Anybody heard of this ?

http://groups.google.ca/group/.....2a?#1f5ccaf3703a0b2a

(ie. Lead solder being phased out ).

I know there is a big push to eliminate all Lead from all electronics ( RoHS),
so it would make sense the lead solder also be targetted...

Time to stock up ?

Steph

It would depend on how much soldering you do.

I have one of these: (SEE IMAGE)

and I can't see me going through the whole thing in my lifetime.

So it would depend on your habbits I guess.

Lead free solder has been mandatory for years for potable plumbing.  I don't recall a major price difference.  It's likely just a few wholesalers capitalizing on the situation.  The only real downside, is that the lead-free solder is somewhat more difficult to work with and does require more heat to properly flow.

I've been using both for years, and I've found no real issues with using the lead-free stuff.  As long as you've got the right equipment, and decent soldering experiance there should be no issues.  (I'm currently using a lead-free 'no-clean' solder on my PCB repairs these days)
