I'm very excited. Just ordered and paid for an RFM. It was through ebay and is being shipped from Rhode Island to Ogdensburg NY where I will pick it up and bring across the border. I'm super excited. I can't wait to tinker around with the pin2k platform. The one I ordered is supposedly working, which is awesome, but depending on the stuff to come out of nucore I may get one in the future. Turning my machine into a jukebox isn't much of a draw yet. Maybe if new game kits come out it'll be worth it.
This is also my first purchase from ebay, the US, and using shipping (always picked or got delivered from seller before). I'm a bit nervous, but excited as well.
I've read that the game is really heavy. Is it heavy even with the backbox removed? The guy agreed to ship it with the backbox removed, he said it was no problem. He is packing it on a pallet.
Also, I'd like to get the online tournament system working. Anyone got a spare SMC8416 ISA network card in their closet?

Yes, it is a heavy beast. I think w/ the head remove it would be pretty easy to use a dolly and bring it down your stairs. You are welcome to use my dolly if you like and I'll even come over to help if we can plan a convenient time. Just send me a PM.
Thanks for the offer Duane. Hippochrome and I have been getting good at moving pins in and out using moving straps. Just did HS last night without breaking a sweat. Getting the GNR in was probably the most challenging yet due to being a widebody.
But why is pin2k cabs heavier (minus the head) than other pins? Is it the computer in it? Couldn't it just be removed?

The lower cab with the head removed isn't as heavy as say a WPC, but the head on a P2K is so heavy because of the CRT in it. (not to mention it's physically got more wood to it than conventional heads)
The best part about P2K is working on them. Absolutely brilliant design.

Great, so it won't be a problem to bring it in then. We get normal sized pins in and out all the time
Bringing the head in separate may be a bit challenging though, due to its bulk.

Awesome game.... very different from any other PIN I have owned. I really enjoy it!
The machine is VERY HEAVY assembled, but if your moving it, take the head off, and the playfield out... then it's not bad at all.
The tourney option is a little bit silly. You have to register (and he will be charging $ for registration soon), and to link to the internet with your high score..... so basically, unless your a world caliber RFM player, you have just taken away any enjoyment of achieving your own high score. Plus the extra parts and the convcersion????
In addition, there is no way to control another play from taking off the glass and using thier finger to score CRAZY numbers.... again, great concept, but in reality a little silly.
When you take apart the machine and re-assemble it.. make sure:
- Connector cables are nice and tight, - BOTH fans in the CPU area are working, - the legs are on securely (with feet) - again very heavy.
Great buy. please report on teh shipping process... I have always been curious... and since you won't sell me your GNR, I too will have to go via the States.
I think it's a GREAT idea. Gives you something to strive for without having anyone over to compete against. Yes one could remove the glass and rack up a silly score but whats the fun in that? (and I think anyone that goes through the trouble of setting up their RFM for tourney play would play fair, as it's not just plug and play) From what I've seen of the tourney so far, all of the scores are legit and a number of them are local Toronto players.
As soon as I get my RFM, I will be installing all of the tourney gear I've managed to acquire over the past couple years in anticipation. As long as the tourney hosts fee is reasonable I don't have any problem donating, after all the host is out of pocket for everything so far...
You're probably right that it isn't worth the effort to go online, but I think it would be fun to even get it to work. I wouldn't spend more than a few bucks on it though. I already have a compatible router (running dd-wrt) already anyways, so I'm halfway there.

I think the most expensive part of the tourney system for you would be the barcode reader. I managed to get the card reader that they recommend, the router and the NIC for under $100 CDN but it took a lot of digging.
Not sure how difficult it'll be to find the NIC these days at a reasonable price.

I have a couple extras.
Thing is they are computer pulls and are untested. I plugged one of the three in my machine and it worked. I suspect the other two are probably the same.
Your going to need more ram as well.
I wish they would fix the code so you wouldn't require the router. They wrote it to only allow for one hop before the packet gets killed. Going over the internet requires several hops. The code was written thinking of two machines co-located. All the router does is modify the packet to last for several hops. Long way around a solution in this case.
Thanks necro, Steph offered to sell me one too. Not so hard to find afterall!

