I mean the game is decent, but do you have some kind of hard on for Axl Rose or something, or do you really like the band, I just can't wrap my head around your absolutely insane need to own this game
I think this may be my last pinball machine (don't really want any other). I've looked around, and calculating the hassel and speed at which I want it, and the amount of cash that I have to spend on one, I think $4,600 is reasonable to me.
Albiet a VERY inflated price, but a price I am willing to pay for a good machine nonethless.

No "I'm a huge GnR fan, I love the band so this game is a must have for me"
or
"If I were a female I'd have Axl's Baby!! But this is as close as I'll ever get."
Those would make more sense
But if anything you should know there is never a Last game ever in collecting, you may not ever sell GnR but something will give you you'll either end up with another machine or something will leave
But still I'm curious what is it about the game that has you in such a tizzy, I mean based on your explanation it could be any title your offering crazy money for.

I just can't believe the GNR owners on MAACA aren't jumping all over this. We're talking almost the NIB price for a Stern title (albeit they aren't everyone's cup of tea).

Ya, but I would never trade my GNR for a POS like TDK.
Frankly, I don't think I'll ever find another GNR as nice as the one I own, and it's definitely my favourite game. I know it's irrational for me to not sell it at $4600 considering that I probably wouldn't have paid more than $4k for one when I was interested in buying one. On the other hand, being a widebody, it wasn't easy getting it into my basement, and getting it out will be even tougher. I don't want to sell it just to make a few hundred bucks profit if it means more work to try to find one, and then haul it down my stairs again. I'm not in this hobby to earn money, I'm in it to have fun. And right now, GNR is the most fun pin in my eyes.
Maybe I'm crazy too, but I feel for TGlover. I happened to luck out in being able to buy a GNR when I did (and in such good shape too). I also have a lineup of people wanting to buy it from me, and I'm sure they'd all be willing to spend more than $4k, so I don't feel like I need to sell it right now.
Pretty much the only way to get me to give up my GNR, at the moment, would be to offer a MM in trade.

Yea but $4600 is almost a LE LOTR I'd take LOTR over a GnR any day of the week and twice on Sundays. It's also a TSPP or POTC or Shrek/FG NIB and those are way better games IMO.
Also none of us here generally are out to make money, but the way I look at it, with a little patience and maybe some travel GnR can be found for in and around the 3K mark, give or take based on condition. If I had one and could get $4600 I'd have no problem taking the $4600 sitting on it and if I really wanted another GnR waiting around to find another one and then also having enough cash left over for another machine so a BK200 or a Centaur, of a Fish Tales or Demoman or T2. So it would basically be just my way of expanding the collection.

Doubt it will happen but the game is unique enough I wouldn't rule it out entirely. Game was made with assistance of the band when the band was at the height of thier career. Even if Stern were to make a band based pin it would probably end up being something like they did with Elvis and they would have missed the X factor of it coming out at the time of the band being hot.

He's not alone...................... One of the weakest moments I think I ever had was selling G and R ( Jonny now has it). Even harder to stomach at this stage is that I paid only $1600 CDN for it and had to drive barely over 1KM to pick it up!.I can understand where Tglover is coming from as it really is likely the #1 machine on my list too. Finding one in the shape of the one I had would be pretty much impossible ( I have tried hard).
Rebuilding...currently Scared Stiff, Guns N'Roses, Bally Harley Davidson, Fish tales, Slugfest, JVL Conquest standup, and a Wurlitzer Juke.
And now that I haven't sold it at TGlover's asking price, I'll never sell it! How could I bring myself to sell it for anything less than $4600 now?

