Hello,

My DMD (STTNG)is defective and it's getting worst. It has a clouding problem and waves. It look like some Zener are burned and capacitor 150uf160v needs to be changed as well. I went to Maddison and could nt find any parts needed to repair it. Anyway one have them or a secret place where I could purchase all of it ?

Thanks

I don't think you'll be able to fix the the clouding problem without replacing the whole DMD.  The waves are most likely bad capacitors in the HV section of the DMD driver PCB.

oh wow and cheap shipping!!

I need to replace C4 and C7 witch are 150uf160v axial....unfortunatly they dont have it. What would be the closest match

Capacitor, Radial, 220uF, 160V. (but this is a radial...)

Capacitor, Axial, 100uF, 160V. I could put 2 of them in parallele....?

Can i use somehting with higher voltage ? Capacitor, Axial, 150uF, 350V.

Farads need to remain the same, voltage can be higher than original value.

The biggest problem with going with higher voltage caps usually is they just don't fit the real estate left for you on the board.

The key to working on the HV section is replace EVERYTHING that is in the kit. The other components often get stressed by failure of one.

Rebuild the DMD HV section or use a bypass board, see what you have for display and if that doesn't fix it replace the display as well.

OR

Sell me your STTNG at a good price and let me deal with the problem. Just kidding.

The only problem with teh HV kit that Ed sells is that it doesn't include the two axial electrolytics...   And it's these two parts that are definately causing the "wave" in the display.

So the closest match is Capacitor, Axial, 150uF, 350V.? will fix the wave then ?

Its possible yes.  But if the root of your problem is that your display is going bad, then the components will fail again eventually.  You might at some point have to reinvest in a new display as well.

As it was said before, substitute only higher voltage when replacing capactiors but not the uF value (not too higher a voltage since the size might not fit in the PCB layout).  But in some cases, like when rectifying AC--DC, the uF value can be changed without affecting the circuitry much.

Alas, you might need to order from mouser.com or something since it is hard to find 150uF160V caps.  Are you sure this is bad (did you test it with an ESR meter or something or was it burnt/melted)?

Good luck.