Well I think you might be the second guy then up and running on MAACA if you get it going.
Getting all the info you need to get it running right can be a bit of a challenge with Jim. All I can say is start with the latest software and work your way back. You need a router that has full iptables support. Even though DD-WRT will show iptables support on other models it isn't full support in some cases and the command you need isn't supported on the smaller rom flash size versions (compact). If you use the Linux version of router he states you'll be alright with his flash. Don't try and use his flash on any other router than that exact version, otherwise your on your own to figure out how to make your router work. Not bad but the main thing is make sure it has the full iptables support before starting. The other thing is for whatever reason he uses a Linux router protocol in his setup. Linksys does not default to this network config. I changed it all around to conform to my home network rather than going with his IP address setup. It just seemed more logical to me. Also watch where your getting your DNS from. "tracert" can be your friend when trying to sort it out.
Have fun! Had I had an explanation of why things needed to be configured a certain way at the onset I would have cut my time to 1/10th. Just being told do this and try this didn't make it so easy until I knew why I was doing it after figuring out why it didn't work.
Mine is still 1.1 - and I have tried everything... I even was lent an older laptop since mine kept saying "no connection to Com 1".
So I tried the old computer that runs on COM 1.... we first tried it in my friends RFM game, and it worked at his place.
so when I hooked it to my RFM - again, no connection to COM 1. I beleive the problem lies with my RFM machine? perhaps a bad serial wire (internal)? Has anyone come across this problem before?
I fortunately had mine updated in the first go. No problems (other than the laptop started to run out of power). It seemed rather simple if you are computer savy.
Now I just need to find some (extra) free time to install the network tournament.
Necro, I'll probably be needed to pick your brain if I decide to go for it. I do in fact have the WRT54GL router with the full dd-wrt (been using it for a couple years). I'm a bit rusty with iptables but I like to consider myself technically savvy, I am a linux developer afterall.
To do the online stuff, I need this v1.8 right? Where can I find it?

You need to get v1.8 from the guy hosting the tourney server.

It's free.
He gives you a link to download v1.8 down the road when you become a trusted agent.
You would think he was dealing in crack the way he protects this version. Problem is you need the thing from the onset to get it to work right. I have no idea why he would let you struggle with a lesser version to find out that it is the reason for things not functioning correctly. At least if I had known what wasn't supported in these versions I would have anticipated the problems rather than waiting to get the correct version after being indoctrinated in as a patched member.
V1.5 will get you close to full functionality. If you go without a reader make sure he puts your IP address in the server. I spent countless hours troubleshooting because he didn't do this when he said he did. Without the reader it's the only way his site knows that it's your game sending stats and logs them appropriately.
Also the card is given as black on blue. I used the exact reader and the other linked RFM I know of uses a handheld reader. We both could not get the printout in colour or grayscale to work. I had to clean up the artwork in Corel, increase the size of the barcode and replace the blue background to get it to read. The reader reads the default cards fine. He has since added a link to produce these factory cards but I had to hunt for them. You need to set parity etc. with these cards. If memory serves defaulting the reader is the correct settings for RFM.
I don't want to bother with the barcode reader, seems kinda unnecessary. I'm the only one in my house that plays these infernal machines.

I wish I knew "exactly" what the differences were. AFAIK it's the scrolling table and card support.
For you install I would suggest.
V1.5 or V1.8 Install NIC and extra RAM. Flash his flash since you have the exact router. Set up your RFM and the router settings to suit your network. Have him put in your IP address.
It is! Price is a bit high, but if it means I can buy a new game kit down the road, or my current system goes belly up, then it's good to have. I'm glad those guys made the system!
It's also tempting to get it just to tinker. Will they allow people to write their own native game code? Or does it need to be emulated to work?

Price seems fair if you got a gutted RFM or SWE1 for a good deal.
If your looking at hocking out the guts of a working game I agree without other game offerings it makes little sense to spend the money.
All in all what they are providing though if you add up the nuts and bolts and R&D seems quite fair, but lets face it we pay to play games not buy nuts and bolts.
Ya, it's totally fair. It's just not worth it yet for someone that has a working machine. I 'hope' the one I bought will be working. Please be working!!