If it's in the basement with the rest of your games it's just in the way
But if I had my TV/computer in a different room than my pins, then I wouldn't be able to look over at them during commercials or loading screens. I also would be less tempted to play them while doing work on my computer, and that's no good

Perhaps I'll just switch to a IJ (Williams). that was my 2nd fav. But I wouldn't covit it like a GNR - so it would probably be sold at some point (probably within the month with my track record.)
OK: To end this debate.
My games room in nearly complete... all the machines I wanted, plus a few to fill in the holes. I don't have any more room and I won't sell what I have. I have room for 1 maybe two more PINS. I have wanted a GNR since playing Ballyboy's and Visual pinball. I think it's a cool game, with great sounds, and great art. That's it.
I guess I'm impatient and have too much money.... other then that I can't explain why I want one... just that I do and I have the money to get one... (or at least I thought I had enough money).
I'll give you credit for never being seen in a tin foil hat.
I thought the spots on the back of my head were enough

Turn your PC into a MAME and run it through your TV at least then you'll be using the space effectively

I have one from treasure cove that I bought in 07, I really like the game and believe I'd have a hard time replacing it. Don't think I'd ever find another in the same condition.
There WILL be a day you'll regret not jumping on this craziness.
You are so right, Phil. Medvet offered the game to me before Johnny. It's ok, but I don't even think it is a $2K game let alone a $4,600 game. But props to TGlover for backing his wanted ad with real cash. Quite often folks say they want a game and aren't even willing to pay market price. Nice to see someone who is serious about their wanted post.

because of this "craziness" I think nobody will wan't to sell for anything less.....
I hit up two other Gn'R owners tonight that aren't on the forum. For $4600 they wouldn't even budge due to it's rarity and all the BS they went through to get them. They built 3000 of them and yet anyone that has one pretty much holds onto it.
Somebody at some point will sell him a GnR at that price.
My only peeve about it is that it is due to such actions that the book value for a pin gets inflated.
That part (raising value) ticks me off too (as I like GNR as well) - same thing has happened to ST:TNG. For years it gets no love. After a decade of lusting after it from afar while I stoke my addiction, I finally go way above my limit and get one. I keep it stored because I have no room for it and its so freaking heavy I can't put it in the basement (because I'd have to remove it to finish the reno). Along comes a recession and I cave and sell it (instead of 8 other lesser beings) because I need the cash quick. I think I'll regret that forever because unless I win a lottery I'll likely have to pay through the nose now to get another one as good.
I like GNR after playing it at Bally Boy's, it falls into that "if you like heart pacing rythms and ramps" type pinballs that I dig. I figure if one ever comes along, hey, I'd buy it. But wham, a couple guys go gaga over it and NOW I'm never going to be able to afford one. Thanks MR. Glover. (I'm just kidding of course.)
I would caution TGlover though that yes, one can lust after something pretty hard and offer a lot, but the victory may not be as sweet as it would be to eventually finding one the hard way at a decent price. You'll be hard pressed to sell your GNR at a loss if you pay that much. BUT if you're going to do this, why not go all out and find one in the US and send it to Treasure Cove or one of those types of restorers and at least get back something minty. My 2 cents.

This is an interesting point. I know a few times people have used MAACA as a reference for their asking price, even when I thought the price wasn't in line with the current market. I guess people figure... If Mr. Smith sold it for X, then mine is worth X. Same thing could be said for Ebay, especially when people are selling their family pinball that is broken, dirty and unshopped.

This is an observation only, not a complaint.
When you think about it, participation on MAACA itself is a double edged sword (two headed beasty). On the one hand it's an "enabler" it gives people access to resoruces, knowledge and opportunities that they may not have otherwise, but at the same time we are also creating our own inflation and competition for the very same machines that we covet.
The other side of this coin (I'm all about metaphors this morning) is that although pinball is dying, interest groups like ours attract more people to the hobby and thereby increase the competition and the prices for the very machines that we want. Operators I know to the North West of me are getting pissed off about all the cold calls, and in some cases ruining my own chances at acquiring some of that aging but valued inventory as the operators (who otherwise don't check Mr. Pinball Guide) realize the potential value of their dead inventory.
It works against us in other ways too. For example, I have an inventory of plastics and other items acquired over the years in bulk and otherwise with the intention of starting an online store but I feel oddly conflicted selling them to my collector friends because I know I can likely sell them for a lot more outside the circle (same goes for machines - I generally only sell machines on MAACA when I want fast cash and am willing to sell them at par or below what I paid). And it works for us, collective buying power has enabled me to get a good price on pinball glass which I pass on to MAACAnites in return.

