... I thought it would be better to continue the clubhouse discussion here instead of in Jim's sale thread...
Sure... it would be nice to buy a clubhouse... thing is will anyone want to pitch in? I have seen some decent commercial buildings in my area for 120000$ (they were about 40x30... I know, not very big...). Are 60 members ready to pitch in 2000$ each, and membership fees pay for the taxes and utilities? And the way it can be done is that ownership shares can be sold.
Problem is getting people to do it... It's why I pray for the lottery...
you never know! i always thought of opening a retro arcade, but kids don't care about games like that anymore, so it would be best for people like us, collectors or older people who remember the games from their childhood,
it's too bad we are all spread out all over the place,
you never know, it might happen

Well, my place is 45 minutes from downtown Montreal and 1h20 minutes from downtown Ottawa. I think I am the most centralized of the members, calculating that a lot of members are either in Ottawa or Montreal. Would suck for the TO and Calgary chapter... as for the western Ontario chapter, there is already a clubhouse... Adam's basement!

I would pay $2000 ...but in exchange for some storage space ... I think that's the key !
I was paying $100/mo for a 5x8 storage locker. I would pay double that for an equivalent space in a MAACA-owned "club house"
The problem with that concept is that if 60 members want a 5x8 space, you need a 2400 sq/ft of storage space ( 40 x 60 ) plus "living space", so you're looking at at least 3000+ sq/ft. That ain't cheap !
(...although that furniture store you mentioned earlier this year with 20,000 sq/ft for $300,000 would have been perfect !
Whats that Shap pain in my back Oh it's a Knife Complete MAACA-Wacko!

Honestly If i could I would but not option for me. love the ideas But I do have a sujestion personally best solution is a half way point between mo ottawa something like that. Example houses and properties lets say near fournier areas like there's old school that was there was for sale at 90k with 10 acres and negotiable but this was a year ago. Same for a church and i think was less then that. My friend purchased his house there for 60k and has 5acres of property. Ok so it is the boonies but also a halfway point to mo or ottawa takes same time both ways to go there just a thought and get more for your buck. But you get a school that has lots of room could be good for storage and meetings and expos or something what ever we want to do.
Life is like Pinball!! You never know where you will bounce or where your going but sometimes you have that one amazing shot But on the other hand you have those darn gutter ball where you just get frustrated.
I'd be interested. The value to me wouldn't be so much storage, but maybe a place where I can bring a pin & work on it - and get advice from others with more experience; and watch others work on their pins. And maybe access to a set of tools that are pooled amongst users; or made available occasionally. A neat meeting place to exchange parts, etc.
Devil's in the details and the committment - and then getting along with each other.
Arcade would be cool. Not sure of "retro" though. How about "metro" - high-priced coffee & burgers. The Works here in Ottawa seels $15 burgers - add some good coffee & pins!
He has done what you are all suggesting and as far as I know is succeeding thus far. He has a where house in the west end of Toronto that he opens up once a week for pinball get together. You may want to get his perspective on you idea and what he has done to be successful. I'm going to be going to his place this weekend, I'll ask if he wouldn't mind stopping in here.
The other side of the coin which I'm not sure why you arn't considering is why don't you just start a league? TOPL has been around for a little over 10 years now I think, mabye more, we don't have huge atendance but you don't need it anything over 3 people is really just gravy, obvioulsy the more there are the more fun it is, and there seems to be an abundance of collectors in the area where you could hold the events on a weekly basics. So just forgo trying to invest in a central location and take advantage of the stuff you already have.
I might even be interested in the Warehouse thing depending how it works out, It would be cool to have some storage space! And a place to leave a game until shipping could be arranged! Also, It would be cool to say I own part of an arcade out East! I am not sure if it would be possible with Insurance. licensing etc. and all the other factors. I think the best bet would be Jvegas owned amp operated by MAACA people. Psssst, hey Jim, Let's talk!!

There have been at least one or maybe a couple of the Montreal MAACA folks that have been to Mike Hanley's place (for his monthly tournaments Feb07 or Mar07 I think).
Mike does a number of things with his location (Birthday parties, Boy Scouts, school groups, work groups and such) as well as a drop in night
Centigrade 37 ... LOTR in da House ... a Barracora ....... Spidey ... RFM
He used to host, I'm not sure if he still is or not, pinball nights every friday for $10 a person, you can just show up, play the games, help with repairs if you like, learn some new stuff and talk about pinball. He mostly has older type EM games so I never went as those games are more a source of frustration for me rather then fun, but he also holds Monthly Tournaments which I do attened when I can and he also hosts league night for TOPL. He is also hosting the TOPL playoffs this Sunday and his monthly Tournament is on the Saturday.
But litteraly the place is a wherehouse tha he has built out with nothing but pinball in it, he does have 1 or 2 drivers I can't remember, but he has about 50 machines playable and a ton of other ones stored up in the rafters. I plan to take my camera with me on Sunday so I'll take some pics for everyone.
