With many thanks to Gory, and after 20 odd eyars of waiting for one, I finally got a Fruit Machine (a UK slot machine, MayGay Monopoly [Green], 1992). In the process I discovered a very similar to MAACA forum in the UK for fruity addicts and emulators: http://www.fruit-emu.com/forums/
It had issues (resetting power supply and reel errors - the reels weren't synchronizing)...
... well after a long process of trial and error troubleshooting, thinking connector problems, I discovered upon closer inspection that the built in (soldered on) NI-CAD backup battery had leaked. It etched some of the traces (fine, fine small ones) causing the intermittent problems. I cleaned up the board and soldered in fine copper threads to repair the traces. Put in a new Varta MemPac I got at our electronic surplus (sayal.com) and...
...voila she's almost good as new. A couple bulbs to replace, a shop cleaning, a bit of cabinet paint touchup, and a new button cover to replace a cracked one to go, fix the token mech, add some 20p tokens and she'll sparkle.
I'm not completely out of the woods, I have a feeling that acid needs to neutralized and washed again.
But it goes to show you that a little pin repair knowledge can go a long way! Yeah! And here I thought maybe I had bought a large paper weight.
Now I have a question. Someone added a step up transformer to get the voltage to go from 120v to 220v to power the power supply. However they also added a second 120v power supply to bypass the +5volts for the MPU (motherboard). THe original power supply puts out a steady 5v?? Any ideas why? Would a step up transformer cause other problems like introducing AC ripple or something like that ? Any idea how to test for that without an oscilliscope?
Many thanks!! Now I have to go out and get Fish & Chips with malt vinegar to celebrate tonight.
Thanks Gory, you have no idea how happy you made me, both for the machine, and for the challenge.
glad your happy. also glad you found out what the problem was with it. didn't notice the leak before. so it could have just happened from being in storage for 7months. it came from amusments911. so the extra power and such might have been from denise. have fun
also make sure to post the book up on those sites you visited to look for the info. since you have it now, you should share. make others just as happy as you are.

Hi , I was amusement911 technician at that time , and did these changes, if i remember well , the 5 Vdc power supply was added cause the original one was giving a bit too low voltage to the motherboard, causing intermittent reset !!!! but i maybe wrong, it was so long ago !!!!

then i must have meet you back in the day. i use to travel alittle bit to go to amusement911. did meet a couple guys who were techs there the first time in the old wearhouse. erin (wife) back the van side into a poll. but that was fine. we had sami and other 70's machines stack on the roof and inside the van.

I find that funny... Denis at Amusement911 had a hard time selling these off. I remember that they were at his place for some time, and I believe some guy in Australia picked up all his stock after a long while...
yep. he couldn't get rid of them. i always kept in contact with him about getting one or two. after the lot went to austraila he kept a couple for me. when i went to pick them up only one was working. so thats all i took. really wish i bought the lot he offered me at the time. but was on the pinball kick heavy then. so wanted only a couple.

this is fantastic, always great to get the background, and I could use more help.
I spoke too soon. It worked all day today, but then, my mother-in-law was playign it and poof back to trouble this evening. Even with the MPU fixes I have gone back to intermittent reel errors. The +12v test led takes time to lite and resets the machine, I tested the 12+ (unregulated) volts from the UK power supply and it's only putting out 10+ volts so that may explain the reel errors (or it's more pcb trace problems). 12v- is good. I am goign to try switching the 12v+ to the newer power supply and see if that helps.
Any ideas what may be wrong with the original power supply? Could re-capping it get it back up to scratch again? I don't have a lot of experience at that level yet.
Many thanks all! It still was nice having it up and running excellent for most of the day.

That's a shame, were they all the same title? If you know wher eto look, particularly in ON and BC there are lots of UK expats who would love these things for their rec rooms.
yes. they were all monopoly. think he had 30+ of them. had them piled up alittle. that and he also had one of the biggest collection i have ever seen of old shooting games.

If you like UK Fruity Machines, then you'd really like Japanese Pachislos, they take the "interactive" slot machien to a whole new level. ALthough I love Fruit machines (probably because i had a big win once when I was a kid visiting Wales), nothing beats the older 80's and 90's US slots (IMHO).

Still need help on this. So I switched the 12v+ supply from the UK power supply to the installed US one (that had a pretty steady 12v), but it didn't work, the fruit machine, although it gave me the 12v+ thumbs up led, reported a missing 12v unregulated voltage (boo hoo). I put it back and am goign to look for more faulty traces on the Motehrboard, and maybe re-build the UK power supply. Any ideas here?

There are good and bad, you have to do your research to get the good ones. I have one where the reels will occasionally roll backwards, in different directions, etc. My guests thinks it's a hoot, another plays these amazingly clear videos on a screen that covers the entire face of the slot (including the reels.) Kinda cheesey, well yah, but amazing, yes also. In any case I have NA slots, JAP slots and now UK slots. UK is entertaining, and right now a challenge, but ultimately I like the "regular" pace of 80's slots the best. Ticket paying machines suck.
