He was practicing to do a low level, slow speed fly by. In order to do so he has to bring up the nose and push the engines to stay airborne. It is quite spectacular but as you can see if something goes wrong not a lot of room and time to maneuver!

How the heck you have the time and presence of mind to make sure the jet crashes clear of the stands and eject at such a low altitude/imminent crash is beyond me, but it must take a lot of training, practice and nerves of Titanium.
A full investingation will provide the reason but the apparent maneuvre he was flying was a standard airshow routine.
I hate to speculate but it looks like a high alpha pass where your angle of attack is very high thus the wing provides reduced lift and thrust from the engines basically keeps you aloft. Loss of thrust (due to an engine malfunction, possible bird ingestion) to one of the engines puts you into a situation at low altitude where you cannot recover the aircraft. The asymetrical thrust aspects of a twin engine aircraft under high power settings would generate significant yaw and turn the aircraft.
Again pure speculation armchair quaterbacking derived from a 10 second video from a guy who hasn't flown a jet in over a decade. I would wait for the investigators to provide the actual facts of the accident.

Likely an engine or control surface failure. Damn lucky he ejected with about a half second to spare. Could have ended up landing in the middle of the inferno too. No doubt the pilot hit the ground pretty hard.
Thought I read somewhere that the govt was ordering some new jets.

I will look it up but I seem to recall the lightening as being the export model related to the YF22 without all the classified equipment. Then again my memory sometimes sucks.
Just checked- Harrier like STOL capability, ground attack/support, half the cost of the f22, stealth ability. Everything but air superiority for close range combat compared to the f22.