I plan on going NuCore even if I have a working CPU. I'll just sell off all the bits I don't need to help re-coup the cost. The featureset and enhancements that NuCore brings to P2K will be worth the couple hundred I will be out of pocket after selling all the stuff I don't need. (and I won't have to worry about the crappy original computer packing it in and being stuck with a paperweight)
I may do it sometime down the road, but what's the rush? Isn't the biggest achievement with nucore the emulation software? I know there's a hardware bit, but it looks quite simple. Will these things run out fast?

Nah, can't see them pulling the basic kit anytime soon. For me the cost of NuCore is more than worth the benefits, and I want to support all of the work Chuck and Don did to bring it to market. As I mentioned before, I'd rather sell off the original parts I don't require after installing NuCore while they are still good and in demand vs. waiting for them to fail and not worth anything.

If there was a complete other game offering doubt I would break down an RFM to create it. In the end it would probably be best to be another dedicated game. Best case is to find cab and with no playfield and driver board for this purpose. Never witnessed one torn apart this far yet though so it would be a hunt to get that combination at the right price. It would be nice to have a complete dedicated Wizard Blocks, but again not at the price of losing RFM.
As for swapping pf's around to change games, it's not for me. Build a game and keep it running. Swapping stuff around just to play a different game does not interest me.
There was a SWE1 kit posted to Mr Pinball this morning for $900, pretty tempting. But a bit soon for me, I don't even have my RFM yet! It does interest me though, much easier to swap a playfield than a whole machine.

True, but the reality is that you'll likely not do that more than once, maybe twice... (...it's more work than you think....)
I have a NIB SW Ep.1 kit (...I actually have the box ! ) and only made the swap once.
SW was good, but RFM is more fun, ... so I've I have the SW back in the box for 2 years now... (...the kit probably only has about 50 plays on it !)
...and no, I'm not really planning on selling it (unless someone offers stupid money for it...), because I'm hoping to find a gutted Pin2K cab to put it in... (... I passed on one at a Starburst auction last year which sold for only $300... still kicking myself... )
How much did you pay for the kit? If you don't mind me asking. Did it come with a prism card?

Yea but with Nucore swapping becomes a snap, assuming you have the dual plunger, pull one PF out pop the new one in, turn the machine on, with that kind of simplicity I can't see why you wouldn't do it
No, that's "dumb" money... Stupid money is about 200x that
I agree. That would be stupid money for that.
AFAIK they come up for about half of that in USD NIB. Funny thing is a lot stay NIB so I don't think anyone else wants to go to the trouble to convert them either.

Flashing the old system is a piece of cake. Programming isn't really a sticking point which is the only additional ease Nucore would add to conversion.

Actually, NuCore eliminates the prism card too.
That was the real headache... ( taking the card out, "splitting-up the sandwich" , swapping 12 eproms, re-assembling the prism card. etc... )
If you install the dual-plunger, then yes, all you would then need to do is swap the PF to play with NuCore.

I think Necro's point was that since reprogramming a prism card is easy, nucore doesn't offer much for swapping games. But according to you, it isn't so easy actually. Interesting.

The sound and graphics roms are the concern I would assume with the sandwich.

You don't actually re-program the prism card; you physically swap out eproms. (12x)
Necro's comments was about re-flashing the bios chip on the mobo.
A full RFM to SW swap involves :
Swapping PFs (5 minutes) Replacing auto-launch button with plunger (5 minutes) Swapping prism card roms (15-20 mins [delicate procedure; easy to damage proms or card] ) Flashing Bios (which requires laptop PC and null modem cable) (10 mins) Replace Marquee (Optional) (5 mins)
So the whole process takes 30-40 minutes. With NuCore you eliminate the prism card and bios flashing which accounts for most of work.

