It's perfectly acceptable to cancel an auction before any bids are made, and also acceptable to cancel an auction and sell an item privately and therefore close an auction before it completes (whether there are bidders or not).

What you're not supposed to do is advertise and accept a private offer from someone responding to the listing to buy "off eBay" - but that only applies where the offer is included in the listing and, potentially, if you are using eBay's email communication system to make arrangements to buy "off eBay".

You are also discouraged from changing or cancelling items within the last 12 hours in order not to piss off your potential buyers (though it is possible).

You can also choose to cancel your auction early and sell to the highest bidder at the time.

Man it's hard to make a joke around this place.  Did you notice the ??

I've been buying and selling on eBay for 5 years, I know all about selling items outside eBay even if they are listed for auction.

I would have cancel it for him would rather have it local.
But by the time i saw message was to late because at I was past the 12hour mark.
That makes it next to impossible to remove you can but really have to have a good reason and contact ebay to do so.

Like what? I have bid on items and in the end it has ended with "Item no longer available"

I was under the understanding that sellers had the option to list thier items elsewhere like classifieds and could end the auction if it sold otherwise. Are you saying putting up an item for auction gives Ebay exclusivity on that item? From my experience as a buyer I haven't witnessed it working that way. If you were high bidder before the auction was ended, are you saying you have a leg to stand on to go after the buyer?

I have seen auctions ended this way just minutes from the end. In many cases I assumed there was no recourse and this was just the buyer pulling it because they had no stated reserve but did not meet their hidden expectations.
