Upcoming For Sale: 1970 Gottlieb Crescendo pinball.
Apparently first Gottlieb with drop targets. Flower-power artwork. Quite nice backglass and playfield, but not perfect or mint, of course.
Currently going through electrical & mechanical to make it work 100%.
Cabinet paint will need to be redone, as was painted then partly stripped by some of the prior owners. Missing lockdown bar; backbox cover non-original.
Schematic diagram will be included.
First dibs to 'truckfarmingcanuck' but not sure he will still be interested due to timing, as I was unable to start this project until now - been quite busy lately.
Price and pics will be posted later (price will be below the $475 2010 Mr.Pinball of course). Will offer a two-tiered price: - non-shopped but 100% working; - 100% shopped with new leg levellers, new rubber rings, bulbs where required, lock/key, new pinball, PF cleaned/waxed, plastics cleaned, and new flipper coil sleeves.
As usual, will be able to deliver locally for a small additional fee when machine ready.
Thanks. - Sylvain.

Minstrel Man, 1951. (no, I didn't already know that - I had to look it up) Daniel
The 3 drop targets on Minstrel Man would never get hit directly with the ball, you hit a staionary target and it would drop behind it. I know this from fixing one for a friend, and also because Wild West had a similar single drop target smack in the middle if I remember correctly. I would have said that Wild West was the first machine with one drop target, (I will stand corrected if someone can tell me otherwise). There was a Wild West in a woodrail purchase I did in the late 80's and I remember the drop target being thin, redish and made from that white swirled marble looking plastic that was used at that time. I ended up selling it to Steve Young and John Fetterman along with a 1951 Niagara (both unshopped) that was in the same 32 woodrail lot I bought with a collector friend called Ron Gratton from Roxboro.
Does any one in Montreal remember him, it would be a blast to know what he is up to.
Est-ce que il y a quel q'un a Montreal (ou environs) qui ce rappel de Ronald Gratton de Roxboro ?

That pin is jokes ! No stereotyping there !!! I can see the slogan now....."Hit the man with the blackface and make him fall down..."
Those drop targets are obviously a different style. What was the first pin to use the same kind as found in Crescendo ? ( which is a great deal and somebody should definitely buy it when Sylvain is finished with it, by the way ).

Yeah it is screwy, I don't know which was the first machine with a single drop target as we know them today, only that I remember that the 1951 Wild West was the first example of a machie with a single "drop target" I ever owned, even though that one could argue that it was a sort of drop type gadget, and not a drop target at all since the ball never hit it physically, but it sure looked like you did "make" the target drop.

The research I did said that the 2 Gottliebs to first use drop targets were Wild West and Minstrel Man. I went with Minstrel Man because it came out in Feb '51, and Wild West came out in the fall of '51. I didn't actually look to consider how the drops worked, I just went with the dates. I'll bet you're right, then, Robert, that it was Wild West.

What I find odd is that Minstrel Man used three of these gadgets, and came out before Wild West, (as you mentioned) which only has one. I would have thought the reverse would have happened if the time line of production and design followed the same order as the release dates. There is really no way to know for sure.
I also assumed that first they would have tried one "drop target", and then at a later date they would of said something like, "Hey Harry, why don't we put a few of these on the next game layout instead of just one." Again, who knows. It's just fun to speculate.

Sorry Sylvain, we did sort of hi-jack your thread with a historical quiz and discussion.
Beautiful game, colourful and seriously "flower powerish", especially down to the detail of writing down the usually conservative - "Mfd. by D.Gottlieb & Co." etc on the BG in a different font than usual. Quite the break from convention for Gottlieb, - they also knew, and acknowledged that the times had changed.

Repairs almost done. Machine working now. New AC plug, has proper fuses, relay contacts tightened, adjusted & flexstoned, score motor lubed, few broken-off wires resoldered, missing screws added, etc.
More pics added below, including of the cabinet. As indicated earlier, the cab is solid, but needs a repaint to make it nice and as original, due to the earlier repaint and part stripping by some of the prior owners. The backglass is nice, but has some paint pinholes and small scratches.
Prices: - As-is working, $275 firm. - Add $100 for full shopping incl parts if wanted, as per above post.