Yeah, we got to see Chuck and Don (actually it was just Don by himself as Chuck was still speaking) do the RFM to SWeP1 swap live during their seminar last year at expo. With the plunger swap the game went from RFM to SWeP1 in under 10 mins. One of the coolest features is NuCore has PF sensing code built in, so it automatically runs the correct software based solely on which PF is installed in the game. No switches or soft menus to sift through, just swap the PF and you're up and running.
I've got it! Picked it up from "The Corporate Center". Only cost $20 for them to receive the pallet. The guy there even helped me unwrap it from the pallet and bring it down the stairs into the minivan, very nice people. They also had a small dog that wouldn't stop barking, and its bark sounded like a squeeze toy, very weird.
The machine looks nice, a 7 or 8 (whatever that means). Hopefully it works. Hippochrome's on his way to help me move it downstairs. I declared it at the border, showed my paypal receipt, paid my taxes and went on my way. Very painless.

It came with the head detached, so I hope I reconnected all the wires. Into the computer I attached the parallel and serial cables, and the monitor cable. Anything else I'm missing?

I think that's about it for cables... There should be a power cable for the monitor etc, but it sounds like you got that one already because the computer and monitor are coming up. (is the maquee light coming on?)
you might need to pop the CPU out and reseat the prism / double check all your connections. Lets hope it's something simple.
Just took a peak at the power driver board. For the row of fuses, the fouron the right most are lit red, then the fifth from the right is green, then the rest are dark. What does that mean?

You got the coin door open when you check these fuse LED's? If the coin door is open all the led's to the left of the Green +12V LED will be off. (but these will not be the cause of your non-booting CPU)
When you turn the game on, the CRT should be solid white and then go to black as the game starts to boot. If you're not getting ANY picture, check to see if the the "Health" LED (LED2) is blinking after a while, and make sure you've got +5V (LED17)
I've hooked the pin2k pc up to a monitor, but am still not seeing anything. The power supply is pretty noisy. But the CPU fan is spinning.
And the coin door has been closed when doing earlier testing.

So with shipping, customs, taxes, ect. what did transport cost? Which shipping company did you use?
Sounds great, let me know how it goes... I love my game... (PS: if you have been watching lately, RFM has generally gone up in price (+ $1000) from a few months ago...)
Shipping was $195 USD to Ogdensburg, and the package centre charged me $20. I then paid GST+PST on the purchase price.

I reseated the CPU and prism card, no luck. Will test the voltages next.
I contacted the seller and he's been trying to help me trouble shoot. He said the machine worked fine when he had it and the power supply wasn't noisy. He's been very good at responding to my emails and packed it up good, I think he's honest.

Tested the +5v and +12v voltages coming out of the pwoer supply. Used one of the unused connectors. They tested fine.
Does that leave the motherboard? Oye vey, maybe I should get that nucore after all.

I don't know what I did, but after leaving it on for 5 minutes or so I heard a 'bong' from the other room, ran over and it booted!!
It now boots right into the game.
It has a bunch of switch errors and burnt bulbs, but I can handle that and pin2k's great diagnostics will make fixing it a breeze
The game software is v1.1, do I need to upgrade? I'll just borrow a USB to serial adaptor and NULL modem cable from work.
The video image is also wobbly from time to time (not always). Also, in the RGB test, the top left of the monitor is showing the wrong colour, but this doesn't show during gameplay because that region's dark.
Thanks for the help guys!

As Steph mentioned, you'll want to upgrade the software asap as it's missing a bunch of stuff for sure.
Now that she's booted, does she boot up consistently even after being powered off for a while? Wonder if the electrolytics on your mobo have been changed yet? Reason I ask is these mobo's didn't escape the bad caps that were made about 10 years ago. Check all the electrolytics on the mobo for swelling / ballooned tops. If you notice any you'll need to replace them as these will cause you all kinds of grief. I've had to change out a bunch on a few different P2K mobo's so far.
Glad to hear she's at least got some sort of pulse!
I tried it on my friends and it worked fine, brought the laptop and Null cable hone... and no connection to COM1? Its like it never connected... so that leads me to beleive my internal std. serial cable is bad... or my prism card is defective?
My friend is coming over this week to see for himself and hopefully help me out... worst case, he has a plug in upgrade board that will upgrade my software without the need for a laptop... but I'd like to solve this problem nonetheless.... just in case new games are made for the Pinball 2000 format.
Hope you don't have this problem. Good luck.
PS: some of the tragets and switches are VERY hard to find... but they are out there. let me know if your having prblems locating parts, I may be able to lend advice (since I just went through all the research myself).
I was doing some switch diagnostics and the monitor went blank, now she won't boot again! Does this sound like a cap problem? Where do I get replacements?

