looks much more bad-a**!

Just a few comments..........one of these cars new would have only been about $5500.00...........prices sure have gone up.it is a fact that newer cars handle better than the old ones but that is part of the older cars charm.Older muscle cars have an appeal all their own.Performance(muscle)is something that is hard to describe.I don't think that the newer cars have the Torque that the old ones did unless your talking Viper, which is more of a sports car.My old Cuda doesn't get verry good gas milage, but it gets a reaction from everybody young and old. There is just something special about a car that is so un-refined and proud to be that way.
Currently own a Bobby Orr Power Play,Nitro Ground Shaker,Recel Lady Luck
Well it finished at 9.95M$US... Wonder if it's a hoax (non paying bidder).. Seems like a legit buyer..
