Honestly this has made me think of doing my Wh20.  Reason is this:

-Whats the alternative?  You buy NOS it won't be dimpled and it will cost more then a touchup and CC.  Also if you buy NOS I would want to CC to protect it so it has to go out anyway.

-11 months - yea but the damage I had was really bad.  It might not have looked like much but PFR told me they had to re-silk screen an area of the playfield.  I had the 2 other companies that do this kind of work turn me down.  TAF they say is a very hard playfield because of all the really bright colors and intricate graphics and I had areas down to the wood, magent burn, a crack right across the orange cloud (Bill Davis said that was going to be really difficult to fix) along with all the hole wear.  Also during the 11 months PFR moved shops so mabye had they not done that it would have been back sooner.

- Cost, still cheaper then NOS with a CC.

Not saying this is the solution for every game, but for me TAF was my first ever game bought and one of my favorites and I just wasn't happy with the playfield.  So my options were buy a IPB repro for around $850 us, then have to dimple and drill it myself and get it CC.  Buy a NOS one for in and around the $1500 mark or get it CC and touched up.  I could have saved some money at the border had I used DHL, $70 was brokrage charges and they charged me GST/PST for the cost of the item which was $1000 instead of the $750 they were supposed to charge me for the repairs, but if I tried to fight it they would have held back my shippment and what would I have saved in the long run for GST/PST, $50 mabye so I paid it.  Next time I'm using DHL no questions asked, I find they are very reasonable.  But anyway my point was other then time lost this was still the cheapest method.

Simply awesome results, but I must say...

- 11 months
- what I consider to be minor damage (remember, I deal with mostly 25-30 year old SS pins)
- cost of 1100$?

I was considering having it done on a couple of my pins, but that locks it for me... no thanks. I guess it is because they do go crazy and even retouch the bare wood areas...

It was the $250 bill I got today for GST/PST and brokrage charges (God Dam UPS!!) that I wasn't expecting.

You shouldn't have to pay GST/PST ...

The PF was yours, you only had it repaired in the US.

[I got hit like that once...
I sent some PCB's for repair in the States,
and when they got shipped back, the package was valued at $500US
and I got hit with $80 of taxes.  I sent a letter explaining the situation
to Customs & Excise Canada, along with a note from the repair tech,
.... and I got my money back 8 weeks later... ]

GST/PST should only apply if you actually bought goods in the US.  (...which you didn't )
You don't pay GST/PST on services done in the US.

The brokerage charges you can't do much against,
but the taxes I would fight vehemently.

Cheers,
Steph

You forget that GST stands for GOODS & SERVICES taxes. Sending something out to be repaired is a SERVICE.. thus taxable when it reenters the country.

Once in 1992, crossing detroit/windsor, i had an invoice drafted as for 2K of goods and 2K of services and thus i would only pay on 2K but the customs agent read me the tax act how without the 2K of services, i'd never have gotten the 2K of goods, thus i had to refill out all the paperwork and pay GST on 4K

Tako hit the nail on the head.  I called UPS and they asked me what the nature of the shippment was I said it was for repair, they said they were wrong to charge me for the total cost of the item they shouldhave charged me for the cost of the repair.  $750 to $1000, but they said if I want to refute the charges I shouldn't pay the current taxes, which would mean I wouldn't get my package and once they received the proper documentation, a commercial invoice from PFR with the tracking # on it and the charges, they would charge the GST/PST on the repair cost and not the cost of the item.  Which they said could take up to another week to fix, so I figured I've had a long enough wait, the most I would end up saving was $50 so I just wanted my playfield back at this point.

Now another option would have been to say the repair work was warranty repair.  If the work was warranty repair there would have been no GST/PST only brokerage.  But I don't think PFR would have gone along with it, basically I would have been asking them to forge documents and they have nothing to gain by lieing to customs to try and save me some money other then possibly getting in trouble themselves, so I didn't feel it was fair to even ask them to do that.  I could have forge the document myself but then all they would have to do is call PFR themselves and I would get charges the GST/PST and a fine.  So I bent over and took the charges and will make sure I use DHL next time around.

That restored playfield looks incredible!  It's an Addams Family - nuff said, definitely worth the extra pesos to get this game in pristine condition.  After all this game is sooooo much fun!  I guess you will be able to appreciate it even more in its restored state.  Enjoy!

I thought the service was only taxable if provided within Canada ...
...otherwise it's practically impossible to track.

I lived in the US for 6 months and had some work done on my car.
Under your suggestion, I should have had to pay GST for that when I came back home?
...it makes no sense to me !

Then again, I didn't read the 12,000 page GST tax manual either....

Cheers,
Steph

In Theroy yes you should have, but I doubt you were going to tell the boarder gaurd as you were crossing you had $1000 of work done on your car.

Not much choice when the item is being shipped, have to disclose all that info.

When an item is shipped to the US for repair, the value of that item increases.  It would be the same as if you had gotten a local company to repair it. They charge you the GST on the cost of repair.  Shipping it out of the country is no different.

Eg:  The playfield was worth, $1000.  He paid $750 US to have it fixed up.  That pf is now worth $1750 (not splitting hairs over exchange rates here).   When it comes back in, the GST /PST payable on that item is now based on $750.  Had it been a warranty repair, then it would have been duty free/ tax exempt.

However.  UPS has a tendancy to screw up on how they calculate out their charges, they like to charge based on the new value of the goods ($1750) and not just the repaired amount.  Drop me a scan of your invoice, and I would be more then happy to check it over.

As for the car, you were a resident of the US, not of Canada.  While you were out of the country, that will be deemed as personal effects, and will be exempt.  if you had just drove down for the weekend and had it done, well then you should have paid duty/tax on it.

(The 12,000 page GST tax manual is alot of fun to read!)

Well I just got finished adding molex connectors to every coil on the wiring loom for TAF.  Trying to make it easier to clean, this way I can just remove the coils, clean the wiring loom and then re-attach the coils, after I clean them as well.  But now I don't have to worry about de-soldering all of them and trying to remeber where the wires went for all 20 some odd coils, now I just had the label the connector so about 5 hours of work I'd say for this upgrade and well worth it for my sanity I think.

I also got around to getting some High Res shots of the finished payfield.  Before and After Shots can be found here:

Nice Playfield ... and I see it's just a big paintjob...  I mean I SEE THE PAINT JOB

I don't like the fact that they paint everything ...   I know its the only way to hide patches but still ...  Bill davis doesn't do it that much and it doesn't show.

Again, I wish I had the money and patience to send my playfields and have other jealous bastards b**** about it