It's hard to say. Did you check the mobo yet?
When the monitor went blank did you notice if anything else shut down? (fans / marquee light etc)
It does sound like it's an issue contained inside the cpu case though. Could be bad caps, bad processor, flakey power supply...
Well, one of the green caps looks like it's slight bulging, my guess is it's the problem. Where can replacements be found? Are they hard to replace?
When the game shutoff, the marquee and monitor stayed on.
Update: Just read Clay's guide on this issue, and it definitely sounds like my problem. I'll replace all 5 caps (will get my guy at work to do it, this looks challenging). Looks like GPE has 1000uF 6.3V capacitors in stock.

I bought a capacitor from a local electronics store to replace the bulging one on the motherboard. According to pinrepair.com it's a 1000uF 6.3V capacitor, but the store only had 1000uF 25V, will it work?

Yes, that will work.
You can go higher on the cap specs (ie. 25V vs. 6.3V) but not the reverse.
(The voltage is a maximum rating. ie, the cap will handle UP TO 25V .)
As long as the cap physically fits (..the 25V might be bigger than the 6.3V), you should be fine ...
Damn. I replaced the one transistor that was bulging, but no luck, still no booting.
I'll just wait for the right capacitors to arrive and get my guy at work to do the replacements properly. Hopefully that will do it. What other options have I got? nucore?

Ok, replaced all the caps on the mobo, but still no boot. I've only tested on the workbench though, haven't brought it home to test in the machine yet. I hooked it up to an AT power supply, AT keyboard (not easy to find these days!), and to an LCD monitor. Yes, the prism card is removed (it's at home).
Now what?

While it doesn't explain why your MB doesn't boot, how exactly are you hooking it up to a LCD monitor? Is your LCD capable of displaying CGA signals? If your LCD is just your generic retail LCD, it won't work.

I was told that if you remove the prism card, a standard VGA monitor will show the initial POST screen.

I don't know if that's true or not. It doesn't make sense to me that the PRISM card would alter the video signal to VGA compatible from CGA but I don't know enough about P2K to be positive about it.
Which path should I take? I guess 1 would be best, but there's probably a long turnaround time.
1) Does anyone know if mindstorm88 repairs pin2k motherboards? I emailed him, waiting for a response.
2) There's a guy on RGP offering a NOS motherboard for $269+$30 shipping. He said he'd take my broken one and offer me the NOS one for $220 with free shipping.
3) Buy nucore (complete, or build my own?) Then sell off my prism card and broken motherboard.

Price sounds fair for the motherboard. Not just any MediaGX board will work. You need that specific one with the 5520 chipset 200, 233 or 266 Mhz CPU and super I/O.
If you can verify the prism card is ok your probably better of in the long haul selling it and going Nucore IMHO. Here is the issue though with testing the other components. How many people are going to start plugging in cards into a good one of these mobo's to troubleshoot it? I'd be a bit concerned about trying that on my system to be honest.
A bit off topic but anyone have a good source for the CPU fan replacements? A little bit of preventative maintenance would be a good thing. I snagged one last year but I couldn't readily match it up recently.
I'm not too worried about my prism card. The game did briefly work when I first got it and it's clearly the motherboard/CPU that refuses to boot now (by testing prism-less with a VGA monitor). I just can't be certain if the problem is the motherboard or the CPU.
I've already been told by a fellow member that they were too nervous to let me try my CPU in their machine. So I guess I should buy a new CPU at the same time to be safe?