And I would guess .. for all us "hot heads" that jabber on about our machines and bug poor Mr. Glovern when we're bored, there are at least 10 lurkers on here who don't participate except to lay in wait for "the right deal on the right machine" or to take advantage of the valuable information without really participating. Those may include the occasional seller looking to quietly value a machine they are preparing to sell.
Buy it now and everything, after shipping and taxes you should be able to get it for $4600.
Can I get a finder fee
I almost bought this one myself BUT no topper ( another $200USD +to get) and significant wear in Axl's cheek between the flippers and obviously a fair bit of touch ups and some gouged wood on the backbox.. ...$3400 USD from California, with shipping/taxes/brokerage you're around $4600 CDN easy for whats not a real nice machine.
Rebuilding...currently Scared Stiff, Guns N'Roses, Bally Harley Davidson, Fish tales, Slugfest, JVL Conquest standup, and a Wurlitzer Juke.
The Gn'R topper plain blows. I as a collector can understand why people may want it to be "complete". Hell I spent way too much for an eagle for my JD when I had it because the eagle was very cool, but this topper plain sucks. It looks like a bleeding ameoba.
I'd pay $40 for one just to throw it inside the coin door for completeness but honestly I can't say I would ever want to put it on the machine. It cheapens the appearance.
I think it looks cool, but then again I can't even fit it on my machine due to my basement ceiling being too low. No, it's not for sale.

People are actually cold-calling operators to see if they have machines for sale? I'd say it's pretty obvious the only people who do that are the ones with intentions of reselling.. and those people would only have themselves to blame for raising the flag to operators.

Does it count as cold calling if I bumped into workingpins at Uncle Buck's and inquired if he had any machines for sale?

Quoted Text
Cold calling is the process of approaching prospective customers or clients, typically via telephone, who were not expecting such an interaction. The word "cold" is used because the person receiving the call is not expecting a call or has not specifically asked to be contacted by a sales person.

The odd collector has always tried to strike it up with an operator or two. It's just that there are more collectors now, as a hobby pinball collecting has grown. So there is very little unexplored territory. And whereas an operator might get into a relationship with a collector for reselling; retiring operators often consider their machines paid for, and I suspect are web savvy and realizing that there is enough interest on kijiji, ebay and elsewhere that they can go direct to public for a larger sale on individual machines (just as I do occasionally) as opposed to a bulk sale or an auction. That being said I know two Ontario operators who don't want to give up gems in their pinball/arcade inventory, even though they're sitting in a workshop for years. And yet their are members here who seem to have the knack/relationship/bucks or whatever it takes to wedge them free on occasion.
It's not as it was just a few years ago. Pretty much everything is going through other collectors. Ops that have anything are asking what it's worth unshopped in many cases making it less favorable to deal with them than the collectors that at least give the game a once over for that price. Cold calling is just going to reap those less favorable deals. Ops are well aware this stuff isn't consider junk anymore.
Ad to that the fake ads for items for sale and the bidding wars for anything that starts out cheap from non-collectors and your pretty much 95% of the time buying from another collector for the going rate.
Any attempts I have seen for people putting ads out looking to buy machines on non-pinball forums end up looking like a despirate attempt to grasp at straws. It's like trying to fish for bass in your toilet.
If your going to get a "deal" it is ultimately going to be on the basis of what you can do with your own talents to restore a game. Then it comes down to you devaluating your time to working for the enjoyment of fixing the game and little else.
I would say I am more inclined to trade than to sell at this juncture given the environment to retain a stake in something.

With appologies to TGlover and hijacking the thread, whom I hope finds a nice GNR soon so he can salve his pain....
Glen, you've hit the nail on the head. Unless I want to loose money (as in "I need cash quick") I've found its always "better" to trade within the collector community than to sell outright as then everyone usually keeps their intrinsic value and pride intact and usually considers that they got the better end of the bargain, for whatever reasons, if not equal.
The most interesting thing going on is that the "deals" on A or B list are far and few between in Canada and getting slim in the US too. And even if you sell an A or B list game that you got at a good price for a profit, you'll find it hard to recover that "deal" if you want to replace the game again. Either because the value has gone up, inflation, OR you're wanting a better quality sample.