I would try and isolate the motherboard issue the way you are attempting to now by booting without the Prism on a std monitor. What do you have to lose now? The CPU can be readily found, they were used extensively in Compaq laptops.
Let's face it. Strip all the pinball related stuff and you have a single board computer to deal with. Seems like the simplified method to trouble shoot it to me.
So the CPU is less rare? The selling the mobo said he'd include a CPU for $20, I may as well just ask for that. Considering my mobo had bulging caps, it makes me think the mobo is the issue. I did replace the caps though. Unless... by running the mobo with the bad caps that first night, it fried the CPU. If you recall, I was able to start the system eventually, and used it for a couple hours until it all of a sudden shut off and wouldn't start again. Now that I fixed the mobo, maybe all I need is a good CPU. Argh, I'm so confused.
Could I stick the CPU into another socket 7 mobo to test it? Anyone got a space Cryix MediaGX CPU?

The odds of your cpu is very rare i would bet on the board myself. Cpu normally don't die unless of extreme heat.

If you hook a speaker to the mobo does it generate beep codes? Beep codes usually use the IBM legacy standard. Not going to tell you much if you get the One Long, One short but at least you know the problem lies in the board itself.
Beep Code: Description of Problem: No Beeps Short, No power, Bad CPU/MB, Loose Peripherals One Beep Everything is normal and Computer POSTed fine Two Beeps POST/CMOS Error One Long Beep, One Short Beep Motherboard Problem One Long Beep, Two Short Beeps Video Problem One Long Beep, Three Short Beeps Video Problem Three Long Beeps Keyboard Error Repeated Long Beeps Memory Error Continuous Hi-Lo Beeps CPU Overheating
I tried testing for beep codes by wiring some headphones to it, but no luck

I have 2 questions The ear phone jack is not the jack you want that's your sound card there not the same on the MB there should be a section to plug in a speaker it's a 4 pin connector but only use 2 wires. Also is the voltage to your MB 100% correct? Because some mb are a pain in the rear if the voltage is off just a little.

Yup, I had attached the headphones to the PC speaker pins on the mobo, not the sound card port. We did this all at work, and we're a bunch of computer geeks, so we tried all the tricks. There was apparently someone with a POST card that can spit out motherboard boot process to serial, but he's out of town
i've also tried booting with different power supplies, so I doubt that's the cause either.

To me sounds like a bad mb something is shorted out. I have seen those motherboards for sale localy before but that was 5 years ago and that company is bankrupt and gone. But you never know pc recyclers are the best place to look.

I've been looking into CPU fan replacements recently. Not easy to find Socket 7 sinks and fans anymore. Although it looks like a Socket 370 should work as it has the same physical size as a socket 7.
Just got word from a local laptop repair store that they could probably fix it. Free estimate/verification (i.e. they'll take a look and give you the price to fix it if possible) and you only pay if it gets fixed. Sounds like it's worth a shot, eh?

Yay! I got my replacement motherboard in the mail, courtesy of Borygard (of RGP). The system boots now!
Now I still have the same problem though with the switches. A few of the switches aren't working, and a couple are 'wrong'. The right ramp (enter and exit), the right orbit switches (both), the left outlane, and the two top rollover switches don't work, the right inlane reports as the right outlane, and the right outlane reports as the 'jet exit' switch.
This is all very puzzling, and I don't see any commonality on the switch matrix.
Update: I found a couple problems under the playfield. The right return lane and right outlane had their return wires reversed, for some reason. So now the right return works, but the right outlane still only activates the jet exit opto. I also found one four pin plug not plugged in. This fixed the right ramp (both switches) and the right orbit (top switch only). So now the right ramp works fine, but the right orbit doesn't register a hit, it just turns the GI in the pop bumpers on. I also discovered that the left outlane isn't working because the switch is dead, touching the two wires together activates correctly in test mode. But it also has the side effect of activating the right popper, hmmm.
So, what's left: Top rollover lanes still don't work. The left outlane activates the right popper and the right outlane activates the jet exit. And I discovered that the right pop bumper doesn't fire, but its switch works.

I hope you've got a manual / schematics for the game as you're gonna need them at this point. Some of the "wrong" switches could be a problem from the factory as I've had that problem before. (On my TOTAN I had the extra ball and one of the token inserts that were swapped from the factory)
Just use the manuals to confirm the wires are the correct colour and go from there.
Well, I'm fairly certain I just have a few bad switches. ME was kind of enough to sell me a few at her party tonight, can't wait to try them out, thanks!
